Chapter 5: The Name Written in Clara’s Handwriting
Adrian stared at the piece of paper.
Three words.
Three words that made the entire room feel different.
He knew Clara’s handwriting better than anyone.
He knew the way she crossed her letters.
The slight curve at the end of her sentences.
The small pressure marks left behind when she was writing something important.
This was hers.
There was no doubt.
But the name written on that paper was impossible.
Because Clara had written the name of the one person Adrian never imagined could betray him.
His own brother.
Ethan.
The paper trembled slightly between Adrian’s fingers.
“No…”
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Daniel watched his face carefully.
“What does it say?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Adrian?””
He folded the paper immediately.
Nobody noticed except Vanessa.
And the moment she saw his reaction, something changed in her expression.
She knew.
Or at least, she suspected.
“Who is it?”” she asked.
Adrian looked at her.
The question sounded innocent.
But after everything he had learned, he wasn’t sure he believed anything from her anymore.
“Why do you care?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Because Clara’s dead, and you’re standing here accusing everyone around you.””
“I didn’t accuse anyone.””
“You’re looking at me like I’m a criminal.””
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You knew about the camera.””
Silence.
Vanessa looked away.
That silence was becoming her answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You need to hear everything Clara found.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew about Ethan?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
“I knew she suspected someone close to you.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“I didn’t know the name.””
Adrian studied him.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Clara kept certain things from me because she was afraid information could be used against her.””
“Why would she trust you then?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I was the only person who helped her after everyone else ignored her.””
The words hit Adrian.
Everyone else.
He thought about the weeks before Clara’s death.
The nights she sat silently at the dinner table.
The times she picked up her phone and quickly put it away.
The moments she looked like she wanted to say something but stopped.
He had been there.
But he hadn’t seen her.
“Show me everything,” Adrian said.
Daniel nodded.
“There’s a place Clara kept copies of evidence.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“What place?””
Everyone turned toward her.
She froze.
Adrian noticed.
“You seem very interested.””
“I’m just asking.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You’re worried.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“I’m worried because you’re listening to strangers who broke into our home.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Your home?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“Because Clara used to say the same thing.””
Adrian looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Before she died, Clara told me something.””
“What?””
“She said Vanessa had started acting like she already owned everything.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Daniel continued.
“She said Vanessa stopped asking permission.””
Adrian looked down.
Because he remembered something.
A small detail he had ignored.
After Clara died, Vanessa started changing things around the house.
The furniture.
The staff schedules.
Even Lily’s room.
At the time, he thought it was Vanessa trying to create a new beginning.
Now…
He wasn’t sure.
“Where is the evidence?”” Adrian asked.
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a key.
“Clara rented a storage unit outside the city.””
Vanessa immediately stepped back.
Adrian saw it.
“You know about it.””
“No.””
“You reacted.””
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
She shook her head.
“Adrian, you’re searching for reasons to hate me.””
The words would have hurt him before.
Now they only confused him.
Because part of him wanted to believe her.
Part of him wanted all of this to be a misunderstanding.
Because accepting the truth meant admitting something terrifying.
That for two years, he had protected the wrong person.
“Take us there,” Adrian told Daniel.
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Is she coming?””
Adrian looked at his daughter.
The little girl was holding Teddy tightly.
She looked scared.
But she nodded.
“I want to know what Mommy found.””
Adrian knelt down.
“Are you sure?””
Lily nodded.
“Mommy wanted me to know.””
His heart broke.
Because Lily had been carrying this alone.
A five-year-old child.
Carrying a secret her mother trusted her to protect.
An hour later, Adrian’s car stopped outside an old storage facility on the edge of town.
The rain had started falling.
Heavy drops hit the windshield.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Not even Vanessa.
Especially Vanessa.
Adrian watched her through the rearview mirror.
She looked nervous.
Not sad.
Not confused.
Nervous.
The difference mattered.
They entered the building.
Daniel led them through a hallway filled with old storage doors.
Finally, he stopped.
Unit 314.
Adrian looked at the number.
“Why here?””
Daniel inserted the key.
“Because Clara said this was the only place nobody connected to you knew about.””
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
But it was filled with boxes.
Hundreds of documents.
Old photographs.
Hard drives.
Notebooks.
Clara’s investigation.
Adrian stepped inside slowly.
It felt like entering a part of his wife’s life he had never known existed.
On one table was a photograph of Clara and Lily.
Taken just days before her death.
Lily immediately ran toward it.
“Mommy.””
She touched the picture.
Adrian watched.
Then he saw something beside it.
A notebook.
The cover had his name written on it.
For Adrian.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The first page contained a message.
My love,
If you’re reading this, I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you myself.
Adrian swallowed.
The next line made his eyes burn.
I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me.
He turned the page.
There were dates.
Names.
Details.
And one sentence underlined three times.
Ethan has been working with Vanessa from the beginning.
Adrian closed the notebook.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew Ethan was involved?””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“No, I didn’t.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was soft.
Almost broken.
“You see?””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You finally understand.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“That Clara was paranoid.””
The room went silent.
“You’re still doing this?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Doing what?””
“Blaming Clara.””
“I’m not blaming her.””
“You just called her paranoid.””
“Because she was.””
The words were cold.
Too cold.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You really don’t know when to stop, do you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You think you’re protecting him?””
“No.””
Daniel pointed at the notebook.
“She was protecting him.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“She was destroying everything.””
Adrian froze.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa realized too late.
She had revealed something.
A truth she never intended to say.
“I mean…”
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What did you mean?””
Vanessa looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She said nothing.
Adrian opened another folder.
Inside were emails.
One caught his attention.
An email sent from Ethan’s account.
To Vanessa.
The subject line:
The Clara Problem.
Adrian felt sick.
He opened it.
The message was short.
Make sure the girl stays quiet.
His eyes moved to the next line.
And make sure Adrian never finds the second recording.
Adrian stopped.
Second recording.
He looked at the teddy bear in Lily’s arms.
Then at Vanessa.
“What second recording?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“Mommy made another one.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian knelt.
“Lily?””
The little girl looked scared.
“She told Teddy.””
“Teddy?””
“She said if the first one was found…”
Lily hugged the bear tighter.
“…the second one would show who really hurt her.””
Adrian felt a cold wave move through him.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The camera was never the final secret.
It was only the beginning.
Clara had left a trail.
A trail leading to the truth.
And someone had spent two years trying to erase it.
Then Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, he turned the screen around.
A message appeared.
From an unknown number.
Everyone watched as Daniel opened it.
There was only one sentence.
May you like
Stop looking for Clara’s second recording.
Or Lily won’t get a chance to see tomorrow.
