Chapter 8: The Last Secret Claire Kept
Nobody spoke after we read the final page.
The sentence remained between us.
A wound nobody wanted to touch.
The person who locked Claire away was not my father.
It was someone I loved.
My eyes moved slowly across the room.
Vanessa.
Claire.
Myself.
The possibilities were unbearable.
“Daniel,” Claire whispered.
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“You wrote it.””
“I know.””
“Then you knew.””
She shook her head.
“No. I knew something was wrong. But I didn’t know who.””
Richard laughed softly.
“That’s the problem with memories.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“They can betray you.””
I hated that he was right.
Because my entire life felt like a room full of locked doors.
And every key I found opened another nightmare.
Claire took the notebook.
“There are more pages missing.””
I looked.
She was right.
The middle section had been torn out.
“Who removed them?””
Richard smiled.
“Someone who wanted to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“You?””
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
The entire room went still.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“Richard.””
“You should tell him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You owe him the truth.””
I looked at her.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked like she was about to break.
“I removed the pages.””
The confession landed like a stone.
“Why?””
She looked at Claire.
“Because I was trying to stop him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why lie to me for two years?””
She had no answer.
That was the answer.
I walked away.
I couldn’t look at her.
The woman who cooked dinner with my daughter.
The woman who held me when I cried.
The woman who knew exactly what she had done.
“I loved you,” she whispered.
I stopped.
“I believe you.””
Her eyes filled.
“But love doesn’t erase what you did.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
Claire came beside me.
“She’s telling the truth about one thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Vanessa helped me escape.””
I looked surprised.
“She did?””
Claire nodded.
“The night you found me in the room wasn’t the first time that door opened.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?””
“She came to me months before.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I couldn’t live with it anymore.””
Claire continued.
“She told me she had made a mistake.””
Richard scoffed.
“A mistake?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You promised you would let her go.””
“And you believed me.””
Her expression broke.
“I was young.””
“You were weak.””
The words were cruel.
But Vanessa accepted them.
Because she knew they were partly true.
I looked at Richard.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
He didn’t pretend.
He didn’t hide.
“I spent years watching people blame each other. Watching them doubt themselves. Watching them destroy their own lives.””
He smiled.
“People are easy to control when they’re afraid.””
Then the estate alarm sounded.
Everyone turned.
A red light flashed near the entrance.
“What is happening?”” Marcus shouted from the ballroom.
Richard looked at his watch.
“Right on time.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you do?””
He ignored me.
Then every screen in the house turned on.
A live broadcast appeared.
A news reporter stood outside Hawthorne Estate.
“Breaking news. Authorities have arrived after evidence of financial crimes connected to the Hawthorne family was leaked online tonight.””
The room erupted.
“What?””
“Police?””
Richard smiled.
“The final stage.””
I stepped closer.
“What final stage?””
He looked at me.
“Making sure the world sees you exactly as I planned.””
The reporter continued.
“Sources indicate Daniel Hawthorne may be connected to the disappearance of his first wife, Claire Hawthorne, seven years ago.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Claire grabbed my hand.
“They’re blaming you.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“You framed me.””
“No.””
He looked almost offended.
“I revealed the truth.””
The screens changed.
A video appeared.
Me.
Standing outside Claire’s room.
Holding the key.
Again.
But this time there was audio.
My own voice.
“Claire, nobody will believe you.””
The room went silent.
Because the voice sounded like me.
Cold.
Angry.
The video ended.
And then the front doors opened.
Police officers entered.
One officer stepped forward.
“Daniel Hawthorne?””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
He pulled out a document.
“I’m placing you under arrest for the disappearance and suspected murder of Claire Hawthorne.””
Lily screamed.
“No!””
Everything happened at once.
Claire stepped between us.
“He didn’t do this!””
The officer looked at her.
“Ma’am, you’re the missing person.””
Richard stood behind everyone.
Watching.
Smiling.
As they put handcuffs around my wrists.
But before they dragged me away, Claire grabbed my hand.
And whispered something only I could hear.
“Remember the night you found me.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
May you like
Her eyes were full of fear.
“You weren’t the one holding the key.””
