Chapter 3: The Truth Under the House
Nobody spoke after the phone call.
The silence felt heavier than shouting.
I stared at the screen until it went dark.
Lily was still holding Claire’s hand.
Claire looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“You know who that was,” I said.
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She looked down.
“I think I do.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because she’s been manipulating you.””
Claire laughed quietly.
The sound was filled with pain.
“Manipulating him?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You disappeared.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Because you made me disappear.””
The guests had been moved into the ballroom by security, but several family members remained nearby.
Nobody wanted to leave.
Everyone wanted to know how the perfect engagement party had become a nightmare.
I closed the door behind us.
I needed answers.
“All of you are going to tell me everything.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around.
At the people watching.
At Claire.
At Lily.
Then she whispered:
“Not here.””
I almost smiled.
The same words.
Again.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to choose where the truth happens anymore.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you from your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father was not the man you thought he was.””
Claire looked at me sadly.
“I tried to tell you.””
I remembered the years before Claire disappeared.
The arguments she had with my father.
The nights she told me something felt wrong.
The way I always defended him.
“He built this estate,” Vanessa said.
“He built everything.””
I looked around.
The Hawthorne Estate.
My family’s symbol.
Our legacy.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa looked toward the hidden room.
“He found out Claire discovered something.””
“What?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire spoke.
“I found financial records.””
My forehead tightened.
“What kind of records?””
“Money transfers.””
“To who?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“To people who made problems disappear.””
A chill moved through me.
“You’re saying my father was involved in crimes?””
Claire nodded.
“He was powerful. He had connections. When I threatened to expose him, he decided I was the problem.””
“And Vanessa?””
Claire’s face softened.
“That’s the part I never understood.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was young.””
I stared at her.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I knew your father was dangerous.””
“Then why stay?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was scared.””
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked human.
Not the perfect woman from the ballroom.
Just someone carrying a terrible secret.
“I thought if I stayed close to your family, I could keep myself safe.””
I shook my head.
“And then you fell in love with me?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Because I believed her.
That was the worst part.
Claire picked up one of the letters.
“Daniel, there’s more.””
She handed it to me.
The paper was old.
My hands trembled as I read.
Daniel,
If Vanessa tells you she saved me, don’t believe her.
If she tells you she had no choice, don’t believe her.
She helped him.
But she also tried to stop him.
I looked up.
“Claire…”
She looked away.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””
Neither did I.
A sound came from beneath us.
A low mechanical noise.
Everyone stopped.
The floor vibrated slightly.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He knows.””
Before I could ask what she meant, the lights went out.
The hallway disappeared into darkness.
Lily screamed.
I grabbed her immediately.
“Everyone stay together.””
Then came another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Coming from somewhere inside the walls.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was shaking.
“We have to leave.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the floor.
“Because there is another room under this one.””
A door hidden beneath the carpet suddenly clicked.
Everyone froze.
The carpet shifted.
A square outline appeared.
A trapdoor.
And from beneath it, a man’s voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
A voice I had not heard in five years.
My dead father’s voice.
“Daniel.””
My blood turned cold.
“Come downstairs.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Claire stepped backward.
And Lily whispered the words that made my entire world collapse.
“Daddy…”
May you like
She pointed at the trapdoor.
“Grandpa isn’t dead.””
