Chapter 7: Midnight Has One Price
Elena heard the hospital doors lock behind Marco.
The metallic click seemed impossibly loud.
Raffaello moved in front of Sofia.
“Stay with me.””
Sofia's small hands grabbed the back of his jacket.
“Daddy, I'm scared.””
“I know.””
He crouched and looked into her eyes.
“But you're not going anywhere.””
Marco watched from the hallway.
“You still think this is something you can fight.””
Raffaello stood.
“I know exactly what I'm fighting.””
Marco smiled.
“Do you?””
He glanced at Elena.
“She has no idea what her family built.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Then tell me.””
Marco raised an eyebrow.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
“Your grandfather wasn't a businessman.””
Elena's expression hardened.
“What was he?””
“A king.””
Raffaello scoffed.
“Don't romanticize it.””
Marco's eyes shifted toward him.
“You wouldn't.””
Elena ignored them.
“What did my grandfather control?””
“Shipping companies. Construction. Hotels.
Banks. Political connections.””
Marco paused.
“And things that never appeared on paper.””
Elena felt a chill.
“What things?””
“Your family moved money for people who wanted their money moved.””
“You mean criminals.””
Marco smiled.
“Sometimes.””
Raffaello's voice turned cold.
“And you were responsible for the dirty work.””
Marco shrugged.
“I was responsible for keeping the family alive.””
“You murdered people.””
Marco looked amused.
“That's what your father told you?””
“No.””
Raffaello stepped closer.
“I found your name in the crash investigation.””
Marco's smile faded.
“What investigation?””
“The one your people tried to erase.””
For the first time, Marco looked genuinely angry.
“You should have stayed dead.””
Raffaello didn't blink.
“So should you.””
The three armed men behind Marco raised their weapons.
Elena grabbed Sofia.
“Don't.””
Raffaello raised one hand.
“Everyone stays calm.””
Marco laughed quietly.
“Still playing the hero.””
“No.””
Raffaello looked at Elena.
“I'm playing the husband.””
Elena met his eyes.
Something changed between them.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
Something stronger.
A decision.
Whatever happened next, they would face it together.
Marco looked at the clock on the wall.
11:13 p.m.
“You have forty-seven minutes.””
“To do what?””
“To sign.””
“I'll never sign.””
Marco sighed.
“I expected that.””
He snapped his fingers.
One of the men stepped forward.
Elena's stomach dropped.
The man held up a phone.
On the screen was Sofia walking into the restaurant earlier that evening.
Then another video.
Sofia leaving school.
Then another.
Sofia sleeping.
Elena's face went white.
“You've been following her.””
“For years.””
“Why?””
“Because you were always the real target.””
Elena's hands trembled.
Marco moved closer.
“You thought your mother hid you because she loved you.””
“She did.””
“She hid you because your existence threatened everyone.””
“Threatened your greed.””
Marco smiled.
“You finally understand.””
Raffaello stepped between them.
“Leave her alone.””
Marco looked at him.
“You are forgetting something.””
“What?””
“I know what happened to you.””
Raffaello's expression tightened.
Marco continued.
“I know you survived the plane crash.””
“You arranged it.””
“I gave an order.””
Elena looked at him.
“You tried to kill my husband.””
Marco nodded.
“Yes.””
Raffaello's jaw clenched.
“Why?””
“Because you married her.””
Elena froze.
Marco continued.
“The Vitale family was supposed to help me locate Alessandra. Instead, your father hid information from me.””
Raffaello stared.
“My father knew she was alive?””
“He knew before you did.””
Elena looked at Raffaello.
“Your father knew?””
“Yes.””
Raffaello's voice was barely audible.
“My father knew Elena was alive.””
Marco corrected him.
“Alessandra.””
Elena ignored the name.
“And he kept me hidden too?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he made a deal with your grandfather.””
“What deal?””
Marco smiled.
“He agreed to protect you.””
Raffaello looked furious.
“And you?””
“I disagreed.””
“Obviously.””
Marco checked his watch.
11:21.
“You have thirty-nine minutes.””
Elena looked at the hospital room.
Her mother was watching silently.
“Mom.””
Maria shook her head.
“Don't sign.””
Marco smiled.
“You hear that?””
He looked at Elena.
“She would rather let your daughter disappear.””
Maria's face hardened.
“Don't you dare.””
“Why not?””
“You're a coward.””
Marco laughed.
“You've always thought that.””
“I know you.””
Maria's eyes never left him.
“And I know what you're really afraid of.””
Marco's smile vanished.
“What?””
“That she will open the trust.””
Elena looked between them.
Marco said nothing.
Maria continued.
“The money isn't all that's inside.””
Raffaello frowned.
“What is she talking about?””
Marco stepped toward the bed.
“Enough.””
Maria smiled weakly.
“Tell them.””
He stared at her.
“You don't know what's in there.””
“I know.””
“You don't.””
“The trust contains the account ledger.””
Marco's expression changed.
Elena noticed.
“What ledger?””
