Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Wife

The box sat on my garage floor for ten minutes before I touched it.

Ten minutes of staring.

Ten minutes of wondering if opening it would destroy whatever pieces of my old life I still had left.

Emma’s handwriting was on the side.

A simple label written with a black marker.

*Emma — Personal*

I had seen that box countless times.

After she died, I couldn’t bring myself to go through everything. Clothes, letters, photographs, old journals.

It felt like opening a door to a room where I knew I would never find her again.

But now Vanessa’s name was connected to it.

And I needed answers.

Rachel stood beside me.

“Are you sure you want to do this?””

I looked at the box.

“No.””

She waited.

“But I need to.””

I lifted the lid.

The smell hit me first.

Lavender.

Emma’s favorite scent.

For one painful second, I wasn’t in my garage anymore.

I was back in our old kitchen.

Emma was standing barefoot by the counter, laughing because I had burned dinner for the third time that week.

“You’re the only person who can ruin pasta,” she had joked.

I closed my eyes.

Then opened them.

That life was gone.

I reached inside.

The first things were ordinary.

Old photos.

Birthday cards.

A scarf.

Then I found an envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Written.

In Emma’s handwriting.

*Daniel.*

My fingers shook.

Rachel noticed.

“Is that from her?””

I nodded.

“I don’t know.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

My eyes moved across the first sentence.

*If you are reading this, something happened that made you look deeper than I ever wanted you to.*

I stopped breathing.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

*Daniel, I need you to know something about Vanessa.*

My heart dropped.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

*I met her before you did.*

Rachel looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I continued.

**She came to the hospital during my last months. At first, I thought she was another volunteer. She was kind.

She brought flowers. She asked questions about Lily.**

My grip tightened.

Questions about Lily.

*I thought she cared. I was wrong.*

I looked up.

“Emma knew her.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

The next lines were harder.

**Vanessa became interested in our family. Not just me. Not just my illness.

She wanted to know about you. About Lily. About our home.**

My stomach turned.

*She asked strange questions. Questions a stranger shouldn’t ask.*

The paper shook in my hand.

*She asked if Lily would remember me. She asked if you would ever love someone again. She asked if you felt guilty about moving on.*

I felt cold.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

*I never told you because I didn’t want my final months to be filled with fear. I wanted to spend them loving you and Lily.*

I lowered the letter.

Rachel sat down.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

“But why?””

That was the question.

The one I couldn’t escape.

Why would Vanessa enter my life years later?

Why would she build trust?

Why would she become the person my daughter depended on?

Unless it was never about love.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel looked at me.

“You don’t have to answer.””

I pressed accept.

“Why did you know my wife?””

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Silence.

Finally, Vanessa spoke.

“Who told you?””

My chest tightened.

“That’s your first question?””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stood up.

“You listen to me.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You lied about knowing Emma.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Another silence.

Then she said:

“From the truth.””

I looked at Rachel.

She mouthed, “Record it.””

I turned on my phone’s recorder.

“What truth?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Your wife knew she was dying.””

I froze.

“That’s not a secret.””

“No.””

Her words came slowly.

“She knew more than that.””

My heart started pounding.

“What are you talking about?””

“Daniel…”

“No. Tell me.””

She breathed out.

“Emma was afraid.””

“Of what?””

The answer came.

“She was afraid Lily would be left alone.””

I closed my eyes.

“That’s why you came into our lives?””

“No.””

The hesitation bothered me.

“Then why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that silence told me more than words could.

“Vanessa.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Because Emma asked me to.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“She wanted someone to help you.””

I stared at the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

“You’re lying.””

“Ask yourself something, Daniel.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Why do you think Emma trusted me?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

And suddenly, I hated that.

After everything.

After three years.

I didn’t know.

Vanessa continued.

“Emma knew she wasn’t going to be there for Lily.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She wanted someone who could take care of her.””

“Not someone who would hurt her.””

The line went quiet.

Then Vanessa said:

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“Yes.””

“You abused my daughter.””

“I lost control.””

“You blamed a six-year-old for your own resentment.””

Her voice changed.

The softness disappeared.

“You don’t understand what it was like.””

“What?””

“To live in a house where everyone loved a woman who was gone.””

I froze.

There it was.

The jealousy.

The bitterness.

The truth she had hidden.

“You hated Emma.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the box.

At the letter.

At my wife’s handwriting.

“You hated that Lily looked like her.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

And that scared me more than anything.

Before I could speak, another sound came through the phone.

A notification.

A message.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You need to stop looking into this.””

My blood went cold.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re going to find.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel stood.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“She’s scared.””

“Of what?””

I looked down at Emma’s letter.

And for the first time, I wondered if Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something.

May you like

Because Emma had asked me to trust Vanessa.

But she had never told me why.
