Chapter 7: The Phone Call From Ethan

The name on Mrs. Evelyn’s phone changed everything.

Ethan.

Adrian’s brother.

The man Clara had warned him about.

The man whose name was written in Clara’s handwriting.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The phone continued vibrating in Mrs. Evelyn’s hand.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound felt louder than the storm outside.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Answer it.””

Mrs. Evelyn looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“But I need to know why he’s calling.””

She swallowed and pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Everyone listened.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice came through the speaker.

“Evelyn.””

Adrian’s face changed.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it his entire life.

The voice of his brother.

“Where is Adrian?””

Mrs. Evelyn looked at him.

“He’s here.””

A pause.

Then Ethan spoke again.

“I know.””

The room went still.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Ethan.””

The line became silent.

Then:

“Adrian.””

No surprise.

No confusion.

Just his name.

As if Ethan already knew this moment would happen.

“What do you want?”” Adrian asked.

Another pause.

“I want you to listen before you make a mistake.””

Adrian laughed softly.

A bitter sound.

“A mistake?””

He looked at the teddy bear.

“At this point, I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

Ethan’s voice became lower.

“Where did you find it?””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“The teddy bear?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

Ethan knew.

“How long have you known about it?”” Adrian asked.

“I didn’t.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

Adrian grabbed the phone from Mrs. Evelyn.

“Clara recorded a message.””

The silence on the other end lasted too long.

Then Ethan sighed.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

His voice cracked with anger.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re worried about me.””

“I am worried about you.””

“You knew.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“You knew Clara was investigating you.””

Another pause.

Then Ethan said:

“Yes.””

The confession shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For two years, he had imagined every possible explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Someone framing Ethan.

But he never imagined hearing his brother admit it.

“Why?””

The word came out quietly.

“Why would you do this?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Because Clara was looking at things she didn’t understand.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“She was putting herself in danger.””

“She was trying to protect us.””

“She was destroying everything.””

The same words Vanessa had almost said earlier.

Adrian felt sick.

“Are you with Vanessa?””

The line went silent.

That silence was different.

Not hesitation.

Recognition.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Answer me.””

Ethan finally spoke.

“Vanessa made mistakes.””

Adrian froze.

Made mistakes.

Not denied.

Not impossible.

Mistakes.

“You’re protecting her.””

“No.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Ethan sighed.

“I can’t explain this over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because someone is listening.””

Everyone looked around.

The storage unit suddenly felt colder.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Get Lily somewhere safe.””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“What?””

“Adrian, listen to me.””

The urgency in Ethan’s voice was real.

“Do not take Lily back to the mansion.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Ethan said:

“Because the person who tried to kill Clara knows you found the recordings.””

The words hit like a weapon.

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately covered the phone.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay anymore.

He returned the phone to his ear.

“Who tried to kill Clara?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

The call suddenly became distorted.

Then Ethan’s voice returned.

“Adrian, I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

The line went dead.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

“He’s manipulating you.””

Adrian slowly turned.

“You knew he was involved.””

“No.””

“You knew his name.””

“I knew Ethan worked with Clara.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked away.

Because she had no answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You need to understand something.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

“Ethan isn’t the only one hiding things.””

His eyes moved toward Mrs. Evelyn.

The older woman looked down.

Adrian noticed.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

“Mrs. Evelyn.””

She looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

His chest tightened.

“For what?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because Clara asked me to tell you something.””

Adrian went still.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

“And you didn’t?””

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“But every time I came close, something happened.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“She threatened me.””

The room froze.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Mrs. Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was stronger now.

“You told me if I spoke, Lily would lose another person she loved.””

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Adrian…”

“Is it true?””

She didn’t answer.

And again, silence became the truth.

Adrian felt something inside him break.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

The person he married.

The person he trusted with his daughter.

The person he believed was helping him heal.

Had been controlling the story from the beginning.

“Tell me everything,” Adrian said.

Mrs. Evelyn nodded.

“Clara discovered Vanessa was meeting Ethan.””

Adrian looked at her.

“But Ethan said he wasn’t alone.””

Mrs. Evelyn nodded slowly.

“There was someone else.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Her hands trembled.

“Someone inside your company.””

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Mrs. Evelyn looked at him.

“It does if that person had access to everything.””

Adrian felt a headache forming.

“How many people knew?””

Mrs. Evelyn hesitated.

“About what?””

“The recordings.””

Her eyes moved toward Teddy.

“Only Clara.””

“And?””

She looked at Lily.

“Only Lily.””

Adrian stared.

Then he understood.

The child everyone thought was too young to understand anything…

Was the only person who had been carrying the truth all along.

Lily hugged Teddy.

“Mommy trusted me.””

Adrian knelt beside her.

“She did.””

“Because I didn’t tell.””

His heart broke.

“You were never supposed to carry this alone.””

Lily looked at him.

“I was scared.””

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“I know.””

For the first time that night, Lily cried like a child.

Not like someone protecting a secret.

Not like someone trying to be brave.

Just a little girl who missed her mother.

While Adrian held her, Daniel walked toward the entrance.

“We need to leave.””

Adrian looked up.

“Why?””

Daniel pointed outside.

A car had stopped near the storage building.

The headlights cut through the rain.

Nobody had heard it arrive.

Daniel’s face changed.

“That’s not good.””

Adrian stood.

“Who is it?””

Daniel looked through the window.

Then whispered:

“The person who sent the message.””

Everyone froze.

The car door opened.

A figure stepped out.

Holding something in their hand.

Not a weapon.

A folder.

The person walked toward the building.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like they belonged there.

Then the door handle moved.

Adrian stepped in front of Lily.

The door opened.

And the person standing there was someone nobody expected.

Someone Adrian trusted.

Someone who had been beside him since the beginning.

The person looked at Adrian and said:

“You were never supposed to find Clara’s second recording.””

Adrian stared.

Because the person standing in front of him was not Ethan.

It was someone much closer.

It was his father’s old business partner.

The man who had helped Adrian build his empire.

May you like

The man who had always called him family.

Marcus Vale.
