Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden in Her Name
The sound of the gunshot echoed through the empty street.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
Then Raffaello reacted.
He grabbed Elena and pulled her down.
“Get away from the window!””
The glass behind them cracked.
Sofia screamed.
“Mommy!””
Elena crawled across the floor toward her daughter.
“I’m here! I’m here, sweetheart!””
The stranger in the dark coat drew his weapon and rushed toward the entrance.
“Stay inside!””
Raffaello ignored him.
He looked through the shattered glass.
The old woman was lying on the pavement.
“Mother!””
Elena’s voice broke.
She pushed herself up.
Raffaello caught her.
“No.””
“That’s my mother.””
“It could be a trap.””
“She’s hurt!””
“Elena, listen to me.””
His voice softened.
“Your daughter needs you alive.””
Those words stopped her.
Because Sofia was crying.
And Elena knew she could not fall apart.
Not now.
Raffaello looked at the stranger.
“Call an ambulance.””
“Already done.””
“Find where the shot came from.””
The man nodded and ran outside.
Elena held Sofia tightly.
“Don’t look, baby.””
“But Grandma…”
“I know.””
Sofia buried her face into Elena’s shoulder.
“I just got my daddy back. I don’t want to lose anyone else.””
Elena closed her eyes.
That sentence hurt more than the gunshot.
Across the room, Raffaello stood completely still.
He had heard it too.
And for the first time since he returned, Elena saw something in his expression.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For them.
Minutes later, paramedics rushed through the entrance.
The old woman was alive.
Barely.
They lifted her onto a stretcher.
Elena followed.
The paramedic stopped her.
“Are you family?””
Elena nodded quickly.
“Yes.””
The woman looked at Raffaello.
“And him?””
Elena hesitated.
A thousand emotions crossed her face.
Then she answered quietly.
“My husband.””
Raffaello looked at her.
Not because of the word.
Because of the way she said it.
Like she was trying to remember what it felt like.
The paramedic nodded.
“She’s lost blood, but the wound missed anything vital.””
Elena exhaled.
“Can I go with her?””
“Only one person.””
Raffaello stepped forward.
“I’ll go.””
Elena immediately shook her head.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I need to know she’s safe.””
“She’s my mother.””
“And you’re my wife.””
The words hung between them.
Elena looked away.
Before she could answer, the old woman suddenly reached out from the stretcher.
Her fingers grabbed Elena’s wrist.
“Elena…”
“I’m here.””
Her mother’s eyes opened slightly.
“There’s no time.””
“Don’t talk.””
“You have to listen.””
The paramedics tried to move her.
But the old woman held on.
“Your father…”
Elena leaned closer.
“What about him?””
“He didn’t die.””
Her heart stopped.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her mother’s breathing became weaker.
“He is the reason everything happened.””
Elena froze.
“What does that mean?””
Her mother looked at Raffaello.
Fear filled her eyes.
“He knows.””
Raffaello stepped closer.
“Knows what?””
The old woman looked at Elena.
“Your real name.””
Elena frowned.
“What?””
Her mother squeezed her hand.
“Your name was never Elena Rossi.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“What are you saying?””
The paramedics pulled the stretcher away.
“Ma’am, we need to go.””
“No!””
Elena followed.
“Mom!””
The ambulance doors closed.
Elena stood frozen on the sidewalk.
Raffaello came beside her.
Neither spoke.
The stranger returned.
“The shooter escaped.””
Raffaello’s face darkened.
“Of course he did.””
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
The stranger held out a small object.
A bullet casing.
But attached to it was a tiny piece of paper.
Elena took it.
Her hands shook.
There were only three words.
*Stop searching, Elena.*
She stared.
Raffaello looked over her shoulder.
“They know your name.””
She whispered.
“They always have.””
The drive to the hospital was silent.
Sofia slept in the back seat, exhausted from everything she had seen.
Elena sat beside the window.
Raffaello drove.
For the first time in years, they were together in the same car.
But it felt nothing like before.
There was too much between them.
Too many unanswered questions.
Finally, Elena spoke.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were alive?””
Raffaello kept his eyes on the road.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Every day.””
She looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“When I woke up, I couldn’t remember everything.””
She said nothing.
“I remembered your face.””
His voice became quieter.
“I remembered Sofia.””
A tear slipped down Elena’s cheek.
“But not my name?””
“No.””
“Not our home?””
“No.””
“Not me?””
He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“I remembered enough to know I was missing something.””
Elena looked away.
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
The car stopped at a red light.
Raffaello turned toward her.
“I was told you died.””
Elena slowly looked back.
“What?””
“After the crash, someone showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“A death report.””
Her face went pale.
“My death report?””
“Yes.””
The light changed.
He drove forward.
“I spent months believing I had lost you.””
Elena stared.
“Then how did you find me?””
“Because of Sofia.””
“What?””
“Her medical records.””
Elena became still.
“What about them?””
“I found a file.””
“What file?””
“One that should not have existed.””
Raffaello glanced at her.
“Someone had been tracking Sofia since birth.””
A cold feeling moved through her.
“Tracking?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why come to me?””
“Because the file had one note.””
“What note?””
Raffaello’s voice lowered.
“It said: ‘The daughter survived. The mother must remain hidden.’”
Elena felt sick.
“Remain hidden from who?””
Raffaello didn't answer.
She looked at him.
“Raffaello.””
“I don’t know.””
The hospital appeared ahead.
But before they reached it, Raffaello’s phone buzzed.
He glanced down.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed the phone to Elena.
There was a message.
From an unknown number.
Attached was a photograph.
Elena opened it.
Her hands went numb.
It was a picture of her and Sofia.
Taken outside the restaurant.
Taken that same day.
Below the image were words.
*You should have stayed invisible.*
Elena looked at Raffaello.
“They were watching us.””
“Yes.””
“Before you arrived.””
“Yes.””
“Then you didn’t find me by accident.””
“No.””
The answer terrified her.
“Then why?””
Raffaello looked at her.
“Because someone wanted me to find you.””
The hospital doors opened.
They rushed inside.
A nurse approached immediately.
“Are you here for Maria Rossi?””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
The nurse’s expression changed.
“She woke up.””
Elena exhaled.
“Can I see her?””
The nurse hesitated.
“Only for a moment.””
“Why?””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“Because she asked for you.””
“That’s good.””
“No.””
The nurse lowered her voice.
“She also asked for a lawyer.””
Elena frowned.
“A lawyer?””
“And she said something else.””
“What?””
The nurse looked at Raffaello.
“She said…”
The woman swallowed.
“She said, ‘Do not let Raffaello hear the truth about what happened the night Elena was born.’”
Raffaello went completely still.
Elena looked at him.
“What night I was born?””
Neither of them noticed the man standing at the end of the hallway.
The man from the old photograph.
Her father.
He watched them silently.
Then he turned away.
And whispered into his phone:
“She knows everything now.””
A voice answered.
“Then eliminate the problem.””
The man looked back at Elena.
And smiled.
“Not yet.””
He ended the call.

His daughter was finally close enough to destroy him.
