Chapter 6: The Second Recording
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The message on Daniel’s phone remained glowing in the dark storage room.
Stop looking for Clara’s second recording.
Or Lily won’t get a chance to see tomorrow.
Adrian read it again.
And again.
Each time, the meaning became more terrifying.
This was no longer about secrets.
No longer about money.
No longer about proving who had lied.
Someone had threatened his daughter.
“Give me the phone.””
Daniel handed it over immediately.
Adrian studied the number.
Unknown.
No contact.
No history.
Nothing.
“Can you trace it?”” he asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not from this.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You work in finance, not security.””
Daniel nodded.
“But Clara taught me enough.””
“Enough for what?””
“To know when someone is trying to scare you.””
Adrian looked around the storage unit.
The boxes.
The documents.
The evidence Clara had spent months collecting.
“She knew this could happen.””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew someone would try to stop you from finding the truth.””
Vanessa stood near the doorway.
Her arms wrapped around herself.
“I don’t understand why you’re still listening to him.””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Adrian.
“You’re letting this stranger manipulate you.””
Adrian’s expression remained cold.
“A stranger who knows about Clara’s investigation.””
“He could have found all this online.””
Daniel laughed.
A humorless sound.
“Online?””
He pointed toward the shelves.
“Do you know how many people tried to find what Clara found?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Everyone thought she was just grieving.””
Adrian stared at her.
“Who thought that?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
And that was enough.
Because suddenly Adrian remembered something else.
After Clara died, the doctors had mentioned stress.
The police had mentioned emotional exhaustion.
Even some friends had quietly suggested Clara had been overwhelmed.
Everyone had repeated the same story.
Clara was struggling.
Clara was tired.
Clara wasn’t herself.
But nobody had asked why.
Nobody had asked what caused it.
Because someone had already given them an explanation.
Adrian turned toward the shelves.
“What exactly did Clara find?””
Daniel walked deeper into the storage unit.
“Everything.””
He opened a box.
Inside were folders organized by date.
“She tracked payments from your company.””
He opened another.
“She found messages between Vanessa and someone else.””
Another folder.
“She found records showing someone accessed confidential files.””
Adrian looked through the documents.
The name appeared again.
Ethan.
His brother.
The person who had stood beside him at Clara’s funeral.
The person who had hugged him and said:
“We’ll get through this together.””
The memory made Adrian’s stomach twist.
“Why?”” he whispered.
Daniel looked at him.
“Because power changes people.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You don’t know Ethan.””
Daniel’s eyes softened.
“I didn’t know Vanessa either.””
The sentence hurt because Adrian knew it was true.
He had been certain before.
And certainty had failed him.
Lily stood quietly beside Mrs. Evelyn.
She held Teddy against her chest.
Adrian noticed she was staring at the boxes.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“Mommy was scared.””
The words were simple.
But they hit harder than any document.
Adrian knelt.
“Why do you say that?””
Lily touched the teddy bear.
“Because she hugged me really tight.””
“When?””
“Before she went away.””
Adrian’s breathing slowed.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked at the floor.
“She said…”
The little girl closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“She said, ‘Lily, sometimes people smile when they are hiding something.’”
Adrian felt a chill.
That sounded exactly like Clara.
Always gentle.
Always trying to explain difficult things in ways a child could understand.
“What else?””
Lily hugged Teddy tighter.
“She said if Daddy ever looked sad, I should give him Teddy.””
Adrian looked at the bear.
“But you didn’t.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa took him.””
Silence.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That is not true.””
Lily flinched.
Adrian stood.
“Stop.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She’s confused.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But she’s remembering.””
The words seemed to hurt Vanessa.
Because for the first time, Adrian wasn’t protecting her.
Daniel walked toward the back of the storage unit.
“There’s something missing.””
Adrian followed.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at an empty space on one shelf.
“Clara kept everything organized.””
“So?””
“So there should be another box.””
Adrian looked around.
“Maybe someone moved it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Clara marked every box.””
He pointed to small labels.
A1.
A2.
A3.
B1.
B2.
There was a gap.
A missing label.
“B7,” Daniel said.
Adrian looked at him.
“Where is it?””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“Clara didn’t leave B7 here.””
A silence followed.
“She hid it somewhere else.””
Adrian looked down at the notebook.
The second recording.
The missing evidence.
The final secret.
“Where?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Then Lily spoke.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked nervous.
“Mommy showed me.””
“When?””
“Before she went away.””
Adrian walked closer.
“Lily, what did Mommy show you?””
The little girl looked at Teddy.
“She showed me where Teddy’s second secret was.””
Adrian’s heart stopped.
“Inside Teddy?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed toward the bear’s ear.
“Near Teddy.””
Everyone looked at the teddy bear.
Adrian carefully examined it.
The torn ear.
The old stitches.
The patch Clara had sewn years ago.
“Where?””
Lily touched the ear.
“Mommy said I would remember when I needed to.””
Adrian gently held the bear.
“Can you show Daddy?””
The little girl nodded.
She took Teddy.
Then walked toward the old boxes.
Everyone followed.
She stopped near a wooden cabinet in the corner.
“This.””
Adrian opened the cabinet.
Inside were old storage supplies.
Nothing unusual.
Lily shook her head.
“Not inside.””
She pointed underneath.
Adrian crouched.
His hand moved along the bottom edge.
Then he felt something.
A small compartment.
Hidden beneath the cabinet.
His pulse increased.
He pulled it open.
Inside was a small black box.
Daniel immediately stepped back.
“That’s it.””
Adrian looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Clara told me she had one final backup.””
Adrian opened the box.
Inside was a small memory card.
And a handwritten note.
His hands shook as he unfolded it.
The note contained only one sentence.
If you found this, it means they found the first one too.
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the memory card.
Someone had known about the first recording.
Someone had tried to stop them from finding the second.
He inserted the card into Daniel’s laptop.
A single video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Just one word.
For Adrian.
He clicked.
The screen turned black.
Then Clara appeared.
But this time, she wasn’t sitting in Lily’s room.
She was outside.
In the rain.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
Adrian covered his mouth.
Because this recording wasn’t made weeks before her death.
It was made hours before.
Clara looked directly into the camera.
“Adrian…”
Her voice shook.
“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””
Adrian’s eyes filled.
“No…”
Clara continued.
“But you need to know the truth.””
She looked behind her.
Like she was afraid someone was watching.
“The person who planned everything…”
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“It wasn’t Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
Vanessa looked confused.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Clara continued.
“She’s guilty of many things.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“But she wasn’t the one who started this.””
The rain became louder.
Clara leaned closer.
“The person who destroyed our family…”
The video glitched.
Then Clara said the name.
The same name written on the paper.
Ethan.
Adrian stopped breathing.
But then Clara said something else.
Something nobody expected.
“Adrian, Ethan didn’t act alone.””
The screen flickered.
And before the video ended, Clara whispered:
“The person beside you right now knows everything.””
The video cut to black.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone had heard the same thing.
The person beside you right now.
Adrian slowly turned.
There were only four people in the room.
Lily.
Daniel.
Mrs. Evelyn.
And Vanessa.
Then Mrs. Evelyn’s phone began ringing.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed instantly.
Adrian noticed.
“What is it?””
She slowly lifted her eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“It’s Ethan.””
