Chapter 6: The Name on the Hidden Account
Darkness swallowed the room.
Sofia screamed.
“Mommy!””
Elena reached for her daughter, but a hand caught hers first.
Raffaello.
“I've got you,” he whispered.
Something crashed in the hallway.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Fast.
The emergency lights flickered on, bathing the room in a dull red glow.
The doctor was gone.
Elena stared at the empty doorway.
“He disappeared.””
Raffaello immediately checked the hall.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
He turned.
“I’m not leaving you alone.””
“I’m coming with you.””
“Elena—”
“My mother is in this hospital, my daughter is being hunted, and someone just called me by a name I've never used.””
She tightened her grip on the envelope.
“I’m done hiding.””
Raffaello studied her face.
Then nodded.
“Stay beside me.””
He moved into the hallway with Elena and Sofia close behind.
The stranger in the dark coat appeared from the stairwell.
“Where is the doctor?””
“Gone,” Raffaello said.
The stranger cursed.
“He wasn't on the hospital roster.””
“I know.””
“Then we have a problem.””
Raffaello looked toward the security cameras.
“Find every exit.””
“I've already locked them down.””
“Good.””
The stranger looked at Elena.
“He called you Alessandra.””
“Yes.””
“That's your real name?””
“I think so.””
He glanced at the envelope.
“Then we need to know why.””
Elena looked through the glass panel in her mother’s room.
Maria was still lying in bed.
Her eyes were open.
She had heard everything.
Elena entered again.
“Mom.””
Maria looked at her daughter.
“He knows.””
“Who?””
“Your father.””
Elena held up the paper.
“This is my birth certificate.””
Maria nodded.
“He kept the original.””
“Why?””
“Because it proves your identity.””
Raffaello stepped inside.
“And it proves the inheritance.””
Maria looked at him.
“You found that too?””
“Yes.””
“Then you already know what comes next.””
Elena frowned.
“What inheritance?””
Maria took a slow breath.
“When your grandfather died, he left everything to you.””
Elena stared.
“My grandfather?””
“The De Luca family fortune.””
Raffaello’s eyes narrowed.
“My father told me the De Lucas had lost everything.””
“He lied.””
“How much?””
Maria gave a bitter smile.
“Enough to make powerful men kill for it.””
Elena sat beside the bed.
“But if the money belonged to me, why have I never seen it?””
“Because it was placed in a trust.””
“Where?””
Maria looked toward Raffaello.
“Your father knows.””
He went still.
“My father?””
“He helped create the trust.””
Raffaello shook his head.
“My father died six years ago.””
“Did he?””
The question landed like a slap.
Elena looked at Maria.
“You're saying he's alive too?””
Maria's face softened.
“No. But he left instructions.””
She pointed weakly toward Elena's pendant.
“That's the key.””
Elena touched the silver pendant.
“This?””
“Open it.””
She frowned.
“It doesn't open.””
Maria nodded.
“Turn the back.””
Elena did.
A tiny seam became visible.
Raffaello stepped closer.
“There.””
He took the pendant gently.
Using the edge of his wedding ring, he pressed into the seam.
The pendant clicked.
The back opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Elena stared.
“How long has that been there?””
Maria smiled sadly.
“Since the day you were born.””
Raffaello looked at the stranger.
“Get a laptop.””
The stranger pulled one from his bag.
“Here.””
Raffaello inserted the card.
A single encrypted folder appeared.
Name:
*A.V.D.L.*
Elena whispered.
“Alessandra Valentina De Luca.””
The stranger frowned.
“It's encrypted.””
Raffaello typed several commands.
Nothing.
“Password required.””
Maria closed her eyes.
“I know the password.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What is it?”” Elena asked.
Maria looked directly at her daughter.
“The first thing you ever said.””
Elena blinked.
“I was a baby.””
“Exactly.””
“What was it?””
Maria smiled.
“Your first word wasn't ‘Mama.’”
Elena almost laughed despite everything.
“What was it?””
Maria whispered:
“Blue.””
Raffaello entered it.
The folder opened.
There were hundreds of files.
Bank statements.
Property deeds.
Legal documents.
Photographs.
And one video.
Elena stared at the screen.
“Play it.””
Raffaello clicked.
A man appeared.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Sharp-eyed.
Elena had never seen him in person.
But she knew immediately.
Her father.
He sat behind a desk.
“If you're watching this,” he said, “then my daughter has discovered the truth.””
Elena stopped breathing.
