Chapter 6: The Family Vanessa Buried

I drove home faster than I should have.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Because I was afraid of what I didn’t know.

The worst lies are not the ones people tell you.

They are the ones you never think to question.

When I arrived, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

“Daddy?””

I forced a smile.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She immediately noticed something.

Kids always do.

“Something happened.””

I sat beside her.

“Why do you say that?””

“Your eyes.””

I smiled sadly.

“My eyes?””

“They look like when Mommy was sick.””

That sentence broke me.

Because my daughter had learned to recognize pain.

I hugged her.

“We’re okay.””

But I knew that wasn’t completely true.

Not anymore.

That night, I searched everything.

Old emails.

Old messages.

Old photos.

Anything connected to Vanessa.

At first, I found nothing.

Then I found an email.

Three years old.

From before Vanessa and I started dating.

The subject line was simple.

*About Emma’s family.*

I opened it.

The sender was Vanessa’s brother.

Ethan.

I had never met him.

The email was short.

*She is closer than we expected. Be careful.*

That was it.

No explanation.

No context.

Just one sentence.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

“I found something else.””

“What?””

“I looked into Vanessa’s background.””

“And?””

“She changed her last name.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because her family had problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

“She had a brother.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“You don’t.””

I stood up.

“What do you mean?””

“The brother you found.””

“Yes.””

“He died two years before you met Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the email.

At the name.

At the impossible message.

“That’s not possible.””

“I checked three sources.””

My hands shook.

“Then who sent this?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

A noise came from upstairs.

I froze.

“Rachel.””

“What?””

“I’m not alone.””

I walked slowly toward the stairs.

“Daniel?””

I didn’t answer.

The hallway was dark.

“Lily?””

No response.

Then I heard footsteps.

Small footsteps.

My heart jumped.

“Lily?””

She appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I rushed toward her.

“What are you doing up?””

“I heard someone outside.””

I looked toward the window.

Nothing.

Then I saw it.

A white envelope.

Sitting on the floor outside the front door.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

Emma.

Holding Lily as a baby.

On the back, someone had written:

*She knew the truth.*

My blood ran cold.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A man’s voice.

“You’re looking in the wrong place, Daniel.””

I froze.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who tried to warn Emma.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

The man ignored the question.

“She didn’t leave you a warning because she hated Vanessa.””

I listened.

“She left it because she was afraid of what Vanessa would do when she found out.””

My heart stopped.

“Found out what?””

The line went silent.

Then the man whispered:

“That Lily wasn’t the only child Vanessa was trying to take.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

My daughter beside me.

The photograph in my hand.

And one terrifying thought entered my mind.

Vanessa had never been trying to replace Emma.

She had never been trying to build a family.

May you like

She had been trying to take one.

And now I needed to find out why.
