Chapter 7: The Mother He Never Knew
Nathan heard the words.
But his mind refused to accept them.
“She was your mother.””
The sentence echoed through the room.
Again.
And again.
He looked at the photograph in his hand.
Clara Voss.
The woman who saved Lily.
The woman everyone said was dead.
The woman Thomas had hidden.
His mother?
“No.””
Nathan shook his head slowly.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas lowered the gun.
“I know what it sounds like.””
“No.””
Nathan’s voice grew louder.
“My mother died when I was a child.””
Everyone went silent.
Because that was the story Nathan had been told his entire life.
His mother had died.
A tragic illness.
A painful loss.
A memory wrapped in sadness.
Thomas had always said she was gone before Nathan was old enough to remember her.
Nathan had grown up believing he had lost one parent.
Now he was learning he had lost two.
“Her name was not Clara Voss,” Thomas said quietly.
Nathan stared.
“Then who was she?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“Elizabeth Cole.””
The name struck him differently.
Not because he remembered it.
Because he didn’t.
A mother was supposed to leave memories.
A voice.
A smell.
A touch.
Something.
Nathan had nothing.
Only a blank space where she should have been.
“You told me she died.””
Thomas looked down.
“I lied.””
Nathan laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
“You’ve said that a lot tonight.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“You don’t know what it feels like to grow up wondering why everyone else had someone.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to look at other kids with their mothers and wonder what you did wrong.””
Thomas’s face changed.
For the first time, Nathan saw guilt.
Real guilt.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Nathan looked away.
“Everyone says that.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“And everyone failed you.””
The honesty stopped Nathan.
But only for a moment.
He looked back at the photograph.
“Why would my mother save Lily?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Because she knew what it felt like to have someone steal your life.””
The room became quiet.
Grace held Lily close.
Nathan looked at her.
“You knew?””
Grace shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I knew Clara.””
Nathan frowned.
“But not who she really was?””
“No.””
Grace looked at the photograph.
“She never told me.””
Thomas walked toward the desk.
“She changed her identity after she left me.””
Nathan stared.
“Why?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because of me.””
Nobody spoke.
Thomas continued.
“Your grandfather was powerful. Dangerous. He controlled everything around him.””
He touched the old files.
“When Elizabeth discovered what he was doing, she tried to expose him.””
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“What was he doing?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Illegal deals. Manipulation. Destroying anyone who threatened him.””
Adrian spoke from the corner.
“Exactly what he did to my mother.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.””
Nathan looked between the two men.
A father and son who had both been destroyed by the same family.
“So my mother disappeared because of my grandfather.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you let everyone think she was dead?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””
Nathan looked at him.
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than Nathan expected.
“You knew I had a mother somewhere.””
Thomas said nothing.
“You knew I could have found her.””
“I tried.””
Nathan stared.
“You tried?””
Thomas looked toward the photograph.
“I searched for years.””
“But you never told me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Thomas’s voice broke.
“Because every time I got close, someone else got there first.””
Nathan felt a chill.
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the attacker lying unconscious on the floor.
“The same people who came for Lily tonight.””
The attacker suddenly moved.
Everyone reacted.
Nathan stepped forward.
The man opened his eyes slightly.
Then laughed.
“You’re all still pretending you can win.””
Thomas aimed the gun.
“Who sent you?””
The man smiled.
“You know.””
Thomas’s face darkened.
“Tell me.””
The man looked at Nathan.
“Your father never told you the best part.””
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
The attacker coughed.
“Your mother didn’t disappear because she was afraid.””
A pause.
“She disappeared because she found the truth.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“What truth?””
The man smiled.
“The reason your father’s company exists.””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?””
The attacker looked at Thomas.
“Tell him.””
Thomas remained silent.
Nathan turned.
“Dad.””
Thomas looked away.
That was enough.
Nathan felt his stomach drop.
“What did you do?””
Thomas whispered:
“I inherited the company.””
Nathan waited.
“That’s not an answer.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Your grandfather didn’t build Cole Industries alone.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“My mother’s family helped build it.””
Nathan looked at Adrian.
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“And?””
Thomas swallowed.
“When Elena became pregnant with Adrian, your grandfather feared losing control.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He erased my mother.””
Nathan understood.
“He took everything from her.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Thomas looked down.
“He made me the public heir.””
Nathan stared.
The company.
The fortune.
The name.
Everything.
Built on someone else’s loss.
“You knew.””
Thomas nodded.
“I found out years later.””
“And you did nothing?””
The question cut deep.
Thomas looked destroyed.
“I was weak.””
Nathan looked away.
For years, he had admired his father’s strength.
His confidence.
His control.
Now he saw something different.
A man who had allowed fear to rule every decision.
A man who had hurt people because he was afraid of losing power.
The attacker suddenly laughed again.
“You’re wasting time.””
Nathan turned.
The man smiled.
“Ask him where your mother is.””
Thomas froze.
Nathan noticed.
“What?””
The attacker looked satisfied.
“She’s not dead.””
The room went silent.
Nathan slowly turned toward Thomas.
“Dad.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Is she alive?””
Thomas looked at him.
His eyes filled with pain.
“Yes.””
Nathan stopped breathing.
“She’s alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Thomas looked at Lily.
Then at Grace.
Then at Nathan.
“I don’t know.””
Nathan stared.
“You don’t know?””
“She disappeared before I could find her.””
The attacker laughed.
“Liar.””
Thomas’s face changed.
The attacker continued:
“You know exactly where she went.””
Nathan stepped toward his father.
“Dad.””
Thomas looked broken.
“I know where she was last seen.””
“Where?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The Cole family estate in Switzerland.””
Nathan frowned.
“What?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Your mother went there to find the original inheritance documents.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“The originals?””
Thomas nodded.
“The documents that prove everything.””
Nathan looked at Lily.
“The documents proving she owns the company.””
Thomas nodded.
“And proving who tried to steal it.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Nathan’s.
Not Victoria’s.
The attacker’s.
The unconscious man smiled.
“You should answer.””
Nathan looked down at the phone beside him.
A single name appeared on the screen.
*Elizabeth Cole.*
Nathan’s heart stopped.
His mother.
The woman he had spent his entire life believing was gone.
His hands trembled as he picked up the phone.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But warm.
“Nathan?””
His knees almost gave out.
“Mom?””
A quiet sob came through the speaker.
The sound of someone who had waited years to hear one word.
“My son…”
Nathan closed his eyes.
He had imagined this moment a thousand times.
But never like this.
Never after discovering betrayal.
Never after losing faith in everyone around him.
“Where are you?”” he whispered.
The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.
“I don’t have much time.””
“Tell me.””
“Nathan…”
Her voice became urgent.
“Do not trust Thomas.””
Nathan looked at his father.
Thomas went pale.
“Why?””
His mother answered:
“Because your father knows the truth about Lily’s real father.””
The room froze.
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then at Lily.
“What are you talking about?””
Elizabeth’s voice trembled.
“Your daughter is connected to this family.””
A pause.
“But not in the way you think.””
Nathan felt his heart sink.
“Mom…”
Then the call cut off.
One final message appeared on the screen.
*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH.*
And underneath it was an address.
An address Nathan recognized.
The old Cole estate.
May you like
The place where his mother disappeared.
The place where the final secret was waiting.
