Chapter 9: The Lie That Destroyed Them All
For several seconds, nobody breathed.
Victoria’s words remained hanging in the room.
“She is your sister.””
Nathan stared at her.
Then he laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
“No.””
Victoria’s expression didn’t change.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
Nathan looked at Elizabeth.
His mother looked devastated.
That scared him more than Victoria’s accusation.
Because Elizabeth wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t shocked.
She looked like someone who had spent years carrying a terrible weight.
“Mom.””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Nathan…”
“Tell me she’s lying.””
The silence was unbearable.
Nathan looked at Grace.
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
Lily stood between them, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly.
She didn’t understand.
She only knew the adults around her suddenly looked afraid.
“Mommy?””
Grace immediately knelt.
“I’m here, sweetheart.””
Lily looked toward Nathan.
“Daddy?””
That word broke through everything.
Nathan turned away.
Because for the first time since meeting her, he didn’t know what to say.
Victoria stepped forward.
“You deserve the truth.””
Nathan looked at her.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Her face tightened.
“I know you hate me.””
“Hate?””
Nathan’s voice rose.
“You attacked the mother of my child.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You tried to erase Lily.””
“I was trying to stop something worse.””
Nathan stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Victoria looked at Elizabeth.
“She knows.””
Everyone turned.
Elizabeth looked down.
Nathan felt his chest tighten.
“Mom.””
Elizabeth took a slow breath.
Then she spoke.
“When I found out Grace was pregnant…”
Grace looked at her.
“You knew?””
Elizabeth nodded.
“Yes.””
Nathan looked between them.
“Everyone knew.””
His voice became broken.
“Everyone except me.””
Elizabeth stepped closer.
“I didn’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me the part you know.””
She looked at Lily.
“Your father believed Lily was his granddaughter.””
Nathan froze.
“What?””
Elizabeth continued.
“He believed she was his child’s daughter.””
Nathan shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Then explain it.””
Elizabeth looked at Grace.
The pain in her eyes was clear.
“Because Grace was told a lie too.””
Grace went still.
“What?””
Elizabeth walked toward the table.
She picked up another file.
“This is the original medical record.””
Nathan looked at the document.
“The DNA test.””
Elizabeth nodded.
“The one proving Nathan was Lily’s father.””
Victoria interrupted.
“Fake.””
Nathan turned.
Victoria looked at him.
“The test was manipulated.””
Elizabeth nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Nathan felt sick.
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Elizabeth said:
“Thomas.””
The room became silent.
Nathan stared.
“My father?””
Elizabeth nodded.
“Your father changed the results.””
Grace stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, he wouldn’t.””
Elizabeth looked at her.
“He did.””
Grace shook her head.
“I knew Thomas was cruel.””
She swallowed.
“But he wouldn’t do that.””
Elizabeth’s expression was filled with sadness.
“You still don’t understand how far he was willing to go.””
Nathan looked at the papers.
“Why?””
The question was barely a whisper.
“Why would he fake my own daughter’s DNA?””
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing control.””
Nathan clenched his fists.
“Over what?””
Elizabeth pointed toward the documents.
“The company.””
The answer came too easily.
Too predictably.
Nathan felt exhausted.
Everything came back to power.
Money.
Inheritance.
Cole Industries.
“My father destroyed my life for a company.””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No.””
Nathan looked at her.
“He destroyed everyone’s lives because he believed the company was the only thing that mattered.””
A sound came from behind them.
Adrian.
He had entered the room silently.
Everyone turned.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“How long have you been here?””
Adrian ignored the question.
He looked at Lily.
Then at the documents.
“So you finally told him.””
Elizabeth’s face hardened.
“You knew.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
Nathan stared.
“You knew about Lily?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Nathan felt anger rising.
“And you said nothing?””
Adrian looked at him.
“You think I had the freedom to speak?””
“You came into my house.””
“I came to expose the truth.””
“You came to take my daughter.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“I came because she is my daughter.””
Grace stepped forward.
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You know it’s true.””
Grace shook her head.
“I know Nathan is her father.””
Adrian looked at Nathan.
“Do you?””
Nathan froze.
The question hit harder than expected.
Because suddenly, he remembered.
The fake DNA test.
The hidden files.
The lies.
Everyone had been manipulated.
But one thing remained.
Lily.
The little girl who called him Daddy.
The little girl who trusted him.
Nathan looked at her.
And all the confusion disappeared.
“I don’t care what any paper says.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She’s my daughter.””
His voice was steady.
“She needed a father.””
He looked at Grace.
“And I should have been there.””
Grace’s eyes filled with tears.
Nathan turned back.
“DNA doesn’t change that.””
Adrian looked away.
For the first time, he seemed to understand.
Then Elizabeth spoke.
“But there is one more thing.””
Nathan sighed.
“What now?””
Elizabeth opened another folder.
A video file.
She placed it on the table.
“This is the reason your father disappeared.””
Nathan looked confused.
“He faked his death because of this?””
Elizabeth nodded.
The video began playing.
Thomas appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
Nathan watched his father look directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, then I failed.””
Nathan stopped breathing.
Thomas continued.
“I spent my life believing power could protect the people I loved.””
A pause.
“It only destroyed them.””
Nathan looked down.
The recording continued.
“Elizabeth, if you found this, forgive me.””
His mother looked away.
“Grace, if Nathan learns the truth, tell him I was wrong.””
Grace covered her mouth.
Then Thomas said something that made everyone freeze.
“Lily is not the only child I hid.””
Nathan looked up.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“There was another child.””
Adrian stepped closer.
The room became tense.
Thomas looked into the camera.
“Someone who has been searching for Cole Industries.””
A pause.
“Someone who believes they are entitled to revenge.””
Nathan felt a chill.
“Who?””
The video flickered.
Then Thomas said:
“Her name is Sophia.””
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then the lights in the estate suddenly went out.
A scream came from the hallway.
Victoria.
Everyone turned.
When the emergency lights came on, Victoria was gone.
The front door was open.
And on the floor was a note.
Nathan picked it up.
Three words were written.
*I HAVE LILY.*
Nathan’s blood froze.
“Where is she?””
Grace looked around.
Her face turned white.
“Lily…”
Nathan ran.
But the room was empty.
His daughter was gone.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nathan answered immediately.
A woman’s voice spoke.
Calm.
Cold.
“You spent your whole life searching for the truth.””
Nathan’s hands shook.
“Who are you?””
A soft laugh.
“You already heard my name.””
Nathan froze.
“Sophia.””
The woman continued:
“Your father took everything from me.””
Nathan looked around desperately.
“Where is my daughter?””
“She’s safe.””
“If you hurt her—”
“You still don’t understand.””
Her voice hardened.
“Lily is not my weapon.””
A pause.
“She is my proof.””
Nathan’s heart pounded.
“Proof of what?””
The woman answered:
“That Thomas Cole was never the victim.””
Silence.
“He was the man who started this entire nightmare.””
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then at the empty room.
The woman continued:
“And tomorrow, Nathan, you will finally learn why your father wanted Lily hidden.””
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
Then he saw the message that arrived seconds later.
A photograph.
Lily sitting in a room.
Unharmed.
Beside her was a woman.
A woman Nathan had never seen before.
But everyone else recognized immediately.
Elizabeth whispered:
“No…”
Nathan looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Elizabeth’s face turned pale.
“The woman in the photograph.””
Nathan looked closer.
The woman holding Lily’s hand.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
Elizabeth whispered:
“Clara Voss.””
A second message appeared.
