Chapter 7: The Night I Lost Myself
The photograph stayed on my phone screen for less than ten seconds.
But those ten seconds were enough to destroy the last piece of certainty I had left.
I stared at the image.
Seven years ago.
The hallway beneath Hawthorne Estate.
The same hidden room.
The same oak door.
Me standing there with the brass key in my hand.
And behind me…
My father.
Alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
My stomach twisted.
“No,” I whispered.
Claire stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because my brain was fighting against itself.
I knew that hallway.
I knew that door.
I knew the key.
But I didn’t remember being there.
I turned the phone toward Claire.
Her face changed immediately.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Oh my God.””
“You’ve seen this?””
She looked at Richard.
My father’s expression hardened.
“Who sent that?””
I looked at him.
“You tell me.””
For the first time that night, Richard looked uncertain.
Just for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“That photo proves nothing.””
“It proves I was there.””
“Yes.””
The answer came too easily.
My chest tightened.
“You admit it?””
Richard walked closer.
“You were there.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because you came to confront your wife.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Richard glanced at her.
“You don’t know everything.””
“I know enough.””
“No, Claire. You know what you remember.””
The words made her freeze.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
Quietly.
“I think it means there are things all of us forgot.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“Not this.””
“Then what did you know?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I knew your father was changing your memories.””
The room went silent.
I felt anger rise again.
“How?””
She swallowed.
“Because he did it to me too.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa walked toward a chair and sat down.
The confident woman from the engagement party was gone.
The woman sitting there looked exhausted.
Broken.
“He didn’t just threaten people,” she said.
“He controlled them.””
I watched her carefully.
“How?””
“Drugs. Hypnosis. Psychological conditioning.””
I almost laughed.
It sounded impossible.
Like something from a movie.
But then I remembered the missing days.
The strange headaches.
The moments when I felt like I had woken up in the middle of my own life.
Claire touched my hand.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“You said I came here that night.””
She nodded.
“You did.””
“What happened?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You were angry.””
“Because I found out about your father?””
“Yes.””
“Did I hurt you?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“Claire.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me the truth.””
She closed her eyes.
“You were scared.””
I waited.
“You told me you didn’t know who to trust.””
My breathing slowed.
“What else?””
“You said you had found something.””
“What?””
Claire looked toward Richard.
“A recording.””
Richard’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“What recording?””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You know exactly what recording.””
I looked at my father.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard said nothing.
Claire continued.
“Your father recorded conversations with powerful people. He collected evidence against them. But one recording was different.””
“What was on it?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
Claire nodded.
“She discovered what Richard was doing before anyone else.””
I remembered my mother.
Her illness.
Her sudden decline.
The doctors saying stress had damaged her health.
The way my father never left her side.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“No.””
Claire’s expression told me she was thinking the same thing.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“I won’t believe that.””
Richard sighed.
“You always were sentimental.””
I looked at him.
“What happened to my mother?””
His eyes remained cold.
“She got sick.””
“Why?””
“She couldn’t handle the truth.””
Claire looked at him with disgust.
“You poisoned her.””
A gasp moved through the room.
Lily buried her face against me.
I felt something inside me break.
“You killed my mother?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was worse.
I grabbed his shirt.
“You killed my mother?””
Security rushed forward.
Claire grabbed me.
“Daniel!””
I released him.
My hands shook.
Richard adjusted his jacket.
“You see?””
He looked around.
“This is why I had to control you.””
I stared at him.
“You’re insane.””
“No.””
He looked at Lily.
“I’m practical.””
The moment his eyes moved toward my daughter, something inside me changed.
I stepped in front of her.
“You don’t look at her.””
Richard smiled faintly.
“There’s the son I remember.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you finally understand.””
He reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small black notebook.
Old.
Worn.
He threw it onto the table.
“This is yours.””
I stared at it.
“What?””
“Your journal.””
I shook my head.
“I never kept a journal.””
“Yes, you did.””
Claire picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She opened the first page.
And I saw my own handwriting.
The first line made my blood run cold.
*I don’t trust myself anymore.*
The next page was covered in writing.
Dates.
Names.
Memories.
Warnings.
And one sentence repeated over and over.
*If I forget, Claire knows the truth.*
I looked at Claire.
She was crying.
“You wrote this before they took your memories.””
I touched the page.
My handwriting.
My thoughts.
My fear.
My own voice from seven years ago.
Then I reached the final page.
Only one sentence was written there.
A sentence that made every person in the room go silent.
*The person who locked Claire away was not my father.*
I looked up.
Everyone stared at me.
May you like
The page continued.
*It was someone I loved.*
