Chapter 9: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
Nick caught it before it hit the floor.
He looked down.
And his entire expression changed.
"No.""
The word came out quietly.
Like he was trying to convince himself.
"No.""
I stared at him.
"Who is it?""
He didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because the person in the photograph wasn't a stranger.
It was someone who had stood beside him through everything.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who knew his family.
His secrets.
His life.
Finally, Nick whispered:
"Ryan.""
The name landed heavily.
Ryan Cole.
Nick's best friend since college.
The man who had helped plan our wedding.
The man who gave the speech about how lucky Nick was to find someone like me.
The man who hugged me earlier that night and told me Martha was "just old-fashioned.""
I felt sick.
"What is he doing with Martha?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Helping her.""
Nick shook his head.
"No.""
His voice was sharper.
"Ryan wouldn't.""
Daniel didn't argue.
He simply pointed at the photograph.
The truth was already there.
The picture showed Ryan standing beside Martha and Helen.
Years earlier.
Before I knew any of them.
Before Nick knew.
Before me.
Nick stared at it.
"When was this taken?""
Daniel answered:
"Six years ago.""
My stomach dropped.
Six years.
That meant Ryan had been involved long before our wedding.
Long before Martha cut my hair.
Long before Grace returned.
Nick looked devastated.
"Why?""
Daniel sighed.
"Because Ryan owed Martha.""
"For what?""
Nobody answered.
Then Grace spoke.
"Because Martha has always collected debts.""
Nick looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Grace's face was serious.
"It means Martha doesn't help people.""
A pause.
"She owns them.""
The room went quiet.
I thought about Vanessa.
Her entire life planned.
Her mother trapped.
Nick controlled.
Me attacked.
Martha didn't build relationships.
She built cages.
Daniel continued.
"Ryan's father had financial problems.""
Nick frowned.
"His family was wealthy.""
"Because Martha saved them.""
My blood went cold.
Another person.
Another debt.
Another person who owed Martha loyalty.
Nick looked angry.
"And Ryan helped her because of that?""
Daniel nodded.
"He believed he had no choice.""
I shook my head.
"There is always a choice.""
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Martha.
"You made people believe fear was the same as loyalty.""
For once, she didn't argue.
Because maybe she knew I was right.
Nick pulled out his phone.
"I need to call him.""
Daniel stopped him.
"Don't.""
Nick looked confused.
"Why?""
"Because if Ryan knows you found out, he'll run.""
Nick clenched his jaw.
"He lied to me.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then make him tell the truth.""
Grace looked at the entrance.
"He won't have much time.""
Everyone turned.
"What do you mean?""
Grace's expression changed.
"Because Martha always has an escape plan.""
And almost immediately, we heard it.
A car engine.
Outside.
Martha moved.
Too quickly.
Nick noticed.
"Mom.""
She stopped.
The entire room watched her.
"You were leaving.""
She said nothing.
"After everything, you were just going to run.""
Her face hardened.
"I was protecting myself.""
Nick laughed sadly.
"At least you're honest now.""
Martha looked at him.
"I did what I had to do.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You did what you wanted.""
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
Because Nick was finally saying what everyone else had been too afraid to say.
Martha looked at me.
And something changed.
"You think you won.""
I stared.
"What?""
"You think exposing me makes you better.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I looked around the room.
"I think the truth makes you responsible.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Everyone went silent.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice whispered:
"Emily.""
I froze.
Because I knew the voice.
I had heard it before.
On the recording my father left.
It was Ryan.
"Emily, you need to listen carefully.""
Nick moved closer.
"What is it?""
I put the phone on speaker.
Ryan sounded terrified.
"Martha is not the only person who lied to you.""
Everyone stared.
"What are you talking about?"" I asked.
A pause.
Then:
"Your father didn't disappear because of Martha.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Ryan's voice shook.
"Someone else made sure he could never expose the truth.""
Nick looked at his father.
Daniel went pale.
"Who?""
Ryan whispered:
"The person who helped Martha wasn't working for her.""
A pause.
"They were protecting their own secret.""
The room froze.
"What secret?""
Ryan took a shaky breath.
"The night your father vanished...""
The line crackled.
Then he said:
"He wasn't alone.""
I felt cold.
"Who was with him?""
Silence.
Then Ryan whispered:
"Your mother.""
My entire body went numb.
No.
Not my mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who sacrificed everything.
The woman who held me together after my father died.
"No.""
Nick grabbed my hand.
"Emily.""
But I couldn't hear him.
Because Ryan's final words echoed through the room.
"Your mother knows exactly what happened that night.""
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And for the first time that night...
I wasn't looking at Martha.
I was looking for answers from the one person I thought had never lied to me.
My mother.
And she was standing near the back of the room.
Crying.
May you like
Because she knew.
She knew the truth was finally coming.
