Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in Emma’s Journal

I spent the entire night sitting on the living room floor.

I didn’t sleep.

I didn’t move.

I just stared at the photograph of Emma holding Lily as a baby.

The words on the back kept replaying in my mind.

*She knew the truth.*

Not a truth.

Not something.

The truth.

The kind of truth that people hide when they know it can destroy lives.

At sunrise, Lily found me exactly where I had been.

“Daddy?””

I looked up.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

The same rabbit she had slept with since she was three.

“Why are you on the floor?””

I forced a smile.

“Couldn’t sleep.””

She walked closer.

Then she looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Is that Mommy?””

I nodded.

“She looks happy.””

I looked at the picture.

Emma was smiling.

The kind of smile that reached her eyes.

Before cancer.

Before hospitals.

Before goodbye.

“She was.””

Lily sat beside me.

“Did she know Vanessa?””

The question caught me off guard.

“Why do you ask that?””

She shrugged.

“Because Vanessa used to look at Mommy’s pictures.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Sometimes.””

“Why?””

Lily looked down.

“She said she was trying to understand why Daddy loved someone so much.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

That wasn’t curiosity.

That was obsession.

I called Rachel.

Thirty minutes later, she arrived with a small bag.

“I brought coffee.””

“I need something stronger.””

She gave me a concerned look.

“What happened?””

I handed her the photograph.

She read the back.

Her expression changed.

“Daniel…”

“I need to find Emma’s journal.””

Rachel nodded.

“Are you sure she kept one?””

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she told me once.””

I remembered the conversation.

Years ago.

Emma sitting on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders.

She was tired, but she was smiling.

“I write things down,” she had said.

“Why?””

“Because memories can disappear.””

I never asked what she meant.

I wish I had.

We searched the house for hours.

Old drawers.

Closets.

Storage boxes.

Places I had avoided for years.

Finally, Rachel found a small wooden container hidden behind a shelf in our bedroom.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

She held it carefully.

There was no label.

No name.

Nothing.

But I knew.

I knew before I opened it.

Inside was a journal.

The cover was worn.

The edges were damaged.

Emma’s handwriting was on the first page.

*For Daniel and Lily.*

My throat tightened.

I opened it.

The first pages were normal.

Memories.

Thoughts.

Little moments.

Lily’s first steps.

Her first words.

The day she learned to ride a bicycle.

Then the entries changed.

The handwriting became messier.

More rushed.

*March 14*

*Vanessa came again today.*

My heart stopped.

I continued.

*She brought flowers. She said she wanted to help. But something about her questions makes me uncomfortable.*

I turned the page.

*She asked if Daniel would ever date again. She asked what kind of woman he would choose.*

Another page.

*She asked about Lily’s relationship with me. She asked if Lily would remember me if I was gone.*

I closed my eyes.

Rachel whispered:

“She was watching them.””

I nodded.

The next entry made my hands shake.

*I asked Vanessa why she cared so much about my family. She cried and said she lost her own family and wanted to help save mine.*

A tear fell onto the page.

Then:

*But today I found something strange.*

I leaned closer.

*Vanessa has been contacting Daniel’s workplace. She asked questions about his schedule. She asked when he was home.*

My heart pounded.

Why?

Why would someone do that?

The final entry was dated two weeks before Emma died.

The handwriting was barely readable.

*I know Daniel will think I’m being paranoid. Maybe I am. But if Vanessa becomes close to him, I need him to know one thing.*

I held my breath.

The sentence continued.

*Do not trust someone who wants to become part of your family before they understand the pain that family carries.*

I flipped the page.

Nothing.

The journal ended there.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“What?””

“There has to be more.””

I searched the back pages.

Nothing.

Then I felt something.

A small bump beneath the paper.

A hidden compartment.

Rachel grabbed a knife from the kitchen.

Carefully, we opened the back cover.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

One sentence.

Only one.

*Vanessa did not come into our lives by accident.*

Below it was an address.

No name.

No explanation.

Just a location.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is this?””

“I don’t know.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*You found it, didn’t you?*

I stared at the screen.

How did she know?

Another message arrived.

*Emma always thought she was smarter than everyone else.*

My jaw tightened.

Then the final message appeared.

*But she never understood what I was willing to lose.*

I showed Rachel.

Her face went pale.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“She knows about the journal.””

I nodded.

“And she knows we’re looking.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Where are you going?””

“To the address.””

Rachel stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You’re not doing this alone.””

I wanted to argue.

But she was right.

Ten minutes later, we were driving across town.

The address led us to an old apartment building.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

The hallway smelled like dust and old paint.

We reached the third floor.

Apartment 3B.

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then I noticed the door was already unlocked.

I looked at Rachel.

“Stay behind me.””

I pushed it open.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

Photos covered the walls.

Newspaper clippings.

Documents.

And in the center of the room…

A picture of my family.

Me.

Emma.

Lily.

With Vanessa standing beside us.

But the photo was impossible.

Because it was taken before I ever met Vanessa.

I stepped closer.

My hands started shaking.

On the wall above it were three words.

*I FOUND THEM.*

Then a sound came from behind us.

A door closing.

Rachel turned.

“Daniel…”

I looked toward the hallway.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“You should have stopped looking.””

May you like

I knew that voice.

Vanessa.
