Chapter 5: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About
The words hung in the air like a threat.
“Lily is the only person alive who can prove I own half of Cole Industries.””
Nathan stared at the stranger.
For a moment, his mind refused to process what he had heard.
Half of Cole Industries.
The company his grandfather built.
The company his father controlled.
The company Nathan had spent years protecting.
The company that had made his family one of the most powerful names in the country.
And somehow, a four-year-old girl was connected to it.
“No,” Nathan said quietly.
The stranger smiled.
“You really do look like your father when you’re angry.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man adjusted his coat calmly.
“My name is Adrian Cole.””
The room froze.
Even the air seemed to disappear.
Nathan looked at Thomas.
His father’s expression told him everything.
“You know him,” Nathan said.
Thomas didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who is he?””
Thomas looked older than he had moments ago.
“He’s your half-brother.””
The words were almost impossible to understand.
Nathan stared.
“What?””
Adrian smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked amused.
“The famous Nathan Cole finally discovers his perfect family wasn’t so perfect.””
Victoria remained silent.
Nathan turned toward her.
“And you knew this too.””
Victoria looked away.
That was enough.
Nathan’s anger burned hotter.
“How long?””
Victoria swallowed.
“I found out last year.””
“Last year?””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in my life has been collecting secrets.””
Adrian stepped into the room.
“Your father built an empire on secrets.””
Thomas’s eyes hardened.
“Careful, Adrian.””
“Why?””
Adrian smiled.
“Because I’m telling the truth?””
Nathan looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Nathan, listen to me.””
“No.””
Nathan’s voice stopped him.
“No more half-truths.””
He pointed toward Lily.
“She deserves better than this.””
Grace looked at him.
For the first time, she saw something different in Nathan.
Not the angry businessman.
Not the betrayed son.
A father.
A man who finally understood what had been stolen from him.
Nathan looked at Thomas.
“Tell me everything.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Then he began.
“Thirty years ago, before I married your mother, I had another relationship.””
Adrian leaned against the doorway.
“With my mother.””
Thomas continued.
“Her name was Elena.””
Nathan listened.
“My father never spoke about her.””
“Because he was ashamed.””
Thomas looked at Adrian.
“Elena became pregnant.””
Nathan’s eyes moved to Adrian.
“And?””
Thomas’s voice became heavy.
“My father forced me to abandon them.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Your grandfather didn’t just force him.””
Nathan looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“He paid people to make sure my mother disappeared.””
The room went silent.
Nathan looked at Thomas.
“Is that true?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty was painful.
Nathan shook his head.
“You destroyed two families.””
Thomas looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Nathan’s voice broke.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your whole life was built on lies.””
Thomas looked at Lily.
“I do.””
Nathan followed his gaze.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Thomas walked toward the desk and picked up one of the old files.
“Your grandfather created a private trust before he died.””
Nathan frowned.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
Thomas opened the file.
“The trust was designed to prevent the company from being controlled by one branch of the family.””
He looked at Adrian.
“Your grandfather believed power had corrupted the Coles.””
Adrian smiled.
“Smart man.””
Thomas continued.
“The trust required proof of all direct descendants.””
Nathan stared.
“And?””
Thomas looked at Lily.
“And five years ago, when Grace gave birth, we discovered something.””
Grace stiffened.
Nathan looked at her.
“What?””
She looked away.
Thomas answered.
“Lily carried the final piece of evidence.””
Nathan frowned.
“What evidence?””
Thomas turned the document around.
A handwritten note.
Nathan stepped closer.
The handwriting belonged to his grandfather.
*The first child born from Nathan Cole’s bloodline shall inherit control if no other legal heir exists.*
Nathan looked confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Thomas nodded.
“Because it wasn’t meant for you.””
Silence.
Adrian stepped forward.
“It was meant for whoever came after you.””
Nathan looked at Lily.
His daughter.
The little girl who had spent her life hiding.
The little girl who had no idea that powerful people were fighting over her existence.
“She’s a child,” Nathan said.
Adrian’s expression softened slightly.
“For the first time tonight, you sound like a father.””
Nathan ignored the comment.
“What happens when she proves this?””
Thomas answered:
“She becomes the majority beneficiary.””
Nathan froze.
“Of Cole Industries?””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Victoria finally spoke.
“That’s impossible.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized too late that she had revealed too much.
Nathan turned slowly.
“Why is that impossible?””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“I mean… legally.””
Nathan stared.
“You knew exactly what this meant.””
Victoria said nothing.
Grace watched her carefully.
“You weren’t trying to hurt me because of papers.””
Victoria’s eyes moved toward Grace.
“You should have stayed gone.””
Nathan heard the threat.
His expression changed.
“You were never afraid of Grace telling me.””
Victoria looked at him.
“No.””
“Then what were you afraid of?””
The silence answered.
Nathan stepped closer.
“You were afraid Lily would be found.””
Victoria’s jaw tightened.
“She changes everything.””
Nathan’s voice lowered.
“She’s a child.””
Victoria looked at Lily.
For a brief moment, Nathan saw something terrifying.
Not hatred.
Desperation.
“She’s the reason everything I built disappears.””
Grace moved protectively.
“What did you build?””
Victoria looked at Nathan.
“Your future.””
Nathan stared.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“I was supposed to become the next power beside you.””
The words sounded rehearsed.
Like she had repeated them to herself many times.
“Your father promised me that.””
Nathan’s face went cold.
“My father promised you?””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked disgusted.
“I never promised you that.””
Victoria laughed.
“You promised me everything when you needed my family’s help.””
Nathan looked at Thomas.
“What did she mean?””
Thomas remained silent.
Adrian answered.
“Your father needed the Whitmores to hide financial problems inside the company.””
Nathan’s stomach tightened.
“What problems?””
Adrian looked around the room.
“Problems caused by him.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Nathan realized something.
The company he inherited.
The fortune he controlled.
The perfect family image.
It was all cracking.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
“Daddy?””
Nathan turned immediately.
She pointed toward the file in Thomas’s hand.
“There’s a picture.””
Everyone looked.
A small photograph had fallen from the folder.
Nathan picked it up.
His breath caught.
It was a picture of Grace.
But she wasn’t alone.
She was standing beside Thomas.
And beside them was another person.
A woman.
Holding baby Lily.
On the back of the photograph were three words:
*The first mistake.*
Nathan looked at Grace.
“What is this?””
Grace’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
But Thomas did.
And Nathan saw the fear return to his father’s eyes.
“Dad?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“That picture shouldn’t exist.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because that woman died five years ago.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Adrian frowned.
“What woman?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
The woman holding baby Lily.
The woman nobody had mentioned.
The woman who was supposed to be dead.
Then Grace whispered the words that changed everything.
“Nathan…”
Her voice shook.
“That’s not Lily’s mother.””
Nathan looked at her.
“Then who is she?””
Grace stared at the picture.
“She’s the woman who saved Lily’s life.””
May you like
A pause.
“And the woman who knew who really tried to kill her.””
