Chapter 2: The Secret Inside Teddy

Adrian had spent two years avoiding the things that reminded him of Clara.

Her photographs.

Her clothes.

The old piano she used to play every Sunday morning.

He told himself it was because he wanted to protect Lily from more sadness.

But standing in the middle of the mansion, holding the teddy bear his daughter refused to let go of, Adrian realized something uncomfortable.

Maybe he wasn’t protecting Lily.

Maybe he was protecting himself.

“Adrian,” Vanessa said softly, forcing a calm expression onto her face.

“You’re really going to believe this?””

Her voice sounded gentle.

Almost hurt.

But Adrian didn’t miss the way her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“I didn’t say that,” he replied.

“Then why are you looking at me like I did something wrong?””

Adrian looked at the bear.

“Because you told me not to touch it.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

The silence answered for her.

Mrs. Evelyn stood near the doorway, watching everything unfold.

She had known Adrian since he was a child.

She had seen him lose his parents.

She had seen him build his company from nothing.

She had seen him fall in love with Clara.

And she had never seen him look at Vanessa the way he was looking at her now.

Not with love.

Not with trust.

With doubt.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered.

Adrian turned around.

The little girl was still crying.

Her cheeks were red, and she was holding onto the sleeve of his jacket.

“I didn’t lie.””

His expression softened immediately.

“I know, sweetheart.””

“No,” Lily said quickly.

She looked afraid.

“I mean… I really didn’t lie.””

Adrian knelt down.

“Tell me what Mommy said.””

Lily glanced at Vanessa.

The moment she did, Vanessa took a step forward.

“Adrian, she’s five years old. She doesn’t understand what she’s saying.””

But Lily squeezed her father’s hand.

“She told me not to tell anyone until you came home.””

Adrian froze.

“Until I came home?””

Lily nodded.

“Mommy said Daddy would know what to do.””

For a moment, Adrian couldn’t breathe.

Because Clara had said something similar before.

Two weeks before the accident.

She had stood in their kitchen late at night, holding a cup of tea with both hands.

She had looked worried.

Different.

When he asked what was wrong, she smiled and said:

“Sometimes the truth waits for the right person to find it.””

At the time, he thought she was talking about something meaningless.

Now, he wasn’t so sure.

“Where did Mommy put it?”” Adrian asked.

Lily pointed at the bear.

“Inside Teddy.””

Everyone watched as Adrian carefully picked up the teddy bear.

Vanessa moved closer.

“Adrian, this is ridiculous.””

He ignored her.

The bear felt heavier than it should have.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

This was the last thing Clara had touched before she was gone.

He remembered buying it for Lily when she was born.

He remembered Clara sitting on the floor of the nursery, sewing the bear’s torn ear after Lily had accidentally ripped it.

He remembered Clara laughing.

“He’s not perfect anymore.””

She had smiled.

“But neither are we.””

Adrian ran his thumb over the old stitching.

Then he noticed it.

A small uneven line on the bear’s stomach.

The same one he saw earlier.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

Vanessa immediately answered.

“It’s just an old repair.””

But Adrian looked up.

“How do you know?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I mean… because Lily carries it everywhere.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

He slowly examined the stitching.

“Get me scissors.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She quickly corrected herself.

“No, I mean… don’t destroy it. It’s sentimental.””

Adrian stared at her.

“You just said it was meaningless.””

“I didn’t say meaningless.””

“You said Lily needed to stop depending on it.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m trying to help her.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“She doesn’t like Teddy.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Lily.””

The little girl shrank back.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything now.

The way Lily avoided standing too close to Vanessa.

The way Vanessa always spoke for her.

The way the child looked relieved whenever Adrian was between them.

“Why doesn’t Vanessa like Teddy?”” Adrian asked.

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because Mommy’s inside.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

The word came out cold.

Not like a worried stepmother.

Like someone losing control.

Adrian heard it.

So did everyone else.

Mrs. Evelyn slowly walked forward.

“Mr. Adrian…”

She looked at the bear.

“There may be something you should know.””

Vanessa immediately turned.

“Mrs. Evelyn, don’t.””

The older woman stopped.

But Adrian caught the warning.

“Know what?””

Mrs. Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

“I found Clara working on that teddy bear several days before the accident.””

Adrian’s heart sank.

“What was she doing?””

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

Mrs. Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She asked me for a small screwdriver.””

Adrian frowned.

“A screwdriver?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed to fix something.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“So now we’re creating a mystery because Clara repaired a toy?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone noticed something.

Vanessa wasn’t asking questions.

She was trying to end them.

Adrian walked to his office.

“Wait here.””

Vanessa followed.

“Adrian.””

He turned.

“What?””

Her voice softened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy our family because of a child’s imagination.””

The words hit him.

Not because they were convincing.

Because they sounded rehearsed.

“Our family?”” Adrian repeated.

“Yes.””

He looked at Lily.

His daughter was sitting on the floor, staring at the bear.

Waiting.

Hoping.

And suddenly Adrian realized something.

For two years, everyone had told him Lily needed to forget Clara.

But nobody had asked what Lily remembered.

He entered his office and returned with a small tool kit.

Vanessa’s face became tense.

“Adrian, please.””

He ignored her.

Carefully, he cut the old thread.

The room became silent.

One stitch.

Then another.

Lily watched with wide eyes.

“Daddy…”

“It’s okay.””

The inside of the teddy bear slowly opened.

At first, everyone expected nothing.

Just stuffing.

Just an old toy.

Vanessa even let out a quiet breath.

Then Adrian felt something hard beneath the fabric.

His fingers stopped.

“What is that?”” Mrs. Evelyn whispered.

Adrian reached inside.

And pulled out a small black object.

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

It was not a piece of stuffing.

It was not a toy part.

It was a tiny electronic device.

A camera.

Nobody spoke.

The entire mansion felt frozen.

Adrian stared at it.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

For the first time, she looked completely unprepared.

Lily slowly stood up.

“Mommy said Teddy was watching.””

Adrian turned toward his daughter.

“Watching what?””

Lily hugged herself.

“The night she went away.””

A chill moved through the room.

Because everyone knew what Lily meant.

The night Clara died.

The accident everyone believed was just an accident.

Adrian looked down at the camera in his hand.

A hidden camera inside the teddy bear.

A camera Clara had secretly placed there.

A camera that had been recording something.

Something someone didn’t want anyone to see.

“Can we play it?”” Lily asked quietly.

Adrian looked at the device.

Then at Vanessa.

Her face was pale.

“Adrian,” she whispered.

But this time, her voice wasn’t gentle.

It was desperate.

“Don’t.””

The word echoed through the room.

And Adrian knew.

Whatever was on that camera…

Vanessa was terrified of it.

He connected the device to his laptop.

The screen remained black for a few seconds.

Then a video file appeared.

Created two days before Clara’s death.

Adrian’s heartbeat quickened.

He clicked play.

At first, there was only darkness.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

A voice Adrian hadn’t heard in two years.

Clara.

“Lily, if you’re watching this…”

Adrian stopped breathing.

The video continued.

“…it means I was right to be afraid.””

Everyone stared at the screen.

And Vanessa slowly stepped backward.

Because Clara’s next words were not a goodbye.

They were a warning.

“Adrian, there is something you need to know about the person living in our house.””

The video paused for a second.

Then Clara said a name.

May you like

A name that made Adrian’s blood run cold.

“Vanessa.””
