Chapter 4: The Man Beneath the House
For five years, I had stood beside my father’s grave and believed I knew where his story ended.
I remembered the funeral.
The black suits.
The rain falling over the cemetery.
The people telling me, “Your father was a great man.””
I remembered placing flowers on his coffin.
I remembered watching the dirt cover the last connection I had to the man who raised me.
But now his voice was coming from beneath my house.
And every piece of my reality was breaking apart.
The trapdoor remained open.
A dim yellow light flickered from below.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then the voice came again.
“Daniel.””
My hands tightened around Lily.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Don’t go down there.””
I looked at her.
“You spent seven years trapped because of him.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I spent seven years trapped because I underestimated him.””
The words stopped me.
Because Claire had never been someone who frightened easily.
Before everything happened, she was the strongest person I knew.
She was the woman who argued with lawyers twice her age.
The woman who stood up to powerful people.
The woman who once told me, “The truth doesn’t become less true just because someone has money.””
But now she was shaking.
Vanessa stepped toward the trapdoor.
“Daniel, we need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“You said that before.””
“I mean it.””
“You always mean it when you’re hiding something.””
Her face fell.
A long silence followed.
Then Claire spoke quietly.
“Your father built tunnels underneath this estate.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He had rooms built beneath the house. Places nobody knew about.””
My eyes moved toward the darkness.
“How do you know?””
Claire swallowed.
“Because that’s where he kept me before Vanessa moved me upstairs.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“You knew about this.””
Vanessa’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“You knew there were rooms under my house?””
“Yes.””
“You knew Claire was alive?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hit harder than any lie.
Lily buried her face against me.
“Daddy…”
I looked down at my daughter.
Then at the woman I planned to marry.
The woman who had smiled beside me while carrying the secret that destroyed my family.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Because your father threatened everyone.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“He had recordings. Documents. Information about people in power.
Police officers. Judges. Business owners.””
She looked at Claire.
“He collected secrets because secrets protected him.””
Claire nodded.
“He knew nobody would touch him if he had enough people trapped by fear.””
I looked at the open trapdoor.
“And now he’s alive.””
A slow clap echoed from below.
Everyone froze.
“Well done, Daniel.””
My blood turned cold.
The voice was older now.
Rougher.
But unmistakable.
A man slowly climbed the stairs.
First came a hand.
Then a shoulder.
Then a face I thought I would never see again.
My father.
Richard Hawthorne.
He looked older.
His hair was completely gray.
His face was thinner.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
Watching everything.
Lily gasped.
“That’s Grandpa.””
I stepped backward.
“You’re dead.””
My father smiled.
“I needed people to believe that.””
The hallway felt smaller.
“You let me bury an empty coffin?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at Claire.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Because everyone behaves differently when they think the powerful are gone.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You destroyed our lives.””
Richard tilted his head.
“No, Daniel. I protected our family.””
I laughed.
The sound came out broken.
“You locked my wife away.””
“She found something she shouldn’t have.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You mean I found what you did.””
Richard ignored her.
“Daniel, your mother always said you were too emotional.””
My jaw tightened.
“Don’t talk about her.””
“Still defending people without knowing the truth.””
He walked closer.
I immediately stepped between him and Lily.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
“You think I would hurt my granddaughter?””
“I don’t know what you would do anymore.””
That sentence seemed to hurt him.
Not because he cared.
Because he was not used to hearing it.
Richard looked around at the ruined engagement party.
“What a disaster.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You promised nobody would get hurt.””
His eyes moved toward her.
“You’re blaming me?””
“You said you would let her go.””
“And you believed me?””
Vanessa went silent.
My stomach turned.
Because suddenly I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t just a victim.
She had been involved.
She had made choices.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Richard smiled.
“You still think this is about you finding answers.””
“What else would it be about?””
He looked at Claire.
“It’s about your wife.””
Claire’s face tightened.
Richard stepped closer.
“She didn’t discover a crime.””
He lowered his voice.
“She discovered a betrayal.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, every phone in the hallway buzzed at once.
Guests looked down at their screens.
Confusion spread through the room.
Marcus stared at his phone.
“Daniel…”
I turned.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“Everyone just received a video.””
My father smiled.
“Good.””
I felt a chill.
“What did you send?””
May you like
Richard looked directly at me.
“The truth.””
