Chapter 9: The Truth About Lily

I hated that one sentence.

Not because I believed it.

Because for one second, it scared me.

And Vanessa saw that.

She saw the doubt.

The tiny crack.

That was all she needed.

“Daniel, you have to listen to me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to walk into my life, hurt my daughter, and then tell me she isn’t who I think she is.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I’m trying to tell you the truth.””

“No.””

I pointed at the door.

“You’re trying to control the story.””

Rachel stepped beside me.

“She has been manipulating you from the beginning.””

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Neither did Daniel.””

That made Vanessa quiet.

Because it was true.

I didn’t know.

Not everything.

And that scared me.

I left the apartment.

But the questions followed me.

The entire drive home, I kept thinking about Emma.

Would she hide something from me?

Would she keep a secret about Lily?

When I arrived, Lily was asleep on the couch.

Her drawing was still on the table.

I picked it up.

It was a picture of three people.

Me.

Her.

Emma.

Then I noticed something written at the bottom.

*Our family before everything changed.*

My eyes burned.

Everything changed.

That was exactly how Vanessa saw it.

A family broken.

A space she wanted to fill.

But there was something else.

Something I couldn’t ignore.

Why had Emma never told me about Ethan?

Why had Vanessa’s brother’s name appeared in her journal?

The next morning, I went to the hospital.

Not to see Vanessa.

To find answers.

I asked for Emma’s old medical records.

After hours of waiting, a nurse brought me a file.

“Are you sure you want to read this?””

I nodded.

Inside were reports.

Treatment plans.

Notes.

Then I found something strange.

A document from a month before Emma died.

It wasn’t about cancer.

It was about a DNA test.

My hands went cold.

I read the first line.

*Parentage confirmation results.*

I stopped.

Parentage.

I kept reading.

The names blurred.

My heart raced.

Then I saw the result.

*Daniel Parker — confirmed biological father.*

I let out a breath.

Of course.

I knew that.

But why did this test exist?

Why would Emma order this?

Then I saw the second name.

*Lily Parker.*

The date was after Emma met Vanessa.

Someone had questioned whether Lily was mine.

I felt anger rise.

But then I saw the attached note.

Written by Emma.

*I need to know the truth before I leave. Daniel deserves honesty.*

My hands shook.

I read the next page.

*Lily is Daniel’s daughter. There is no doubt.*

I closed my eyes.

So Vanessa had lied.

Or at least twisted the truth.

But why?

I turned the page.

There was another note.

*The danger is not Lily. The danger is the person trying to make Daniel question her.*

My heart stopped.

The person.

Not a person.

The person.

I left the hospital immediately.

When I got home, Lily was sitting at the table.

She looked worried.

“Daddy?””

I knelt beside her.

“I need to ask you something.””

She nodded.

“Did Vanessa ever tell you something bad about Mommy?””

Lily looked down.

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She said Mommy left secrets.””

My chest tightened.

“What secrets?””

Lily whispered:

“She said one day you would find out you weren’t really my daddy.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The final piece.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to replace Emma.

She was trying to destroy the bond between me and Lily.

I hugged my daughter.

“You listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You are my daughter.””

“But—”

“No.””

I held her face gently.

“Nothing changes that.””

She cried.

Not loudly.

Just a small broken sound.

The sound of a child finally believing she was safe.

That night, I went through every document I had.

Every message.

Every clue.

Then I found something hidden in Emma’s old email account.

A draft.

Never sent.

The subject line:

*If Vanessa comes back.*

My hands froze.

I opened it.

The message was only a few paragraphs.

But the first sentence changed everything.

*Daniel, if Vanessa finds her way back into your life, it means she has not let go.*

I kept reading.

*She will tell you about Ethan. She will tell you about the past. She will make you question yourself.*

My breathing stopped.

*But there is one thing you must know.*

The final paragraph appeared.

*Ethan was not Vanessa’s victim. Vanessa was his.*

I stared at the screen.

Then came the last sentence.

*And Daniel, she is not looking for a family. She is looking for revenge.*

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Daniel.””

I recognized the voice.

The man from before.

The one who warned me.

“You found Emma’s message.””

“How do you know?””

A pause.

“Because I helped her write it.””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

The answer came quietly.

“I’m Ethan Cole.””

My blood froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone thinks I’m dead.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“But Vanessa knows I’m alive.””

May you like

And before I could respond, he added:

“She knows because she tried to kill me.””
