Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nathan couldn’t move.
The hallway seemed to stretch endlessly in front of him.
The man standing in the shadows looked impossible.
The same gray eyes.
The same sharp jawline.
The same calm expression that had controlled every room he entered.
It was his father.
Thomas Cole.
The man who had been buried two years ago.
The man whose voice had called him minutes earlier.
The man who had just appeared inside his own mansion.
Nathan’s fingers tightened around the flashlight.
“No.””
The stranger didn’t react.
“Nathan.””
Hearing that familiar voice made his stomach twist.
“No,” Nathan repeated.
“You’re not him.””
The man stepped closer.
The light revealed more of his face.
Older.
More tired.
But unmistakably familiar.
Victoria stood behind Nathan, silent.
And that scared him more than anything.
Because Victoria wasn’t surprised.
She was afraid.
“Victoria,” Nathan said without looking away, “tell me I’m losing my mind.””
She didn’t answer.
That was all the confirmation he needed.
Nathan’s voice became colder.
“You knew.””
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“I knew he was alive.””
The words landed like a punch.
Nathan turned slowly.
“You knew my father was alive?””
“I found out months ago.””
“Months?””
His anger finally broke through.
“Months, and you said nothing?””
Victoria stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Nathan laughed.
A hollow sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked at Thomas.
“My father. You. Grace.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Everyone protects me by lying to me.””
Thomas sighed.
“You have every right to hate me.””
Nathan stared at him.
“Do you know what I did at your funeral?””
Thomas looked down.
Nathan’s voice shook.
“I stood there while people talked about what a great man you were.””
His jaw tightened.
“I defended you.””
Silence.
“I told everyone they misunderstood you.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“And I was wrong.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Why?””
The question carried years of pain.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
Thomas looked toward the hidden room.
“Because if I stayed alive, they would have come after you.””
Nathan frowned.
“Who?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked past Nathan.
Toward the staircase.
Toward Grace.
Nathan followed his gaze.
Grace stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding Lily tightly.
She had heard everything.
Her face was pale.
Lily looked at Thomas with confusion.
“Who is that man?””
Grace’s arms tightened around her.
“Nathan…”
Her voice trembled.
“Don’t let him get near her.””
Thomas looked hurt.
“I never wanted to hurt that child.””
Grace’s eyes filled with anger.
“You already did.””
The room went silent.
Nathan looked between them.
“You know him.””
Grace nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Because he was there when Lily was born.””
Nathan’s heart stopped.
“What?””
Thomas looked away.
Grace continued.
“Five years ago, when I went into labor, your father was the one who found me.””
Nathan stared at Thomas.
“You found her?””
Thomas nodded.
“I did.””
“And you still kept her away from me?””
The older man looked broken.
“Yes.””
Nathan’s hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at Lily.
“Because I believed I was saving you.””
Grace shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You were saving yourself.””
Thomas didn’t argue.
That hurt Nathan more.
Because his father’s silence admitted more than any explanation could.
Lily looked up at Nathan.
“Daddy?””
The simple word pulled him back.
He immediately moved toward her.
“I’m here.””
She reached for his hand.
Nathan took it.
Then he looked at Thomas.
“Start talking.””
Thomas nodded.
“Five years ago, I discovered Grace was pregnant.””
Nathan glanced at Grace.
“She came to tell you.””
Grace nodded.
“I tried.””
Her eyes filled with memories.
“I waited outside your office for three hours.””
Nathan swallowed.
He had no idea.
“I saw your father arrive.””
Thomas looked down.
“I told her she couldn’t see you.””
Nathan’s face hardened.
“What did you say?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“I told her that if she told you about the baby, I would destroy her.””
Grace looked away.
Nathan felt sick.
“You threatened her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Because I had discovered someone was already watching her.””
Nathan frowned.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Victoria.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Thomas continued.
“Your fiancée’s family.””
Nathan looked at Victoria.
“What does your family have to do with this?””
Victoria’s voice shook.
“Nathan, please.””
Thomas ignored her.
“Five years ago, the Whitmore family was drowning financially.””
Victoria looked angry now.
“Stop.””
“They made a deal.””
Nathan stared.
“With who?””
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“With someone who wanted control over Cole Industries.””
The answer created another silence.
“Who?””
Thomas looked directly at Nathan.
“Your uncle.””
Nathan froze.
“My uncle is dead.””
Thomas nodded.
“That’s what everyone believes.””
Another impossible truth.
Nathan felt like the ground beneath him had disappeared.
“How many people in my life are lying to me?””
Thomas looked at him.
“More than you realize.””
Suddenly, a loud noise came from downstairs.
Everyone turned.
The front door opened.
A man’s voice echoed through the mansion.
“Nathan?””
Thomas’s face changed instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Turn off the lights.””
Nathan frowned.
“What?””
“Now.””
Something about his father’s tone made everyone obey.
The mansion went dark again.
Footsteps moved through the entrance hall.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone was walking inside as if they owned the place.
Nathan whispered:
“Who is that?””
Thomas answered softly.
“The person who started all of this.””
The footsteps stopped.
A man spoke from below.
“Victoria?””
Nathan looked at her.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Answer me.””
She didn’t move.
The voice continued.
“Victoria, I know you’re here.””
Nathan watched as fear took over her.
Not the fake fear she had shown earlier.
Real fear.
“Who is he?”” Nathan asked.
Victoria whispered:
“He wasn’t supposed to come.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the man downstairs called out again.
“Nathan Cole.””
The sound of his own name made Nathan freeze.
“I know you found the room.””
Thomas whispered:
“Don’t let him see Lily.””
Nathan looked at his father.
“Why?””
Thomas’s expression turned grim.
“Because he didn’t come for me.””
The footsteps started again.
Coming closer.
“He came for her.””
Grace pulled Lily behind her.
Nathan moved in front of them.
For the first time that night, he wasn’t thinking like a businessman.
He wasn’t thinking about inheritance.
Companies.
Reputations.
He was thinking like a father.
The stranger appeared at the bottom of the staircase.
A tall man wearing a dark coat.
His eyes immediately found Lily.
And he smiled.
“There she is.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored him.
His gaze remained fixed on the child.
“I’ve been searching for you for five years.””
Lily grabbed Grace’s hand.
“Mommy…”
Nathan’s voice became dangerous.
“You’re not taking another step.””
The man finally looked at him.
Then smiled.
“You really don’t know, do you?””
Nathan didn’t answer.
The man tilted his head.
“Your daughter isn’t the secret.””
Nathan felt a chill.
“Then what is?””
The man smiled wider.
“The secret is why your father was willing to fake his own death.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Leave them alone.””
The stranger laughed.
“Still pretending to be the hero?””
Then he looked at Nathan.
“The truth is simple.””
He pointed toward Lily.
“She isn’t the child your father tried to hide from you.””
A pause.
“She’s the child he tried to hide from me.””
Nathan’s heart pounded.
The stranger took one final step forward.
May you like
And said:
“Because Lily is the only person alive who can prove I own half of Cole Industries.””
