Chapter 7: The Secret Between Two Fathers

The room was silent as I stared at the final sentence of my father’s letter.

The words blurred through my tears.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I didn’t want to understand them.

Emily,

The truth about what happened that night is not what you were told.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"What does this mean?""

Nobody answered.

Not Nick.

Not his father.

Not Grace.

Not even Martha.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because all my life, I had believed I knew how my father died.

I believed he had worked himself sick after losing everything.

I believed the stress had broken him.

I believed the last years of his life were filled with regret.

But now I was standing in a room full of people who knew there was another story.

Nick stepped closer.

"Emily.""

I looked at him.

His face was filled with confusion.

The same confusion I felt.

"What does your father mean?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

Nick's father looked down.

And that was when I realized.

He knew.

"You do.""

The older man closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

"Yes.""

My heart sank.

"You knew?""

He looked at me.

"I knew your father was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

His eyes moved toward Martha.

"From the truth.""

Martha suddenly laughed.

A small, bitter sound.

"After all these years, you're still trying to play the hero.""

Nick looked at her.

"Mom.""

She ignored him.

"You always thought you were better than me.""

Grace stepped forward.

"No, Martha. He simply knew right from wrong.""

Martha's expression changed.

"You don't know what I sacrificed.""

Grace looked at her.

"We know exactly what you sacrificed.""

A pause.

"Everyone else.""

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

Martha had spent years convincing everyone she was protecting them.

But every person she "protected" ended up hurt.

Nick took the letter from my hands carefully.

"What happened that night?""

His father sat down.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not like the businessman everyone respected.

Just like a man carrying too many regrets.

"Your father found proof.""

Nick looked at him.

"Proof of what?""

"That Martha and Helen had been moving money from several accounts.""

Helen immediately shook her head.

"No.""

The man looked at her.

"Your signature was on the transfers.""

Her face went pale.

Nick looked shocked.

"My father knew?""

"He knew everything.""

"Then why didn't he tell anyone?""

His father looked at me.

"Because of Emily.""

I froze.

"Me?""

He nodded.

"Your father discovered something else.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?""

He looked down.

"The company problems weren't just financial.""

Nobody moved.

"What does that mean?""

He took a deep breath.

"Martha was willing to destroy anyone who threatened her.""

A cold feeling spread through me.

Nick understood first.

"You think she did something to Emily's father.""

The older man didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The silence was enough.

I stepped back.

"No.""

The word came out quietly.

Because some truths are too painful to accept.

"No.""

My father wasn't killed.

He wasn't hurt.

He wasn't taken away from me.

Those things belonged to strangers.

Not my life.

Not my memories.

But then I remembered.

My father had always told me one thing.

People don't become dangerous when they are angry.

They become dangerous when they believe they are right.

And Martha always believed she was right.

Nick reached for my hand.

"We need to know.""

I looked at him.

"What if I don't want to?""

His expression softened.

"Then we stop.""

That was Nick.

Even after everything.

Even when the truth was ugly.

He still gave me a choice.

Martha watched us.

And suddenly I understood something.

That was what she hated most.

Not my background.

Not my family.

Not my lack of money.

Choice.

I had something she never gave people.

The ability to choose.

Grace walked toward the table.

"There is something else you need to see.""

She pulled out another folder.

My heart sank.

"How much more is there?""

Grace looked at me sadly.

"Enough to explain why Martha was so determined to keep you away from Nick.""

Nick frowned.

"She didn't just dislike Emily?""

Grace shook her head.

"No.""

She looked at me.

"She was afraid of what would happen if you found out.""

Inside the folder were documents.

Old documents.

Contracts.

Financial records.

And one photograph.

I picked it up.

My breath caught.

It was my father.

Standing beside Nick's father.

They were younger.

Smiling.

Happy.

Friends.

But that wasn't what shocked me.

Behind them was another person.

A young Martha.

And she wasn't angry.

She wasn't cold.

She was smiling.

Like she belonged with them.

"What is this?""

Nick's father answered quietly.

"Before everything happened, our families were close.""

I looked at Martha.

She looked away.

"Your father and I were going to expose the truth together.""

"Then why didn't you?""

His expression broke.

"Because I got scared.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I thought I could fix things quietly.""

He looked at Nick.

"I thought I could protect everyone.""

A sad smile crossed his face.

"I was wrong.""

I looked back at the documents.

There was one page that caught my attention.

A handwritten note.

My father's handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

Martha knows about the child.

I stopped.

The room tilted.

"The child?""

Everyone froze.

Nick looked at me.

"What child?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Martha.

For the first time, she looked truly terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

"What child?"" Nick repeated.

Martha whispered:

"Don't.""

But it was too late.

Because the truth had already found the door.

Grace looked at Nick.

"There was one more secret Martha buried.""

My hands shook.

The note continued.

If anything happens to me, make sure Emily knows she was never alone.

She has a brother.

I couldn't breathe.

A brother.

The word didn't feel real.

I looked at my mother in my memory.

The small apartment.

The years of struggle.

Why had nobody ever told me?

Nick looked at Martha.

"You knew?""

Martha said nothing.

And that silence destroyed whatever remained.

"You knew Emily had a brother?""

Her eyes filled.

"Yes.""

My voice barely came out.

"Where is he?""

Nobody answered.

Then Martha whispered:

"He's closer than you think.""

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

A man stood there.

Someone I had never seen before.

But the moment our eyes met, I knew.

Because he had my father's eyes.

And he said:

"Emily.""

May you like

My knees almost gave out.

"I'm sorry it took me so long to come home.""
