Chapter 3: The Letter Martha Buried

Nick didn't open the envelope immediately.

He just stared at it.

Like touching it would change everything.

"Martha," he whispered.

His mother looked away.

That was when everyone knew.

The letter was real.

I had spent nine years watching Martha manipulate every situation.

She always had an answer.

A reason.

A perfectly prepared explanation.

But now she stood in the middle of her son's wedding reception with nothing.

No words.

No defense.

Just fear.

Nick slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter, yellowed from age.

His hands shook.

I moved closer.

"Nick?""

He looked at me.

"My father wrote this.""

Grace nodded.

"He wrote it before he died.""

The room went quiet.

Nick unfolded the paper.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then his face changed.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

"What does it say?"" Martha demanded.

Nick looked at her.

"You don't get to ask that.""

The sharpness in his voice made her step back.

He read silently for another moment.

Then he whispered:

"He knew.""

Nobody understood.

Grace did.

"He knew what your mother did.""

Martha's voice rose.

"Grace, enough.""

Nick looked up.

"What did you do?""

The question hung between them.

Martha looked around.

A hundred eyes watched her.

For years, she had cared more about appearances than anything else.

But now there was no image left to protect.

"I was protecting this family.""

Nick laughed once.

A broken sound.

"By lying to me?""

"I did what I had to do.""

My stomach tightened.

There it was.

The sentence every person who hurts others uses.

I had to.

Martha looked at me.

"Women like Emily don't understand what it takes to preserve a family name.""

I felt my anger rise.

"Women like me?""

She ignored me.

"You think love is enough.""

Nick stepped between us.

"Don't talk to her.""

Martha stared at him.

"You would choose her over your own mother?""

Nick's expression changed.

Because that was the question Martha had always asked.

Not directly.

But through every insult.

Every manipulation.

Every attempt to make him feel guilty.

Choose me.

Or choose her.

Grace shook her head.

"You still haven't changed.""

Martha looked at her.

"You ruined everything.""

Grace looked shocked.

"Me?""

She laughed softly.

"No, Martha. You ruined everything the day you decided controlling people was the same as loving them.""

Nick looked down at the letter again.

"What happened with my father?""

Martha stayed silent.

Grace answered.

"Your father discovered your mother had been hiding money from the family company.""

Martha's face changed.

"That is a lie.""

Grace shook her head.

"He wanted a divorce.""

Nick stopped breathing.

"My parents were happy.""

Grace looked at him sadly.

"Your father wanted you to believe that.""

The words hit him.

Because Nick had spent his whole life believing a story.

Just like I had.

Grace continued.

"Your mother convinced everyone that your father abandoned the family.""

Martha whispered.

"Because he did.""

"No.""

Grace's voice became firm.

"Because he left you.""

Nobody spoke.

Nick looked at his mother.

"You told me Dad left because he didn't care.""

Martha's eyes filled with tears.

"He hurt me.""

Nick shook his head.

"That doesn't answer the question.""

She looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the woman who had controlled everyone had finally run out of strength.

"I made mistakes.""

Grace looked at her.

"That is a small word for what you did.""

Martha ignored her.

"Nick, I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

The reception guests began quietly leaving.

Nobody wanted to be part of the scene anymore.

But I couldn't move.

Because I knew something important had happened.

For years, I had wondered why Martha hated me.

Why she looked at me like I had stolen something from her.

Now I understood.

She wasn't afraid of me.

She was afraid of losing control.

Nick folded the letter.

"Why didn't you tell me about Grace?""

Martha looked at him.

"Because she would turn you against me.""

Grace sighed.

"No.""

She looked at Nick.

"I stayed away because your father asked me to.""

Nick frowned.

"My father?""

She nodded.

"He said Martha had already lost one family member because of her pride.""

She paused.

"And he didn't want you to lose your mother too.""

That surprised me.

Because even after everything, his father had still protected her.

Nick looked at the floor.

For a moment, I saw the sixteen-year-old boy I had fallen in love with.

The boy who wanted everyone to be okay.

Then he looked at Martha.

"I spent my entire life defending you.""

Her lips trembled.

"I know.""

"And you let me believe lies.""

"I was scared.""

Nick's eyes hardened.

"Being scared doesn't give you permission to hurt people.""

Martha looked at me.

And for a second, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said:

"You took him away from me.""

The words shocked everyone.

I stared at her.

"I didn't take anyone.""

She looked at my wedding dress.

"My son was supposed to marry someone who understood this family.""

Nick closed his eyes.

Because even now.

Even after everything.

She still blamed me.

Grace walked toward the exit.

"I think everyone has heard enough for tonight.""

But before she reached the door, she stopped.

She turned back.

"Emily.""

I looked at her.

"Yes?""

She smiled sadly.

"Your braid wasn't the only thing Martha cut tonight.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Grace looked at Nick.

Then at me.

"Ask your husband why Martha was so desperate to keep Vanessa Whitmore in his life.""

My heart stopped.

Nick looked confused.

"Vanessa?""

Across the room, Vanessa's face went pale.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

And for the first time that night, Martha wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at Vanessa.

Like she was afraid.

Grace opened the door.

"Because the reason has nothing to do with money.""

Then she walked away.

May you like

Leaving behind the question nobody wanted to ask.

What exactly was Martha Bennett hiding about Vanessa Whitmore?
