Chapter 8: The Sister Behind the Wall
Elena stared at the key in her father’s hand.
Then at his face.
Then back at the key.
“You have another daughter?””
Her father said nothing.
Raffaello stepped forward.
“Who?””
The older man looked at him.
“Her name is Isabella.””
Elena felt the hallway tilt beneath her.
“Where is she?””
“Alive.””
“Where?””
Her father hesitated.
“Elena—”
“Don’t call me that.””
The words came out sharper than she intended.
“If you’re going to keep talking to me, tell me the truth.””
Her father lowered his eyes.
“She has been hidden since the night you were born.””
“Why?””
“Because Marco discovered there were two heirs.””
Elena stared.
“Two?””
“Yes.””
“Me and Isabella.””
“Exactly.””
Raffaello looked toward the hospital doors.
“And Marco knew?””
“He suspected.””
Her father closed his hand around the key.
“That's why you had to disappear.””
Elena stepped closer.
“You mean I wasn't hidden to protect me.””
“You were hidden to protect both of you.””
“Then why did everyone think I was an only child?””
“Because one daughter was easier to erase than two.””
Elena felt something twist inside her chest.
“Where is Isabella?””
Her father looked at the clock.
11:42.
“We don't have time.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because Marco is already moving.””
“He's been moving my entire life!””
Her father's face tightened.
“And now he's coming for Sofia.””
At the mention of her daughter, Elena’s anger sharpened.
“Take me to Isabella.””
Her father nodded.
“Then come.””
Raffaello immediately followed.
The stranger looked at Elena.
“I'll stay with your mother.””
Elena nodded.
“Make sure nobody gets near her.””
He looked at Raffaello.
“Bring her back.””
Raffaello answered without hesitation.
“I will.””
They rushed down the stairwell.
Outside, a black sedan waited.
Elena climbed into the back with Sofia.
Raffaello sat beside her.
Her father took the driver's seat.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
The city blurred beyond the windows.
Sofia leaned against Elena.
“Mommy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Do I have an aunt?””
Elena looked at her father.
“Yes.””
Sofia smiled faintly.
“What's her name?””
“Isabella.””
“Is she nice?””
Elena couldn't help smiling through her fear.
“I hope so.””
Her father kept driving.
After several minutes, Elena spoke.
“You owe me the whole story.””
“I know.””
“No more pieces.””
“I understand.””
“Start with the night I was born.””
Her father took a slow breath.
“Your grandfather discovered that Marco had been stealing from the family trust.””
“How much?””
“Enough to destroy the family.””
“So he confronted him?””
“He did more than that. He decided to remove Marco completely.””
Raffaello frowned.
“Why didn't he go to the authorities?””
“Because the family had enemies everywhere.””
Elena looked out the window.
“So what happened?””
“Your mother gave birth to twins.””
Elena glanced at Sofia.
“Twins.””
“Yes.””
“Isabella was born first.””
“And me?””
“You were born six minutes later.””
Elena closed her eyes.
Six minutes.
A lifetime divided by six minutes.
Her father continued.
“Your grandfather intended to put both of you into the same trust.””
“But Marco found out.””
“He found out that only one legal heir could control the trust after twenty-eight.””
Elena turned.
“Why?””
“The trust required a single successor.””
“Then why not choose Isabella?””
“Because Marco knew where she was.””
Elena stared.
Her father continued.
“You were taken from the hospital before anyone could register you.””
“Who took me?””
“Your mother.””
Elena blinked.
“She kidnapped her own daughter?””
“She saved your life.””
“How?””
“Marco had men inside the hospital.””
Raffaello’s expression hardened.
“He was already hunting them.””
“Yes.””
Her father glanced into the rearview mirror.
“He wanted both babies dead.””
Sofia looked frightened.
Elena pulled her closer.
“Then how did Isabella survive?””
“She was hidden.””
“By whom?””
“A woman Marco trusted.””
Elena frowned.
“Why would someone working for Marco protect his niece?””
“Because she had a conscience.””
“Who?””
Her father didn't answer immediately.
Then:
“The blonde woman.””
Elena went still.
“The woman from the restaurant?””
“Yes.””
Raffaello turned.
“She protected Isabella?””
“She smuggled her out of the hospital.””
Elena struggled to process it.
“But she was cruel to me.””
“She believed you were Elena Rossi.””
“What?””
“She didn't know your true identity at first.””
“Then why did she recognize me?””
“Because she eventually discovered who you were.””
Raffaello's face darkened.
“And she chose to torment her anyway.””
Her father nodded.
“She thought humiliation would force you to reveal the trust.””
Elena looked down at her scarred hands.
“So every terrible thing she did…”
“She was trying to provoke you.””
Elena whispered:
“She underestimated me.””
“Yes.””
The car slowed.
They turned onto a narrow road surrounded by trees.
A large iron gate appeared ahead.
Elena recognized it.
“Vitale estate.””
Raffaello looked at his father-in-law.
“You said my father arranged this?””
“He did.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Marco would eventually find the De Luca trust.””
“And he knew Elena was the key.””
“Yes.””
