Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Wall

The voice came from the darkness beyond the closing vault door.

“You finally found me.””

Elena spun around.

Raffaello grabbed her arm.

“Stay behind me.””

Isabella stumbled backward.

“Who is that?””

No one answered.

The steel door stopped halfway.

A hand appeared in the narrow opening.

An elderly man stepped through.

His hair was almost completely white.

His face was thin.

His eyes were hard.

And Elena knew him.

Not from the photographs.

Not from stories.

From somewhere deeper.

A childhood memory.

A man's hand resting on her forehead while she slept.

A voice singing softly in the dark.

A smell of cedar and expensive cologne.

She whispered the word before she even understood it.

“Grandpa.””

The old man smiled.

“Yes.””

Raffaello's father stepped backward.

“This is impossible.””

The old man looked at him.

“It's been a long time, Vittorio.””

Raffaello stared.

“My grandfather died twenty-five years ago.””

“No,” the old man said.

“He disappeared twenty-five years ago.””

Elena couldn't move.

“You’re my grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

His expression softened.

“Because I needed you to survive.””

Elena shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

“You hid me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe my whole family was dead.””

“Yes.””

She took a step toward him.

“You watched me grow up from somewhere?””

He looked down.

“From a distance.””

Her voice broke.

“Why didn't you come to me?””

“Because every person I loved became a weapon against me.””

Raffaello stepped forward.

“You used my father.””

The old man turned.

“I used everyone.””

“That doesn't make it right.””

“No.””

His answer came without hesitation.

“That is why I have spent twenty-five years waiting to confess.””

Isabella moved closer to Elena.

“You knew about us.””

“I knew from the beginning.””

“And you allowed Marco to hunt us?””

“I allowed him to believe he was hunting shadows.””

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“You call that protecting us?””

The old man looked at her.

“I call it the only chance I had.””

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Dust shook loose from the ceiling.

Everyone looked toward the stairs.

Raffaello pulled out his weapon.

“Marco is inside.””

“No,” the old man said.

“Then who?””

He looked at Elena.

“The person who betrayed us.””

Elena's heart hammered.

“Who?””

The old man reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folded document.

“I was going to tell you after the trust opened.””

He handed it to her.

Elena unfolded it.

The paper was a legal agreement.

At the bottom were several signatures.

Her grandfather.

Her father.

Raffaello's father.

Maria.

And one more.

She knew it instantly.

Her stomach dropped.

“No.””

Raffaello leaned over her shoulder.

His face went pale.

The final signature belonged to—

Maria.

Elena looked toward her sister.

“Mom betrayed them?””

The old man shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why did she sign?””

“Because she was forced.””

“By Marco?””

“Not Marco.””

The old man paused.

“By your father.””

Elena froze.

“My father?””

“He believed killing one daughter would save the other.””

Isabella recoiled.

“What?””

The old man looked at her.

“Your father chose you.””

Isabella's face drained of color.

“He gave Marco information about Alessandra.””

Elena stared.

“My father betrayed me?””

“He believed Marco would kill you.””

“Then why didn't he?””

“Because Maria changed the plan.””

Elena’s hands trembled.

The pieces began moving into place.

The blonde woman.

The restaurant.

The fake deaths.

The plane crash.

The trust.

The hidden daughter.

But one question remained.

“What happened the night Raffaello disappeared?””

The old man looked at Raffaello.

His expression became grim.

“I ordered the plane to go down.””

Raffaello stared.

“So it was you.””

“Yes.””

“You nearly killed me.””

“I made sure you survived.””

“You don't get to decide that.””

“I know.””

Raffaello took another step.

“You destroyed eleven months of my daughter's life.””

“I know.””

“You made Elena think I abandoned her.””

“I know.””

Raffaello's voice became quieter.

“Then why?””

The old man closed his eyes.

“Because Marco had placed a bomb on your original aircraft.””

Silence.

Raffaello stopped.

“What?””

“I discovered it six hours before departure.””

“Then why not tell me?””

“Because Marco was watching you.””

The old man looked at Elena.

“He needed to believe you were dead.””

Raffaello's face tightened.

“So you switched the flight plan.””

“Yes.””

“And told nobody.””

“Yes.””

“You could have told Elena.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she would have come looking for you.””

Elena felt tears rise.

“And you knew I would.””

Her grandfather nodded.

“You have always been stubborn.””

Despite everything, a broken laugh escaped her.

Then the ceiling shook again.

This time the lights flickered.

