Chapter 6: The Promise My Father Left Behind

I couldn't speak.

The room disappeared around me.

All I could hear was that sentence.

Your father asked me to protect you.

My father.

The man who had been gone for seventeen years.

The man whose memory lived in an old wooden hairbrush and the stories my mother told me before bed.

The man who had never gotten to see my wedding.

Apparently, he had left behind secrets too.

Nick's father slowly stepped into the room.

He looked older than I imagined.

Tired.

Broken.

But there was something familiar in his eyes.

Something kind.

The same kindness Nick carried.

"I know this is a lot," he said.

Nobody laughed.

Because that was the biggest understatement anyone had ever made.

Nick stared at him.

"You're alive.""

The man nodded.

"I am.""

"Why didn't you find me?""

His face fell.

"Because I thought staying away was the only way to keep you safe.""

Nick looked hurt.

"You let me believe you were dead.""

"I know.""

His voice cracked.

"And I will regret that forever.""

Martha stood near the exit.

For once, she wasn't trying to interrupt.

Because she knew this wasn't her story anymore.

The room belonged to the people she had silenced.

Nick looked at me.

Then at his father.

"What does Emily have to do with this?""

His father took a breath.

"Everything.""

My stomach tightened.

I hated that word.

Everything.

It meant my life was about to change again.

"I knew Emily's father," he said.

My eyes filled.

"How?""

He looked at me.

"Your father was my closest friend.""

I shook my head.

"My father never mentioned you.""

"He couldn't.""

"Why?""

The man's expression turned serious.

"Because Martha made sure he couldn't.""

My hands started shaking.

Nick stepped closer.

"Explain.""

His father looked at Martha.

"She knows.""

Martha remained silent.

"Your father discovered that Martha and Helen were moving money from the Bennett and Whitmore companies.""

Helen immediately snapped.

"That is a lie.""

The older man looked at her.

"You signed the documents yourself.""

Helen froze.

Nick looked between them.

"What documents?""

Grace answered.

"The ones that destroyed Emily's family.""

My throat tightened.

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

My mother had spent years believing she failed.

Believing she couldn't provide enough.

Believing our struggle was her fault.

And all along...

Someone had taken it from us.

Nick looked devastated.

"Emily.""

I couldn't answer.

I was thinking about my mother working until her hands cracked.

About pretending everything was fine.

About telling me we were lucky when we had almost nothing.

My father had known.

He had fought.

And someone had stopped him.

Nick's father continued.

"Your father was going to expose them.""

Martha finally spoke.

"He was going to destroy everyone.""

The room turned toward her.

She looked angry again.

The fear was gone.

Replaced by the woman I knew.

The woman who believed she was always right.

"You don't understand what would have happened.""

Nick stared.

"You stole from people.""

"I protected this family.""

"No.""

His voice shook.

"You protected yourself.""

Martha looked at him.

"I was trying to preserve your future.""

"By ruining someone else's?""

She had no answer.

Again.

No answer.

I looked at Martha.

"Why me?""

Everyone became silent.

Because that was the question I had carried for years.

Why me?

Why my family?

Why did she hate me before she even knew me?

Martha looked at me.

And something strange happened.

For one second, I saw regret.

Real regret.

"You were supposed to disappear.""

My heart stopped.

Nick moved closer.

"What does that mean?""

Martha closed her eyes.

"I didn't know Emily would become part of your life.""

I stared at her.

"You knew my family.""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Before Nick met me?""

"Yes.""

The honesty shocked everyone.

My voice shook.

"What did you do?""

Martha looked down.

"Your father was going to report us.""

The room waited.

"And I had to stop him.""

My blood ran cold.

Nick's face changed.

"What did you do?""

Martha looked at me.

"Your father lost everything because he made enemies he couldn't defeat.""

I stepped forward.

"No.""

My voice was stronger than I expected.

"You don't get to say that.""

Everyone looked at me.

"You don't get to rewrite my father's life like he was the problem.""

Martha stared.

"My father was a good man.""

The room was silent.

"He raised me to believe people mattered more than money.""

I touched my hair.

Or what remained of it.

"And tonight you proved exactly who you are.""

For once, Martha looked away first.

Nick took my hand.

"I am so sorry.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For not seeing it sooner.""

I shook my head.

"You were manipulated too.""

He looked at Martha.

"No.""

His voice hardened.

"I allowed it.""

That was the difference.

Nick finally understood.

Silence was a choice too.

Then his father reached into his coat.

"I have something for Emily.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He handed me a small wooden box.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized it.

My father's handwriting was carved into the lid.

Emily.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And a small silver pendant.

The same pendant I remembered my father wearing.

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was his.

My eyes blurred.

But I read the first line.

My dearest Emily,

If you are reading this, it means Martha failed to keep the truth hidden forever.

I stopped breathing.

Nick read over my shoulder.

The letter continued.

I need you to know one thing. Everything that happened to our family was not your mother's fault.

Tears fell onto the paper.

I had spent my entire life believing we had simply been unlucky.

But my father knew.

He knew I would blame myself.

The letter continued.

Martha Bennett took more than money from us. She took years. She took peace. But she will not take your future.

I looked up.

Martha was watching me.

And for the first time, she looked afraid of me.

Not because I had power.

Because I had the truth.

Then I reached the final lines.

And my entire body went cold.

Because my father had written one final warning.

Emily,

There is something Martha has hidden from everyone.

Something even Nick doesn't know.

The truth about the night I disappeared.

My hands froze.

Because my father wasn't just exposing Martha.

He was revealing something about himself.

And underneath the letter was one final sentence.

A sentence that made Nick's father whisper:

"Oh no.""

I looked up.

"What?""

His face had gone pale.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

The final message my father left behind was not about Martha.

May you like

It was about Nick.

And the secret that connected our families forever.