Raffaello stared at the road ahead.
“I spent eleven months thinking my father abandoned me.””
“He didn't.””
“Then where is he?””
Her father was silent.
Elena noticed.
“Where is Raffaello’s father?””
The older man finally answered.
“He's inside.””
Raffaello stiffened.
“Inside where?””
“The estate.””
The gate opened.
A second car pulled out.
Raffaello's father stood beside it.
Older than Elena remembered from old photographs.
Alive.
Real.
Raffaello jumped from the car before it fully stopped.
“Dad.””
The older man looked at his son.
“I’m sorry.””
Raffaello walked toward him.
“You caused the crash.””
“Yes.””
“You made everyone believe I was dead.””
“Yes.””
“You stole eleven months from my wife and daughter.””
His father lowered his head.
“I know.””
Raffaello’s voice broke.
“You don't get to say you're sorry.””
His father nodded.
“No.””
Elena stepped out of the car.
“Why?””
Raffaello's father looked at her.
“Because Marco had agents inside your family and mine.””
“You could have told us.””
“If I had, Marco would have known you were alive.””
“And if the plane hadn't crashed?””
“Marco would have killed you before sunrise.””
Elena stared.
She didn't know whether to hate him or thank him.
Maybe both.
Then the front door of the estate opened.
A young woman stepped outside.
Dark hair.
Pale skin.
Gray sweater.
She stopped when she saw Elena.
For several seconds, neither moved.
The woman whispered:
“Alessandra?””
Elena's breath caught.
“Yes.””
The woman looked at her own hands.
“Then…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You're my sister.””
Sofia peeked around Elena.
The woman smiled through her tears.
“And you're my niece.””
Sofia stepped forward.
“Are you Aunt Isabella?””
Isabella laughed softly.
“Yes.””
She crouched.
Sofia ran to her.
Elena watched the embrace.
Something inside her broke open.
For the first time, her family wasn't a story told through graves and lies.
It was standing in front of her.
Alive.
Complete.
Or almost complete.
Isabella stood.
“There isn't much time.””
Elena frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Isabella looked toward the house.
“Marco knows I'm here.””
Raffaello's father swore under his breath.
“How?””
Isabella looked at Elena.
“Because someone betrayed us.””
“Who?””
Isabella's face became serious.
“The person who gave Marco the location of this estate.””
Everyone turned.
The lights inside the house suddenly went out.
A red laser dot appeared on the front door.
Then another.
Then another.
Raffaello grabbed Sofia.
“Everyone inside!””
Gunfire erupted across the driveway.
Glass shattered.
Elena ducked behind the car.
Her father drew a weapon.
Raffaello pulled Elena down beside him.
“Stay low!””
Isabella shouted:
“The vault!””
Elena looked at her.
“What vault?””
“The trust isn't in a bank!””
Another bullet struck the car.
Isabella pointed toward the house.
“Your grandfather hid everything beneath this estate.””
Raffaello looked at Elena.
“We need to get inside.””
They ran.
Her father covered them as they crossed the stone courtyard.
Inside, Isabella slammed the doors.
Raffaello locked them.
The gunfire continued outside.
Elena stared at her sister.
“How do we open the vault?””
Isabella pulled a small silver key from around her neck.
Elena looked at the key in her father's hand.
Then at hers.
“They match.””
Isabella nodded.
“Two keys.””
“Two daughters.””
“Exactly.””
They ran to the basement.
At the far wall stood a massive steel door.
Two keyholes.
One on each side.
Elena inserted her key.
Isabella inserted hers.
They turned simultaneously.
The door groaned open.
Inside was a room filled with documents, hard drives, gold certificates, passports—
and dozens of photographs.
Elena walked toward the center.
One photograph caught her attention.
It showed her mother.
Her father.
Raffaello’s father.
And the blonde woman.
All together.
But standing behind them was another man.
Elena lifted the photograph.
“Who is this?””
Her father went pale.
Raffaello stepped closer.
“Dad?””
Raffaello’s father shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
“What?””
He looked at the photograph.
“That man died twenty-five years ago.””
Elena turned the picture over.
There was writing on the back.
Her grandfather's handwriting.
*If both girls ever find this room, the truth can no longer be hidden.*
Below it was one final sentence.
*The man who betrayed us is still alive.*
Elena looked up.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Isabella's phone rang.
She checked the screen.
Her face turned white.
“It's Marco.””
She answered.
A calm voice came through the speaker.
“You found the vault.””
Elena stepped closer.
“Where are you?””
Marco laughed.
“Exactly where I've needed to be for twenty-eight years.””
Elena's blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father isn't the man who betrayed the family.””
“Then who?””
A pause.
Then Marco said:
“Ask your husband.””
Elena turned toward Raffaello.
He looked stunned.
Marco continued.
“Ask Raffaello why he never told you what happened the night your father disappeared.””
The call ended.
Raffaello stared at Elena.
“I swear I didn't know.””
Before she could respond, Isabella screamed.
The vault doors began closing by themselves.
May you like
And from somewhere inside the darkness behind them came a man's voice.
“You finally found me.””