Her father looked straight into the camera.
“I know you were told I died.””
He smiled faintly.
“That was necessary.””
Elena's hands clenched.
Raffaello stood behind her.
The video continued.
“Alessandra, you were hidden because the people closest to me wanted the inheritance before you were old enough to claim it.””
The image changed.
A document appeared on screen.
“The De Luca trust becomes yours on your twenty-eighth birthday.””
Elena's eyes widened.
“When is that?”” she whispered.
Raffaello looked at her.
“Today.””
Silence.
The exact day she had turned twenty-eight.
The day she had been washing pans in a restaurant kitchen.
The day her husband had returned.
The day her mother had been found.
It couldn't be coincidence.
Her father's voice continued.
“You will receive control of the trust only if you are alive.””
Elena swallowed.
“And there is one person who has spent twenty-eight years trying to make sure you aren't.””
A photograph appeared.
The blonde woman.
Elena froze.
Then another photograph.
The restaurant manager.
Then another.
A man Elena recognized from childhood.
Her uncle.
Her father's younger brother.
Raffaello leaned closer.
“That's Marco De Luca.””
Elena looked at him.
“You know him?””
“He was your father's business partner.””
“He’s my uncle.””
Raffaello nodded.
“He was also the last person seen with my father before your family disappeared.””
The video continued.
“My brother Marco believed the inheritance should belong to him.””
Elena's father looked directly into the camera.
“He murdered people for it.””
Elena covered her mouth.
“He killed…”
“Everyone who stood between him and the trust.””
The screen changed again.
A list of names appeared.
Some were crossed out.
Some had dates.
One name made Elena freeze.
*Raffaello Vitale.*
Beside it:
*Status — presumed dead.*
Raffaello stared.
“That list was made before my crash.””
Maria whispered:
“Yes.””
Elena looked at him.
“So your plane crash wasn't an accident.””
“No.””
Raffaello's voice had gone cold.
“They were trying to kill me.””
Her father's recording continued.
“But Marco could not access the De Luca trust without Alessandra.””
Elena's father paused.
“So he needed to find her.””
The screen went black for two seconds.
Then a second video began.
Maria appeared.
Years younger.
She was holding a baby.
Elena.
Maria looked terrified.
Behind the camera, someone spoke.
“Take the child and leave.””
Maria shook her head.
“I won't abandon her.””
The voice became harsher.
“If she stays, she'll die.””
Maria hugged the baby.
“What about you?””
“I'll make them believe we're dead.””
The video ended.
Elena cried silently.
Her mother had sacrificed her entire life to hide her.
But one question remained.
“Mom.””
Maria looked at her.
“Why didn't you ever tell me?””
“Because knowing the truth would have put a target on your back.””
“You mean more of one.””
Maria nodded.
“I was wrong.””
Elena took her hand.
“For the first time.””
Maria squeezed her fingers.
A noise came from the hallway.
A door creaked.
Raffaello immediately stood.
“Everyone stay inside.””
The stranger moved toward the entrance.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Alessandra.””
Elena went cold.
Raffaello stepped in front of her.
The voice came again.
“You've had enough time to learn who you are.””
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Deliberate.
The stranger raised his weapon.
Raffaello whispered to Elena.
“Don't move.””
A man stepped into the red emergency light.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Calm expression.
Elena knew the face instantly from the video.
Her uncle.
Marco De Luca.
He smiled at her.
“Hello, Alessandra.””
Elena couldn't speak.
Marco looked at Raffaello.
“I expected you to be dead.””
Raffaello stared back.
“You're the reason I almost was.””
Marco shrugged.
“Business is sometimes unpleasant.””
Maria suddenly cried out from the bed.
“Marco!””
He turned toward her.
“You're still alive?””
Maria pushed herself up.
“You failed.””
Marco smiled.
“No, sister.””
He looked at Elena.
“You failed.””
Elena stepped forward.
“What do you want?””
Marco's smile widened.
“Everything that belongs to your family.””
“You mean my inheritance.””
“Yes.””
“And if I refuse?””
Marco glanced toward Sofia.
His expression changed.
“Then your daughter becomes the leverage your mother should have feared.””
Raffaello moved instantly.
But Marco raised one hand.
Three armed men stepped into the hallway behind him.
Marco looked calmly at Elena.
“You have until midnight to sign the trust over.””
He smiled.
May you like
“Or Sofia disappears.””
And then the hospital doors slammed shut behind him.
