The Locked Room / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Door

The police station smelled like old paper and cold coffee.

I had spent six hours in an interrogation room staring at the same gray wall.

Six hours listening to people ask me questions about a night I couldn’t remember.

“Did you lock your wife inside the room?””

“No.””

“Did you threaten her?””

“No.””

“Did you believe she was dead?””

“Yes.””

“Did you ever investigate her disappearance?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you stop?””

I had no answer.

Because I didn’t remember stopping.

That was the terrifying part.

My life had missing pieces.

And someone else had filled those pieces with lies.

The detective across from me closed the folder.

“Mr. Hawthorne, we found your fingerprints on the lock.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your fingerprints.””

He pushed photographs across the table.

The key.

The door.

The room.

My fingerprints everywhere.

I felt sick.

“Someone set this up.””

The detective watched me carefully.

“Who?””

I almost laughed.

“My father.””

He raised an eyebrow.

“Your father died five years ago.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The room went quiet.

“He’s alive.””

The detective leaned back.

“Mr. Hawthorne.””

“I know what I saw.””

“Your father’s death certificate is real.””

“Then someone forged it.””

The detective studied me.

“You understand how this sounds?””

Yes.

I understood.

A man claiming his dead father was alive.

A missing wife suddenly returning.

A video showing him near the place she was imprisoned.

A house full of secrets.

I sounded guilty.

That was exactly what Richard wanted.

The door opened.

A lawyer entered.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

A woman stood there holding a file.

“I’m Evelyn Cross.””

“I didn’t call a lawyer.””

“I know.””

She placed the file on the table.

“I was hired by your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother is dead.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“That’s what you were told.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

She opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

Alive.

Older.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Claire.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

“Proof that your family has been lying to you for years.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Where are they?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Your mother is the person who contacted me.””

I stood.

“Where?””

“She wants to meet you.””

The detective immediately stepped forward.

“You’re not going anywhere.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She has evidence that could clear him.””

The detective looked uncertain.

I didn’t care.

I needed answers.

Because suddenly the truth was bigger than Claire.

Bigger than Richard.

Bigger than Vanessa.

My entire family was built on secrets.

Two hours later, I sat in a private room across from the woman I thought I buried.

My mother.

Eleanor Hawthorne.

She looked older.

Fragile.

But alive.

The first thing she said was:

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t speak.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

She cried.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because your father was going to kill me.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed me.

She reached across the table.

“Daniel, you need to remember something.””

“What?””

“The night Claire disappeared wasn’t the night everything began.””

I stared at her.

“It was the night everything ended.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

She looked at me.

“Your father didn’t create the monster.””

My heart slowed.

“What?””

“He inherited it.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather built the first hidden rooms beneath Hawthorne Estate.””

I said nothing.

“He used them to control people.””

My mother looked away.

“Richard grew up watching him.””

“So my father became like him.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He became worse.””

I felt sick.

“Then why did you let him?””

“Because I tried to stop him.””

“Then why disappear?””

“Because I failed.””

The answer broke something in me.

“What happened to Claire?””

My mother’s expression changed.

“Claire found the family archive.””

“What archive?””

“A collection of documents hidden beneath the estate.””

“About what?””

She looked directly at me.

“Every crime committed by every Hawthorne.””

I swallowed.

“And she wanted to expose it.””

“Yes.””

“Then why was she blamed?””

My mother looked down.

“Because someone helped Richard.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“Who?””

My mother whispered:

“Daniel…”

The door behind us opened.

Everyone turned.

Claire stood there.

My heart stopped.

The detective reached for his weapon.

But Claire wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at me.

With tears in her eyes.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I stood.

“What truth?””

She walked closer.

“The night I disappeared…”

She looked terrified.

“I wasn’t kidnapped.””

The room went silent.

“I left.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She nodded slowly.

“I left because I was running from you.””

The words crushed me.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because you were the one who unlocked the door.””

My entire body went cold.

May you like

Claire whispered:

“And you were the one who begged me to forget.””
