Chapter 3: The Room Behind the Wall

The message remained on Nathan’s phone screen.

*DON’T TRUST THE WOMAN YOU’RE ABOUT TO MARRY.*

For a man who built his entire life on logic, numbers, and calculated decisions, Nathan Cole had never felt more lost.

The mansion around him was silent.

Too silent.

The power outage had turned the familiar luxury of his home into something unfamiliar. The paintings on the walls became shadows. The expensive furniture became dark shapes. Every corner seemed to hide a secret waiting to be discovered.

And somewhere above them, someone was trapped inside a room that was never supposed to exist.

Nathan looked at Victoria.

For years, he had believed he knew her.

He believed he knew her smile.

Her kindness.

Her ambitions.

He believed the woman standing beside him was the person who would stand beside him when they built a family together.

But now every memory felt different.

Every conversation had another meaning.

“Nathan,” Victoria said softly.

Her voice sounded desperate.

“Please don’t do this.””

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Do what?””

“Look at me like I’m a stranger.””

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“I don’t know if I ever knew you.””

The words hit her harder than he expected.

Victoria stepped backward.

“You’re angry.””

“No.””

Nathan looked toward the staircase.

“I’m confused.””

He held up his phone.

“My dead father just sent me a warning about you.””

Victoria shook her head quickly.

“That isn’t your father.””

“Then who is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you know enough to be afraid.””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But Nathan saw it.

And Grace saw it too.

“Mommy…” Lily whispered.

Grace immediately crouched beside her.

“I’m here.””

The little girl pointed toward the darkness upstairs.

“Is the bad lady going to hurt us again?””

Victoria flinched.

“I would never hurt her.””

Lily moved closer to Grace.

“You hit Mommy.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Victoria’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

For the first time, she had no perfect response.

Nathan looked away.

He couldn’t erase what he had seen.

He couldn’t explain the fear in Lily’s eyes.

“Stay with Grace,” Nathan said.

Victoria looked at him.

“What?””

“I’m going upstairs.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too urgently.

Nathan turned.

“Why?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because it’s dangerous.””

“Then you should understand why I need to go.””

She grabbed his arm.

“Nathan, listen to me.””

He looked down at her hand.

Slowly, she released him.

Her confidence was gone.

The woman who always controlled every room suddenly looked like someone who had lost control.

“I’m trying to protect you,” she whispered.

Nathan stared at her.

“From what?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Nathan turned away.

“Grace.””

She looked up.

“Take Lily and stay here.””

Grace hesitated.

“Nathan…”

“I need the truth.””

The pain in her expression deepened.

“I know.””

A flashlight appeared in Nathan’s hand from the emergency drawer near the hallway.

He walked upstairs alone.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The mansion had belonged to his family for three generations.

He had grown up here.

He knew every hallway.

Every staircase.

Every room.

But somehow, there was a room his own father had hidden from him.

At the top floor, Nathan stopped in front of Thomas Cole’s old study.

The door was slightly open.

That alone made his stomach tighten.

His father had always locked this room.

Even after his death, Nathan had never allowed anyone to remove anything inside.

Not because of respect.

Because something about the room always made him uncomfortable.

He pushed the door open.

The smell hit him first.

Old leather.

Dust.

And something else.

Fear.

The flashlight moved across the shelves.

Thousands of books.

Family photographs.

Awards.

Documents.

Everything looked untouched.

Nathan stepped inside.

“Where are you?””

No answer.

He searched the room carefully.

Then he remembered.

*The hidden room behind the bookshelf.*

Nathan walked toward the largest shelf.

His father’s favorite.

A wall of old business books.

He ran his fingers along the edges.

Nothing.

He pushed.

Nothing happened.

Then he noticed something.

A small scratch near the bottom corner.

A mark.

Like someone had opened it many times.

Nathan pressed against it.

A soft click echoed.

The bookshelf slowly moved.

Behind it was a narrow doorway.

Nathan stared.

His father had hidden an entire room behind a bookshelf.

A room that no one knew existed.

He stepped inside.

The space was small.