The old man looked toward the stairs.

“We have minutes.””

“Until what?”” Elena asked.

“Until Marco reaches the vault.””

Isabella looked at the documents.

“How do we stop him?””

The old man turned toward the back wall.

“The trust isn't the treasure.””

He pressed his palm against a stone panel.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small black box.

Elena stared.

“What is that?””

“The ledger.””

Raffaello stepped closer.

“That's what Marco wants.””

“No.””

The old man looked at Elena.

“That's what Marco fears.””

He opened the box.

Inside was a drive.

And a handwritten list of names.

Elena picked it up.

There were hundreds.

People who had taken money.

People who had ordered killings.

People who had covered up disappearances.

At the bottom was a list of current officials and business leaders.

Names still powerful.

Still alive.

She looked at her grandfather.

“What were you planning to do with this?””

“Release it.””

“When?””

“Midnight.””

Elena looked at the clock.

11:54.

Six minutes.

“Then why hasn't it been released?””

“Because the trust requires your authorization.””

She stared.

“My authorization?””

“Yes.””

The old man handed her a small device.

“One signature.””

“What happens afterward?””

“Everything goes public.””

Raffaello looked at her.

“They'll come after you.””

“I know.””

Isabella took her hand.

“So will they come after me.””

Elena looked at her.

“We're done running.””

Isabella nodded.

“For once.””

A gunshot sounded upstairs.

Then another.

Raffaello raised his weapon.

“They're here.””

The vault door began to shake.

Marco's voice echoed through the steel.

“Alessandra!””

Elena's jaw tightened.

“I'm here.””

“Open the door.””

“No.””

“You have four minutes.””

“Go to hell.””

Marco laughed.

“I've wanted to hear you say that.””

Raffaello looked at Elena.

“Do it.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“Release the ledger.””

Elena hesitated.

“They'll destroy our family.””

“Your family has already been destroyed.””

He looked at Sofia, who was standing beside Isabella.

“Now we're trying to save what's left.””

Elena plugged the drive into the device.

A screen appeared.

*AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*

She entered her real name.

*ALESSANDRA VALENTINA DE LUCA.*

The screen changed.

*SECOND HEIR REQUIRED.*

Isabella stepped forward.

“I’m ready.””

She entered her name.

*ISABELLA MARIA DE LUCA.*

A final message appeared.

*ONCE ACTIVATED, THE ARCHIVE CANNOT BE STOPPED.*

Elena looked at Isabella.

“Do we do this?””

Isabella nodded.

“Together.””

Elena pressed *RELEASE*.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then the screen flashed:

*ARCHIVE TRANSMISSION INITIATED.*

Somewhere outside, phones began ringing.

One after another.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

Raffaello looked at his phone.

Messages flooded the screen.

News alerts.

Emergency calls.

Breaking headlines.

The files were spreading.

Marco's voice outside the vault became furious.

“What did you do?””

Elena smiled for the first time since this nightmare began.

“We ended your game.””

The vault doors suddenly exploded inward.

Marco stood beyond the smoke.

Several armed men surrounded him.

But he wasn't looking at Elena.

He was staring at the old man.

At his own father.

Marco's face changed.

“You.””

The old man stepped forward.

“You lost.””

Marco raised his weapon.

Raffaello moved.

So did Isabella.

But Elena saw something else.

A woman standing behind Marco.

The blonde woman.

She lowered her weapon.

And looked directly at Elena.

Then she whispered:

“I was never working for Marco.””

Elena stared.

The woman slowly turned her gun toward Marco.

“I've been protecting your sister for twenty-eight years.””

Marco turned in disbelief.

“You?””

The blonde woman smiled sadly.

“And now I'm done protecting you.””

She pulled the trigger.

The shot thundered through the vault.

Marco dropped.

Silence followed.

Elena stared at the woman.

“Why?””

The blonde woman lowered her weapon.

“Because your mother once saved my life.””

She looked at Elena's pendant.

“And because she asked me to keep one promise.””

“What promise?””

The woman's eyes filled with tears.

“Make sure both daughters live long enough to know the truth.””

Elena looked at the clock.

11:59.

One minute remained.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“You think it's over.””

Elena went still.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered:

“The man your grandfather thought he buried.””

The call ended.

Her grandfather stared at her.

Raffaello looked toward the vault door.

And Elena realized the ledger hadn't ended the conspiracy.

It had only exposed the first layer.

May you like

Because someone much more powerful than Marco was still alive.

And he already knew exactly where she was.