Maria looked at her.
“The ledger that proves everything.””
Marco's men exchanged nervous glances.
Raffaello stepped toward him.
“Everything?””
“Every payment. Every name. Every person your family bought.””
Marco said nothing.
Maria continued.
“Judges.””
“Politicians.””
“Police officers.””
“Companies.””
“Murders.””
Elena felt sick.
“And my grandfather kept all of it?””
“He trusted nobody.””
Maria looked at Marco.
“Not even his own son.””
Marco's eyes burned.
“You were always jealous.””
“No.””
Maria's voice was quiet.
“I was always afraid of you.””
The lights flickered again.
Then every monitor in the hallway went dark.
One of Marco's men looked toward him.
“Sir?””
Marco turned.
“What happened?””
The hospital emergency system suddenly activated.
Doors unlocked.
Then locked again.
Then unlocked.
Someone had breached the hospital network.
Raffaello looked at the stranger in the dark coat.
“You?””
The man shook his head.
“Not me.””
A voice crackled through a nearby speaker.
“Raffaello.””
Everyone froze.
He recognized it.
His own father's voice.
Raffaello stepped toward the intercom.
“Dad?””
The speaker hissed.
Then the voice came again.
“If Elena is alive, you must take her to the old Vitale estate.””
Raffaello looked stunned.
Marco went pale.
Maria closed her eyes.
“What is that?””
Raffaello stared at the speaker.
“My father.””
Marco suddenly shouted:
“Shut it down!””
One of the armed men rushed toward the control panel.
Raffaello tackled him.
The hallway erupted.
A gunshot struck the ceiling.
Sofia screamed.
Elena pulled her behind the bed.
“Don't move!””
Another shot shattered a light.
The emergency system went completely dark.
In the confusion, the stranger attacked one of Marco's men.
Raffaello disarmed another.
Marco ran.
Elena saw him disappear through the stairwell.
“Raffaello!””
He looked toward her.
“Take Sofia and go!””
“What about you?””
“I’ll get Marco.””
“No.””
She grabbed his hand.
“We stay together.””
For a second he stared at her.
Then nodded.
“Together.””
They ran into the stairwell.
Behind them, Maria cried out.
“ELENA!””
Elena stopped.
She turned back.
Her mother had pulled herself halfway upright.
“Your father didn't die!””
“I know!””
“No!””
Maria's voice shook.
“You don't understand.””
She held up a trembling finger toward Raffaello.
“His father didn't die either.””
Raffaello froze.
“My father?””
Maria nodded.
“He's been alive.””
Elena stared at her.
“How?””
Maria looked toward the stairwell.
“He's the one who has been protecting you.””
Raffaello shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“He arranged your plane crash.””
Elena stared.
“What?””
Maria continued.
“Not to kill you.””
Raffaello couldn't speak.
“He knew Marco was coming for you,” Maria said.
“He needed the world to believe you were gone.””
Raffaello stepped back.
“My father caused the crash?””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Maria looked at Elena.
“Because he needed Marco to believe Raffaello died before he could reveal where Alessandra was.””
Elena's mind raced.
The crash.
The disappearance.
The fake deaths.
The hidden trust.
The pendant.
None of it had been random.
They had all been pieces of one enormous plan.
Then Sofia screamed.
“Mommy!””
Elena spun.
One of Marco's men had reached them.
He grabbed Sofia.
“No!””
Elena lunged.
Raffaello slammed into the man.
Sofia fell free.
Elena caught her.
The man stumbled backward, but instead of running, he smiled.
“He said you'd do that.””
Raffaello pinned him against the wall.
“Who?””
The man laughed.
“Marco.””
Raffaello tightened his grip.
“Where is he?””
The man smiled through blood on his lip.
“He's not the one you should be chasing.””
“Who is?””
The man looked directly at Elena.
“Your father.””
Raffaello released him.
Elena's heart stopped.
At the end of the stairwell stood an older man.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
The same face from the photograph.
Her father.
He looked at Elena.
Then at Sofia.
Then at Raffaello.
And said quietly:
“I'm sorry, Alessandra.””
Elena couldn't move.
Her father took one step closer.
“I wasn't supposed to come back until you were ready.””
She stared at him.
“You've been alive all these years.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had to.””
“You let Mom suffer.””
“I protected her.””
“You let Raffaello think he lost us.””
Her father's face tightened.
“That was the price.””
Elena felt anger rise through every part of her.
“What did you do?””
He looked at Raffaello.
“Everything I could to keep Marco from finding my daughter.””
Then he looked back at Elena.
“But tonight, the protection ends.””
“Why?””
He glanced at the clock.
11:37.
“Because in twenty-three minutes, the trust opens.””
Elena swallowed.
“And then?””
Her father’s eyes filled with something she had never seen in them.
Fear.
“Then every secret your family buried will become public.””
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a key.
And held it toward her.
“But there is one final secret.””
Elena stared at the key.
“What secret?””
May you like
Her father whispered:
“You were never my only daughter.””