Cold.

Unlike the luxurious study outside, this room looked like an archive.

Boxes.

Files.

Hard drives.

Documents stacked everywhere.

Nathan lifted the flashlight.

Then stopped.

A photograph sat on the desk.

A photograph of Grace.

Five years younger.

Holding a newborn baby.

His daughter.

Nathan picked it up with shaking hands.

On the back was written:

*She must never reach him.*

His chest tightened.

He opened the nearest file.

The first page contained a report.

His eyes scanned the words.

Then froze.

*Subject: Grace Miller.*

*Status: Removed from Nathan Cole’s life.*

Nathan felt sick.

Removed.

Not left.

Not disappeared.

Removed.

Someone had planned it.

Someone had controlled it.

He turned the page.

There were payment records.

Private investigators.

Legal threats.

False documents.

And one signature appeared repeatedly.

His father’s.

But beneath his father’s signature was another name.

A name Nathan recognized.

Victoria Whitmore.

The door behind him suddenly creaked.

Nathan spun around.

The flashlight moved toward the entrance.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

He stepped forward.

“Show yourself.””

A shadow moved.

Then a voice.

“You were never supposed to find this.””

Nathan’s grip tightened.

“Victoria?””

She stepped into the light.

Her face was different.

No tears.

No fear.

Only cold determination.

“How long were you planning to lie to me?”” Nathan asked.

Victoria closed the door behind her.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the files in his hand.

“You think those papers tell the whole story?””

“Do they not?””

Victoria walked closer.

“Your father was a dangerous man.””

Nathan laughed.

“You helped him.””

“I was trying to survive.””

The answer shocked him.

“What?””

Victoria looked away.

“When I met your father, I was twenty-four.””

Nathan stared.

“You knew him before me.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Her voice became quieter.

“My family owed him money.””

Nathan said nothing.

“He controlled people,” she continued.

“He owned their homes, their businesses, their futures.””

“And you?””

Victoria looked at him.

“He offered me a way out.””

Nathan felt a cold sensation.

“What did he ask for?””

Silence.

Then:

“You.””

Nathan froze.

“What?””

“He wanted you to marry someone who understood your family.””

Nathan stared at her.

“You’re saying our relationship was arranged?””

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Not at first.””

That sentence was worse.

Nathan looked down at the documents.

“You knew about Lily.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Grace was pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father forced her away.””

Victoria didn’t deny it.

Nathan felt something break inside him.

“How could you?””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Because I knew what your father was capable of.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She looked at him.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

Victoria took a deep breath.

“Your father didn’t just threaten Grace.””

Nathan waited.

“He tried to destroy her.””

The room became silent.

“And I helped him.””

Nathan’s face went blank.

The honesty stunned him.

“Why admit that?””

Victoria looked toward the hidden files.

“Because you’re going to find out anyway.””

Nathan stepped back.

“You attacked Grace because of the documents.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Victoria’s eyes shifted.

For the first time, real emotion appeared.

Panic.

“Because Grace knows something that can destroy all of us.””

Nathan stared.

“What?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

Nathan immediately moved back.

“What are you doing?””

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here tonight because I was going to give you this.””

Nathan didn’t move.

“What is it?””

Victoria held it out.

“The last thing your father left me.””

Nathan looked at the envelope.

On the front was his father’s handwriting.

Three words.

*For Nathan only.*

Before Nathan could take it, a loud crash came from downstairs.

A scream followed.

Grace.

Nathan ran toward the door.

But Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

He turned.

Her face was terrified.

“Nathan…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“If Grace found the second file…”

Nathan’s blood went cold.

“What second file?””

Victoria looked toward the hallway.

“The one about who Lily’s father really is.””

Nathan stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria slowly shook her head.

“No.””

A dark shadow moved behind the doorway.

Someone else had been listening.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice Nathan had never expected to hear again.

“Actually…”

Nathan turned.

His entire body froze.

Because standing outside the hidden room was a man who looked exactly like his dead father.

May you like

And he said:

“Nathan, we need to talk about the child who was never yours.””
