The Locked Room / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

The ballroom screens turned on by themselves.

Nobody touched them.

Nobody needed to.

My father had planned this.

The engagement decorations still covered the walls.

White roses.

Golden lights.

A giant photograph of Vanessa and me smiling together.

It looked like a celebration.

Until the screen changed.

The first image appeared.

A security camera recording.

Black and white.

A date appeared in the corner.

Seven years earlier.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the hallway.

The same hallway we were standing in.

The same oak door.

Claire’s face appeared on the screen.

She was younger.

Angry.

Terrified.

She was arguing with someone outside the room.

Vanessa.

The entire crowd watched.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No…”

The video continued.

Claire pointed toward the camera.

“You can’t do this.””

Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.

“I’m trying to keep you alive.””

“You’re helping him.””

“I’m trying to stop him.””

“You locked me in here.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I had no choice.””

The video froze.

A wave of whispers filled the ballroom.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me you never knew.””

She looked like she might collapse.

“I didn’t know he recorded it.””

My father walked toward the screen.

“You see, Daniel? Everyone thinks there are heroes and villains.””

He smiled.

“But most people are just scared.””

Claire stared at the screen.

Her expression was unreadable.

“You kept that recording?””

Richard shrugged.

“Insurance.””

I stepped toward him.

“You destroyed her life.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“She destroyed mine.””

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at Claire.

“Tell him.””

Claire didn’t answer.

That frightened me.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“I found out your father wasn’t my only enemy.””

I waited.

She took a breath.

“Someone inside the company was stealing money.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“Millions.””

Richard laughed.

“And she thought she could expose everyone.””

Claire looked at him.

“I thought I could stop you.””

“You thought you understood the game.””

He turned to me.

“But she never told you the most important part.””

I looked between them.

“What part?””

Richard smiled.

“Your wife was going to leave you.””

The words hit unexpectedly.

Claire’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Richard continued.

“She was planning to take Lily and disappear.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at Claire.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Claire?””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I thought you were in danger.””

I shook my head.

“You were going to take my daughter away.””

“I was trying to save her.””

“From me?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“From him.””

She pointed at Richard.

My father’s smile disappeared slightly.

Claire continued.

“I found documents proving Richard was using Hawthorne Industries to move illegal money. I was going to report it. But then he found out.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“And Vanessa came to me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I wanted to help.””

Claire nodded.

“You did.””

Everyone looked confused.

“You helped him,” I said.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“At first.””

The confession hung in the air.

She looked at me.

“I was afraid of him. I thought if I cooperated, he would leave me alone.””

“Then why keep Claire locked up?””

Her voice broke.

“Because he threatened Lily.””

Everything stopped.

My anger froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

“He said if I didn’t keep Claire quiet, he would make Lily disappear too.””

Lily grabbed my hand tighter.

Richard sighed.

“You’re making yourself sound innocent.””

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You’re a monster.””

He smiled.

“And yet you helped me.””

The worst part was that he was right.

Vanessa had saved Claire eventually.

But only after helping trap her.

A broken person could still do terrible things.

A terrible person could still have moments of humanity.

And somehow, that made everything harder.

Then the screen changed.

A new video appeared.

This one was recent.

The camera showed the hidden room.

Claire inside.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing outside the door.

Someone who had visited her.

Someone I recognized.

My hands went numb.

Because the person on the screen was not my father.

May you like

Not Vanessa.

It was me.
