Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Clara’s Secret
The name hung in the air like a threat.
Daniel.
Adrian watched Vanessa’s face carefully.
He didn’t need an explanation.
Not yet.
Her reaction had already answered one question.
She knew him.
The security alarm continued echoing through the mansion.
Red lights flashed across the walls.
Lily covered her ears.
“Daddy…”
Adrian immediately turned toward her.
“It’s okay.””
But his voice lacked confidence.
Because for the first time in years, he realized his daughter might have been living in a house full of secrets.
A house where the people who were supposed to protect her might have been hiding the truth.
“Who is Daniel?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
Her eyes moved between Adrian and the front door.
“He shouldn’t be here.””
That was not an answer.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You said you could explain.””
“I can.””
“Then start now.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Mrs. Evelyn looked at her with disappointment.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa finally whispered:
“He used to work for Adrian.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Used to?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“He was part of the finance department.””
The room became colder.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The missing documents.
The strange transactions.
The financial problems inside Adrian’s company.
And Clara’s warning.
“There are financial records connected to someone I never expected.””
Adrian looked toward the front entrance.
“Let him in.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She quickly softened her voice.
“Adrian, if he’s here, it’s because he wants something.””
“And you know that how?””
Silence.
Again.
That silence was becoming more revealing than words.
Adrian walked toward the security panel.
“Open the gate.””
The security guard hesitated.
“Sir?””
“Open it.””
A few seconds later, the alarm stopped.
The mansion became quiet.
Too quiet.
Then footsteps approached.
The front doors opened.
A man in his late thirties entered.
He looked exhausted.
His clothes were wrinkled.
His face carried the kind of tiredness that came from someone who had been running from something for a long time.
His eyes immediately found Adrian.
Then Lily.
Then the teddy bear.
His expression changed.
“You found it.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Who are you?””
The man swallowed.
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel looked at her.
And smiled sadly.
“That’s exactly what she said Clara would tell you.””
Adrian froze.
The room went silent.
“You knew Clara?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel looked at the teddy bear.
“Because I was helping her uncover the truth.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Adrian, this man is dangerous.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Dangerous?””
He looked around the mansion.
“At least I’m not the person who spent two years pretending to be someone’s friend.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Adrian stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
He pointed toward Daniel.
“You have five minutes to explain why my dead wife hid a camera inside my daughter’s teddy bear.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s fair.””
He looked at Lily.
Then lowered his voice.
“But before I explain, I need to know something.””
“What?””
“Has Vanessa ever tried to take that bear before tonight?””
Adrian looked at Lily.
The little girl hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Lily?””
The child looked down.
“Sometimes.””
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“When?””
Lily held the teddy bear closer.
“When Daddy was at work.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Lily flinched.
Adrian noticed.
“Let her speak.””
The little girl looked at her father.
“She said Mommy’s things made me sad.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like he had expected it.
“But she didn’t throw Teddy away,” Adrian said.
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
She whispered:
“She tried to open him.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“You opened the bear?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I was cleaning.””
“Cleaning?””
“Yes.””
“By cutting the stitches?””
She said nothing.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“She was looking for the camera.””
The room froze.
Adrian looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Clara told me.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
His hands were shaking.
“Six weeks before Clara died, she contacted me.””
“Why?””
“Because she discovered money was being moved from your company accounts.””
Adrian frowned.
“By Daniel?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“By someone using Daniel’s access.””
The words landed heavily.
“You’re saying someone framed you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was the easiest person to blame.””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Vanessa immediately moved.
“Don’t.””
Everyone noticed.
Daniel slowly pulled out a folder.
“Documents Clara gave me.””
Adrian took them.
Inside were printed emails, transaction records, and photographs.
His hands became tighter with every page.
There were payments.
Large payments.
Sent from company accounts.
To a private account.
The name on the account was not Vanessa.
It was someone else.
Someone Adrian didn’t recognize.
“Who is this?”” he asked.
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s the person Vanessa was working with.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian looked up.
“You know this person?””
“No.””
But her answer came too fast.
Daniel watched her carefully.
“You should tell him.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Shut up.””
Adrian heard it.
Not a denial.
A warning.
“Tell me what?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel stood.
“Clara found out Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.””
Adrian felt the room spin slightly.
“She had help.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked at Lily.
“I don’t know if she should hear this.””
Adrian moved closer to his daughter.
“She stays.””
Lily looked up at him.
He squeezed her hand.
“She deserves the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“Clara believed someone close to you was involved.””
Adrian frowned.
“Someone close to me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
But before he could speak, Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
Adrian noticed.
“What are you doing?””
She stopped.
“I need to leave.””
“No.””
Her face changed.
“Adrian.””
“You’re not leaving.””
She stared at him.
“You think I’m guilty?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And that was worse.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“After everything?””
Adrian looked at the teddy bear.
At the video.
At Clara’s final warning.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
That sentence hurt her more than anger would have.
Because it meant she had lost something.
His trust.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
“Clara didn’t only leave the camera.””
He reached into his pocket.
“She left me a message.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
The mansion went silent.
“What message?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I was supposed to deliver it to you if anything happened.””
Adrian’s heart started racing.
“Why didn’t you?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Of becoming the next person who disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stared at the phone.
“Play it.””
Daniel unlocked the screen.
A voice recording appeared.
Created one day before Clara’s accident.
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Clara’s voice appeared.
“Daniel, if Adrian is listening to this…”
A pause.
Her voice trembled.
“Tell him I’m sorry.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Clara continued.
“I tried to protect him.””
Another pause.
“But I was too late.””
The recording became louder.
“Adrian, if you’re hearing this, don’t trust the person who tells you I was confused.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Don’t trust the person who tells you I was paranoid.””
Adrian looked at her.
Clara’s voice broke slightly.
“Because the person who hurt me…”
The recording suddenly cut.
Static.
Then silence.
Everyone waited.
Daniel checked the phone.
“What happened?””
The file ended.
Adrian stared.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s all I have.””
Vanessa slowly breathed again.
Almost relieved.
But Adrian noticed something.
The recording had not ended naturally.
It had been interrupted.
Someone had stopped it.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Where is the original recording?””
Daniel looked confused.
“That was the original.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
He stared at the phone.
“Someone cut the rest.””
A cold silence followed.
Because everyone understood.
Clara’s final message wasn’t incomplete.
Someone made it incomplete.
And whoever did it…
Was still inside the mansion.
Then Lily suddenly looked toward the teddy bear.
Her eyes widened.
“Daddy.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
The little girl pointed at the bear.
“There’s another thing inside.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Lily touched the bear’s stitched stomach.
“Mommy said Teddy had two secrets.””
Adrian stared at his daughter.
“Two?””
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered:
“But she said the second secret was only for when I was old enough.””
A strange feeling moved through Adrian.
Because Clara had prepared for the possibility that she might not be there.
She had hidden evidence.
She had hidden warnings.
And she had hidden one final secret.
A secret inside the bear.
A secret Vanessa had been trying to find for two years.
Adrian slowly picked up Teddy.
And for the first time, he noticed something beneath the camera compartment.
A tiny folded piece of paper.
Hidden deeper inside.
He pulled it out.
The handwriting was Clara’s.
Only three words were written.
Adrian’s face went pale.
Because the message wasn’t a warning.
It was a name.
A name he never expected to see.
May you like
The name of the person who had been helping Vanessa.
The name of someone Adrian trusted completely.
