Chapter 5: The Secret Emma Took to Her Grave

I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily’s face.
The fear.
The confusion.
The way she had looked at me like she wasn’t sure I would believe her.
A child should never have to wonder if her father will choose her.
But mine did.
And I hated myself for not noticing sooner.
At 2:17 in the morning, I found Lily sitting on the living room floor.
She was holding one of Emma’s old picture frames.
I turned on the lamp.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up quickly.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart broke.
Again.
“Why are you sorry?””
She looked at the picture.
“Because everything about Mommy makes Vanessa sad.””
I sat beside her.
“Lily.””
She hugged the frame.
“She used to tell me Mommy wasn’t coming back because she chose to leave.””
My jaw tightened.
“She said that?””
Lily nodded.
“She said people leave when they get tired.””
I looked away for a moment.
I couldn’t let Lily see my anger.
Not yet.
“Did Vanessa ever tell you not to tell me things?””
Lily didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Lily.””
She whispered:
“She said you would be sad.””
My voice softened.
“About what?””
“She said if I told you, you would hate her.””
I swallowed.
“She was right.””
Lily looked at me.
“You hate her?””
I thought about it.
Hate was easy.
Hate was simple.
But what I felt was heavier.
“I hate what she did.””
Lily nodded slowly.
Then she asked:
“Do you still love Mommy?””
The question caught me off guard.
“Yes.””
“Then how can you love Vanessa?””
I looked at my daughter.
A question only a child could ask.
But one I had been avoiding.
“I don’t know if I do anymore.””
She looked relieved.
Not happy.
Relieved.
Like she had been carrying a weight too heavy for her tiny shoulders.
The next morning, I called Emma’s old doctor.
Dr. Harris.
He had treated Emma during her final year.
I hadn’t spoken to him since the funeral.
When he answered, there was a long pause.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Is everything okay?””
“No.””
I sat in my car outside his office.
“I need to ask about Vanessa.””
Silence.
Then:
“Why?””
That one word told me everything.
“You know her.””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Dr. Harris sighed.
“Daniel, your wife made me promise not to tell you unless it became necessary.””
My hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“It’s necessary.””
He invited me inside.
Ten minutes later, I was sitting across from the man who had watched my wife disappear day by day.
“Emma met Vanessa through a support group.””
“For cancer patients?””
He nodded.
“Vanessa’s mother had passed away from cancer years earlier. She said she wanted to help families going through it.””
“That sounds normal.””
“It did.””
The way he said it made my stomach tighten.
“What changed?””
Dr. Harris looked down.
“Emma became uncomfortable.””
“Why?””
“She felt Vanessa was becoming too interested in your family.””
I stared at him.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
He opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.
“She left notes.””
My breath caught.
“Notes?””
He handed me a copy.
Emma’s handwriting.
Again.
This time, the words were different.
More afraid.
*Vanessa watches Lily. Not like someone who cares. Like someone studying her.*
I stopped.
Dr. Harris looked at me.
“There’s more.””
I kept reading.
*I don’t know what she wants. Maybe I’m imagining things because I’m sick. But Daniel needs to be careful.*
I looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Emma asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought you would confront Vanessa.””
“And?””
“And she was afraid that would make things worse.””
I stared at the paper.
My wife was dying.
And she was still protecting us.
Dr. Harris continued.
“Emma believed Vanessa was not dangerous because of what she might do.””
“What does that mean?””
“She believed Vanessa was dangerous because of what she wanted.””
My phone buzzed.
A text message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My entire body went cold.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of Lily.
Taken yesterday.
Outside the school.
Underneath it were five words.
*You should have listened.*
I stood up.
Dr. Harris looked alarmed.
“What happened?””
I showed him the phone.
His face changed.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
He looked at the photo again.
“That number.””
“What about it?””
“I recognize it.””
My heart started pounding.
“From where?””
He swallowed.
“Emma’s records.””
The room went silent.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“That number belonged to someone who visited Emma before she died.””
My fingers went numb.
“Who?””
Dr. Harris looked at me.
May you like
And said a name I never expected to hear.
“Vanessa’s brother.””
