Chapter 1: The Kitchen Door

“Move faster, Maid. I said faster!””

The words cracked through the restaurant kitchen like a whip.

Elena froze for half a second, her wet hands hovering over a mountain of greasy pans.

Then she looked down at them again.

“Yes, ma’am,” she whispered.

She grabbed another pan.

Behind her, six-year-old Sofia stood near the kitchen doorway, clutching a tiny pink backpack against her chest. Her cheeks were pale. Her dark curls had fallen loose from the ribbon Elena had tied that morning.

“Mommy,” Sofia said softly, “please don’t let her yell at you.””

The blonde woman turned sharply.

“What did you say?””

Sofia stepped backward.

Elena immediately moved between them.

“She’s only asking me to hurry,” Elena said.

“Please don’t speak to her that way.””

The woman laughed.

“You’re in no position to tell me how to speak.””

She wore a cream designer dress, a gold watch, and a diamond bracelet that flashed every time she pointed a manicured finger.

Then she looked directly at Sofia.

“Your daddy is a nobody who left you with nothing,” the woman said coldly.

“So don’t act like you’re some little princess.””

Sofia’s lower lip trembled.

Elena’s hands tightened around the edge of the sink.

“You know nothing about my family or my life.””

The blonde woman raised an eyebrow.

“Really? Then enlighten me.””

Elena said nothing.

Because how could she explain a marriage that had collapsed into silence?

How could she explain that the man Sofia called Daddy had disappeared from their daily lives nearly a year ago?

How could she explain the promises he had once made?

Or the reason she had never told Sofia the full story?

The blonde woman stepped closer.

“You came here asking for work, remember? You said you could do anything.””

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

Elena lowered her eyes and scrubbed harder.

The steel pan squeaked beneath the sponge.

Hot water splashed over her wrists.

The kitchen smelled of oil, garlic, detergent, and burned meat.

Sofia watched from the doorway, her little fingers wrapped around the straps of her backpack.

“Mommy, are you okay?””

Elena forced a smile.

“I’m fine, sweetheart.””

“You're bleeding.””

Elena glanced down.

A tiny red line had opened across one finger.

“It’s nothing.””

The blonde woman rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please. We don’t have time for theatrics.””

Elena stared at the pan.

Three months earlier, she had never imagined she would be standing in the back of an expensive restaurant wearing a faded gray uniform and scrubbing dishes until her knuckles cracked.

But rent was due.

Sofia needed school shoes.

The electricity bill had been sitting on the counter for eight days.

And pride did not feed a child.

So Elena kept working.

Until the kitchen door suddenly slammed open.

Everyone turned.

The restaurant manager rushed inside, his face strangely pale.

“Stop shouting,” he said.

The blonde woman frowned.

“What?””

The manager swallowed.

“The owner just arrived.””

Silence fell across the kitchen.

The blonde woman immediately straightened her dress.

“The owner?””

“Yes.””

The manager looked toward the swinging doors.

“He came back early.””

A murmur moved through the kitchen staff.

Elena stopped scrubbing.

For some reason, her heart began beating faster.

The manager glanced nervously at the blonde woman.

“Please just keep things professional.””

She smoothed her hair.

“Of course.””

Then the kitchen doors opened again.

A man walked inside.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a black suit that looked completely out of place among the stainless-steel counters and steaming sinks.

His face was hard.

His dark hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had come straight from an airport or a business meeting.

But none of that was what made Elena drop the pan in her hand.

It was his eyes.

She knew those eyes.

She had spent years waking up beside them.

Years falling asleep beneath the weight of their silence.

Years loving the man behind them.

Raffaello.

Her husband.

The pan hit the floor with a deafening clang.

Sofia gasped.

“Daddy?””

Raffaello stopped.

Every sound in the kitchen seemed to disappear.

His gaze moved from Sofia to Elena.

For several seconds, he did not breathe.

Neither did she.

Then his expression changed.

Shock became disbelief.

Disbelief became fury.

He took one step forward.

“Elena?””

She backed away instinctively.

“Raffaello…”

His eyes dropped to the uniform.

Then to her red, swollen hands.

Then to the floor covered in greasy water.

Finally, he looked at Sofia.

His daughter ran toward him.

“Daddy!””

Raffaello dropped to his knees.

Sofia threw her arms around his neck.

“You found us!””

His hands immediately wrapped around her.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.””

Elena closed her eyes.

The sound of her daughter crying into his shoulder nearly broke something inside her.

Raffaello stood slowly, still holding Sofia.

His gaze returned to Elena.

“What are you doing here?””

Elena swallowed.

“Working.””

“Working?””

The word came out dangerously quiet.

Before she could answer, the blonde woman stepped forward.

“Raffaello, I can explain.””

He looked at her.

She smiled nervously.

“She misunderstood the whole situation.””

Elena stared at the blonde woman.

“Misunderstood?””

The woman quickly continued.

“She’s new. She’s emotional. She got upset because I was trying to teach her how things are done.””

Raffaello’s jaw tightened.

“Teach her?””

“Yes.””

He glanced at Elena's hands.

The red cuts.

The soaked sleeves.

The cheap rubber gloves hanging from one wrist.

“By making my wife scrub dishes?””

The blonde woman's face drained of color.

“She… she is your wife?””

The manager suddenly looked like he wanted the floor to open beneath him.

“Raffaello, wait—”

Raffaello turned toward him.

“How long has my wife been scrubbing pans in this kitchen?””

The manager opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“How long?””

“Sir, we had no idea who she was.””

“You didn't need to know.””

Raffaello's voice was colder now.

“She was a human being before she was my wife.””

The kitchen fell silent again.

Elena stared at him.

That was the first time he had ever defended her in front of anyone.

The blonde woman stepped backward.

“Raffaello, please. I didn't know.””

He looked at her.

“You called my daughter’s mother a maid.””

“I was frustrated.””

“You humiliated her.””

“I said I was sorry.””

“You threatened her.””

“I never—”

“I heard you.””

The blonde woman stopped.

Raffaello handed Sofia gently to Elena.

His daughter immediately wrapped both arms around her mother's waist.

Then he faced the manager.

“You are all fired.””

The manager blinked.

“Sir?””

“Effective immediately.””

“Please, sir, this is a misunderstanding.””

Raffaello pointed toward the blonde woman.

“Her.””

Then toward the manager.

“You.””

Then he looked around the entire kitchen.

“Everyone who stood here and watched.””

Nobody moved.

Raffaello's voice dropped.

“You saw a woman being humiliated in front of her child, and nobody stopped it.””

Elena stared at him.

A thousand questions collided inside her.

Why was he here?

Why had he been looking for them?

Why had he disappeared?

And most importantly—

Why had he suddenly come back?

Raffaello looked at her.

His anger disappeared for one brief second.

What replaced it was something she couldn't understand.

Pain.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “there is something you don't know.””

Her heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked toward the manager.

Then toward the blonde woman.

Then back at Elena.

“I didn't leave you.””

Sofia lifted her head.

Elena's face went white.

Raffaello took one step toward his wife.

“I was told that you…”

He stopped.

His phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

The name on it made his entire expression change.

Elena saw it.

May you like

And for the first time, she realized the secret separating them was much bigger than a broken marriage.

The call was from the one person she had believed was dead.
