Chapter 3: The Recording Clara Left Behind
The room felt smaller after Clara’s voice filled the mansion.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to remember how to breathe.
Adrian stared at the laptop screen, frozen between the past and the present.
For two years, he had lived with one painful truth.
Clara was gone.
But now her voice was alive again.
And she was warning him.
About Vanessa.
“Play it,” Adrian whispered.
His voice sounded different.
Colder.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Adrian, you don’t know what this is.””
He looked at her.
For the first time, he didn’t see the woman who had comforted him after Clara’s funeral.
He saw someone standing in the way of the truth.
“Move.””
The single word made Vanessa stop.
“Adrian…”
“Move.””
She slowly stepped back.
Lily stood beside Mrs. Evelyn, holding onto the older woman’s hand.
The little girl looked at the screen.
She didn’t fully understand what was happening.
But she understood one thing.
Her father was finally listening.
Adrian pressed play.
The video returned.
The image was blurry at first.
Then the camera adjusted.
Everyone recognized the room immediately.
The nursery.
Lily’s old room.
The same room where Clara used to read bedtime stories.
The teddy bear was sitting on a shelf.
The camera angle was low, hidden between the toys.
Then Clara appeared.
She looked tired.
Not physically exhausted.
Emotionally exhausted.
She sat on the edge of Lily’s bed, holding a small notebook.
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
He remembered that bed.
He remembered Clara sitting there every night.
“Hi, Lily,” Clara whispered into the camera.
Her smile was weak.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””
Lily covered her mouth.
“Mommy…”
Adrian reached for her hand.
Clara continued.
“I hope I’m wrong.””
She looked down.
“I really hope I’m wrong.””
The room became completely silent.
“I found something that doesn’t make sense,” Clara said.
“And I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the doorway.
Her arms were crossed.
But her face had lost all color.
Clara opened the notebook.
“I started noticing small things.””
She flipped through several pages.
“Missing documents. Conversations stopping when I entered the room. Messages being deleted.””
Adrian’s eyebrows tightened.
He remembered Clara becoming quieter during the final weeks before the accident.
He remembered asking if something was wrong.
She always smiled.
Always said:
“I’m just tired.””
But she wasn’t.
She was afraid.
“I thought maybe I was imagining things,” Clara continued.
“Then I found something.””
The video shook slightly.
Clara moved closer to the camera.
“There are financial records connected to someone I never expected.””
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
“What records?””
Clara looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa.””
The name echoed through the room.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“This is insane.””
Nobody looked at her.
“You’re watching a dead woman’s fear and treating it like evidence.””
Adrian slowly turned.
“Then explain.””
Her mouth closed.
“Explain what?””
“Explain why my wife was recording this.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
He turned back to the video.
Clara continued.
“I discovered Vanessa had been meeting someone behind Adrian’s back.””
A sharp breath escaped Mrs. Evelyn.
Adrian’s fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.
“Who?”” he whispered.
On the screen, Clara looked down at her notebook.
“I don’t know his full name yet.””
A pause.
“But I know he is connected to the company.””
Adrian froze.
His company.
The one he built from nothing.
The one Clara helped him create.
The one that had recently experienced unexplained financial losses before her death.
He had blamed business mistakes.
Bad investments.
Wrong decisions.
But now…
Maybe it wasn’t that simple.
The video continued.
“I tried asking Vanessa directly.””
Clara looked nervous.
“She denied everything.””
Then Clara leaned closer.
“But people who have nothing to hide don’t become angry when you ask simple questions.””
Vanessa suddenly walked toward the laptop.
“Stop this.””
Adrian stood immediately.
“Don’t touch it.””
The force in his voice shocked everyone.
Even Vanessa.
She stopped.
For years, Adrian had never spoken to her like that.
Not once.
“You’re choosing this?”” she asked quietly.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
Her eyes flashed.
“After everything I did for you?””
Adrian stared at her.
“Everything?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
“You mean after you moved into Clara’s house?””
The words landed heavily.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“That’s unfair.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“I was there when you couldn’t sleep. I was there when you couldn’t even look at Lily without crying because she reminded you of Clara.””
Adrian said nothing.
Because it was true.
Vanessa had been there.
But suddenly he wondered why.
Was it love?
Or opportunity?
The video continued playing.
Clara’s voice returned.
“Adrian, if you’re watching this, please listen carefully.””
The room quieted again.
“Don’t confront Vanessa until you know everything.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why?””
Clara looked terrified.
“Because I think she knows I found out.””
The video shook.
Clara glanced toward the bedroom door.
As if she was afraid someone might walk in.
“She has been asking about Lily’s teddy bear.””
Adrian looked down at the bear beside him.
His stomach turned.
“She asked why Lily keeps it everywhere. She asked if Lily ever sleeps without it.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the teddy bear.
Everyone noticed.
Clara continued.
“And I think she knows there’s something inside.””
A silence followed.
Then Clara said the words that changed everything.
“If anything happens to me, Adrian, do not let Vanessa take Teddy away from Lily.””
Lily began crying softly.
“She knew,” she whispered.
Adrian pulled her closer.
“She knew.””
The video continued.
Clara picked up the teddy bear.
“I put the camera here because Lily deserves to know the truth one day.””
She smiled sadly.
“She deserves to know her mother didn’t leave her.””
Adrian looked away.
A tear escaped before he could stop it.
For two years, he had carried guilt.
He had wondered if Clara had been unhappy.
If maybe she felt alone.
If maybe he should have noticed something.
Now he knew.
She had been fighting.
Alone.
For their daughter.
The video suddenly changed.
The time stamp jumped forward.
A different recording.
A darker room.
The camera angle moved.
Someone entered.
A woman.
Everyone recognized her instantly.
Vanessa.
But this was not the Vanessa standing in the mansion.
This Vanessa looked different.
Cold.
Angry.
She walked into the nursery holding a phone.
“I’m telling you, she knows.””
A man’s voice came from the phone.
“Then handle it.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“I can’t just make her disappear.””
Adrian stopped breathing.
Mrs. Evelyn covered her mouth.
Lily hid against Adrian’s side.
The voice on the phone replied:
“You already did worse.””
Vanessa looked toward the teddy bear.
And said something that made Adrian’s blood run cold.
“She left a recording somewhere. I know she did.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Not for several seconds.
Then Adrian slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“Who was on that phone?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Who was he?””
Still nothing.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Did you know Clara was in danger?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But this time, Adrian couldn’t tell if they were real.
“Adrian…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
The mansion that once felt like home suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Because the woman he trusted was standing in front of him.
And the woman he lost had been trying to warn him.
Vanessa finally whispered:
“I can explain.””
Adrian looked at the laptop.
Then at the teddy bear.
Then at Lily.
“Explain why you knew about the camera.””
Vanessa froze.
That was the question.
The one she couldn’t answer.
Because Clara’s video had revealed something impossible.
Vanessa wasn’t surprised there was a camera.
She was afraid Adrian would find it.
Adrian took out his phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No.””
The panic in her voice was immediate.
Too immediate.
And before Adrian could press the call button, the mansion’s security alarm suddenly began screaming.
Everyone turned toward the front entrance.
A security guard’s voice came through the speaker system.
“Mr. Adrian…”
His voice sounded nervous.
“There’s someone outside.””
Adrian frowned.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then the guard answered:
“He says his name is Daniel.””
Vanessa’s face went completely white.
Because she knew that name.
And Adrian knew from her reaction…
May you like
Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He was the person Clara had been trying to expose.
