Chapter 6: The Woman Who Saved Lily
The photograph trembled between Nathan’s fingers.
He stared at the unfamiliar woman holding baby Lily.
A stranger’s face.
A stranger’s name missing from every story he had ever been told.
Yet somehow, this woman had been standing at the center of everything.
“Who is she?”” Nathan asked again.
This time, nobody answered immediately.
The silence itself felt like a confession.
Grace looked at Thomas.
Thomas looked away.
And that terrified Nathan more than any lie they had told him.
Because his father had faced angry shareholders, government investigations, and business wars without showing fear.
But now, looking at a photograph, Thomas Cole looked like a man haunted by a ghost.
“Nobody speaks?”” Nathan asked.
His voice became sharper.
“Fine. I’ll start guessing.””
He held up the picture.
“This woman knew Lily.””
His eyes moved to Thomas.
“You knew her.””
Then to Grace.
“You knew her.””
Finally to Victoria.
“And somehow, I’m supposed to believe you all forgot to mention the woman who saved my daughter?””
Victoria’s expression tightened.
“I didn’t know about her.””
Nathan looked at her.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“Because you’ve been very convincing at pretending you know nothing.””
Victoria flinched.
Grace stepped closer.
“Nathan, listen to me.””
He turned toward her.
“I have been listening.””
His voice softened slightly.
“But every time I learn something new, it’s something everyone else knew first.””
Grace lowered her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
The question hurt.
Grace swallowed.
“When Lily was born.””
Nathan looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Before Grace could answer, Thomas spoke.
“Because I stopped her.””
Nathan turned.
“You?””
Thomas nodded.
“I told her if she contacted you, people would find out.””
Nathan’s hands tightened.
“People?””
Thomas looked toward Adrian.
“People who wanted the trust.””
Adrian crossed his arms.
“Don’t pretend you were protecting them.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I was.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice turned bitter.
“You were protecting the company.””
The accusation hung in the room.
Nathan looked at his father.
And for the first time, he wondered if Thomas even knew the difference.
“Who is the woman?”” Nathan asked.
Thomas finally answered.
“Her name was Clara Voss.””
Grace’s face changed.
“You knew her name?””
Thomas nodded.
“She worked for the family.””
Nathan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas walked slowly toward the desk.
“Clara was my father’s personal assistant.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“She was more than that.””
Thomas didn’t respond.
Nathan noticed.
“What aren’t you saying?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Clara discovered what your grandfather had done.””
“Which was?””
“That he had changed the inheritance agreement.””
Nathan looked confused.
“But you said Lily was connected to it.””
“She is.””
Thomas picked up the old file.
“But Clara discovered something else.””
He opened another document.
A birth certificate.
Nathan stared.
The name on it was not Lily Miller.
It was different.
His heart began pounding.
“What is this?””
Grace moved closer.
“I’ve never seen that.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I hid it.””
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“You hid my daughter’s birth certificate?””
Thomas didn’t defend himself.
“Yes.””
Nathan looked disgusted.
“Why?””
“Because someone was trying to erase her identity.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“And your father helped them.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I was trying to fix my mistake.””
Adrian laughed.
“After destroying everything?””
Nathan looked between them.
“What happened to Clara?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas whispered:
“She died.””
The room became quiet.
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“Five years ago.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Thomas’s jaw tightened.
“A car accident.””
Grace suddenly shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Nathan frowned.
“What?””
Grace stared at Thomas.
“That’s not what happened.””
Thomas froze.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Grace stepped forward.
“I was there.””
Nathan looked at her.
“You were there?””
Grace nodded slowly.
“The night Lily was born.””
Her voice became distant.
“I was leaving the hospital.””
She looked at the picture.
“Clara found me.””
Nathan listened carefully.
“She knew about Lily. She knew about your father. She told me there was someone watching the hospital.””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Grace continued.
“She helped me escape.””
Nathan’s chest tightened.
“And then?””
Grace looked down.
“Then she disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
She whispered:
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Lily.””
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
“From who?””
Grace looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
A voice came from the doorway.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
A security guard stood there.
But Nathan immediately knew something was wrong.
The man was holding a gun.
Thomas reacted instantly.
“Get down!””
The sound of the gunshot exploded through the mansion.
Nathan grabbed Lily and pulled her behind him.
Grace screamed.
The bullet hit the wooden doorframe.
The guard moved forward.
“Give me the child.””
Nathan’s entire body went cold.
Not fear.
Rage.
“You came into my house.””
The man raised the weapon.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
Nathan stepped in front of Lily.
“She’s my daughter.””
The man smiled.
“That’s exactly the problem.””
Thomas grabbed a heavy object from the desk and moved behind him.
Adrian noticed.
“Thomas.””
The older man didn’t hesitate.
He threw it.
The distraction gave Nathan enough time to move.
He rushed forward.
The two men crashed into the wall.
The gun slid across the floor.
Grace grabbed Lily and pulled her away.
Victoria stood frozen.
Watching.
Nathan struggled with the attacker.
The man was stronger than he looked.
“You should have stayed ignorant,” the man whispered.
Nathan pushed him back.
“Who sent you?””
The man smiled.
“You already know.””
Nathan froze.
Because suddenly, the answer felt obvious.
The man looked toward Victoria.
And said:
“She knows where the real documents are.””
Everyone turned.
Victoria’s face drained.
“No.””
The attacker laughed.
“Tell them.””
Nathan stared at her.
“Tell me what?””
Victoria stepped backward.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
The attacker reached into his pocket and pulled out a small device.
A recording.
He pressed a button.
Victoria’s own voice filled the room.
*“Once Lily disappears, Nathan will sign everything over.””*
Nathan stopped.
The recording continued.
*“He’ll believe Grace was unstable. He’ll believe the child was dangerous.””*
Grace covered her mouth.
Nathan looked at Victoria.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“Is that your voice?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
The attacker smiled.
“She planned everything.””
Nathan felt the world shift again.
The woman he was going to marry.
The woman who stood beside him.
The woman who claimed she loved him.
Had planned to erase his daughter.
Victoria suddenly looked at him.
“Nathan, please.””
He didn’t move.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“That’s the one thing I don’t believe anymore.””
The attacker reached for the gun.
But before he could grab it, Thomas moved.
A second gunshot echoed.
Everyone froze.
Nathan turned.
His father stood holding the weapon.
But he wasn’t aiming at the attacker.
He was aiming at the floor.
A warning.
“Enough.””
Thomas looked at everyone.
Then at Nathan.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
Nathan stared.
“What truth?””
Thomas lowered the gun.
“The woman in the photograph…”
He looked at Lily.
“She wasn’t just Clara Voss.””
Nathan waited.
May you like
Thomas whispered:
“She was your mother.””
