Chapter 3: The Letter Hidden in Her Backpack

The next morning, I sat in the school counselor’s office holding a piece of folded paper.
It was small.
Pink.
Covered with childish handwriting.
My daughter’s handwriting.
The kind of handwriting that still made some letters backwards.
Dr. Harper sat across from me.
“I want you to understand something,” she said.
“We didn’t know about this because Lily never showed anyone.””
I stared at the letter.
“Why?””
The counselor looked toward the window.
“Because she was protecting you.””
Those words destroyed me.
A child.
Protecting her father.
I unfolded the paper.
The first line was enough to make my hands shake.
*Dear Daddy,*
*I think Vanessa is mad at me because I remind her of Mommy.*
I stopped reading.
For a moment, I couldn’t continue.
Then I forced myself.
*I try to be good. I really do. I don’t ask for things. I don’t bother her when she is busy.*
My vision blurred.
Because I knew my daughter.
She was never a difficult child.
She was a child trying to disappear.
I kept reading.
*Sometimes Vanessa tells me that you only stay because you feel sorry for me.*
My breathing became heavier.
*I don’t believe her because you are my daddy. But sometimes I wonder if I am making your life harder.*
I put the letter down.
“No.””
The word came out broken.
Dr. Harper looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I picked up the letter again.
The final sentence was the one that nearly destroyed me.
*I didn’t tell you because you looked happy. I didn’t want to ruin another family.*
I covered my face.
My daughter thought she was the problem.
My daughter thought she had to protect my happiness.
And Vanessa had spent months teaching her that.
When I left the school, I didn’t go home.
I went straight to Vanessa’s apartment.
She opened the door wearing a calm expression.
Like she expected me.
“I knew you would come.””
I held up the letter.
“Did you know about this?””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“You knew?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding everything.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Lily is emotional. She takes things the wrong way.””
I stared at her.
“She wrote that you told her I only stay because I feel sorry for her.””
Vanessa sighed.
“She’s a child.””
“She’s your child too.””
That made her expression harden.
“No.””
One word.
Cold.
Final.
“She is not my child.””
I felt something inside me go silent.
“You spent three years pretending.””
“I tried.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You performed.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I tried to love a child who never accepted me.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“She was six.””
“She hated me from the beginning.””
“No, Vanessa.””
I stepped closer.
“She was scared.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.
“You always chose her.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
“You always looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered.””
“She is my daughter.””
“And what am I?””
I stared at her.
“You were supposed to be my wife.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Exactly.””
The silence between us felt enormous.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“I thought marrying you meant I would finally come first.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted my daughter gone.””
Her silence answered for her.
I left.
But before I reached my car, my phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Her voice was tense.
“Daniel, I found something.””
“What?””
“A box in your garage.””
I frowned.
“What box?””
“The one with Emma’s old things.””
My heart stopped.
“Rachel…”
“I found documents inside.””
“What documents?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Daniel, Vanessa’s name is on them.””
I looked back at the apartment building.
The place where I thought I knew someone.
The place where I thought I had found a future.
“What kind of documents?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Documents showing Vanessa knew your wife before she died.””
I couldn’t move.
Because Vanessa had told me they had never met.
She had told me Emma was only a memory.
A chapter from my past.
But now there was proof.
Proof that Vanessa had been connected to Emma.
Before she ever entered my life.
And suddenly, the question wasn’t why Vanessa hated Lily.
May you like
The question was much darker.
Why had Vanessa wanted to become part of our family in the first place?
