Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew
The man standing at the doorway looked like a stranger.
But something about him felt familiar.
The curve of his smile.
The sadness in his eyes.
The way he looked at me like he had been waiting his entire life for this moment.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My brain kept rejecting what my heart already knew.
This was impossible.
My father only had one child.
Me.
At least, that was what I had believed.
The man stepped forward slowly.
"My name is Daniel Carter.""
My breath stopped.
Carter.
My last name.
The same name I carried.
The same name my father carried.
Nick looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Emily...""
I shook my head.
"I don't understand.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
His voice cracked.
"I wish I could say this was easier.""
Martha moved suddenly.
"Leave.""
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at her.
And smiled sadly.
"Still giving orders, Martha?""
Her face hardened.
"You have no right to be here.""
Daniel laughed softly.
"No right?""
He stepped into the room.
"You took twenty-five years from me.""
The words made everyone freeze.
Twenty-five years.
My heart ached.
Because I knew what that meant.
A lifetime.
A childhood.
A family.
Gone.
I looked at Nick's father.
"How long have you known?""
He looked ashamed.
"Since the beginning.""
I felt betrayed.
Another secret.
Another person who knew the truth while I lived inside a lie.
"You knew I had a brother?""
He nodded.
"I promised your father I would protect both of you.""
I stared.
"Both?""
Daniel looked down.
"My father didn't abandon you.""
Tears filled my eyes.
"Then why did he leave?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because Martha gave him a choice.""
The room became silent.
"What choice?""
Daniel looked at Martha.
"Expose her and risk losing his family.""
A pause.
"Or disappear and let her believe she won.""
My chest tightened.
"But he died.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
His voice became softer.
"But not before he made sure we were safe.""
I looked at him.
"Where were you?""
His expression broke.
"Hidden.""
That single word hurt.
"Hidden from who?""
"Martha.""
The answer was immediate.
I looked at Martha.
She looked away.
Daniel continued.
"When our father discovered what she was doing, she panicked.""
Nick stepped forward.
"What did she do?""
Daniel looked at him.
"She threatened him.""
The room grew colder.
"She told him if he exposed her, she would make sure neither of his children had a future.""
My eyes burned.
"My father had another child.""
Daniel nodded.
"He didn't want you growing up knowing you were separated because of her.""
I shook my head.
"But he let me believe I was alone.""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"He regretted that.""
He reached into his pocket.
Then he pulled out something small.
A necklace.
My breath caught.
Because it was identical to mine.
My fingers moved automatically to the pendant around my neck.
"You have one.""
Daniel nodded.
"Father made them for us.""
I touched mine.
I had worn it since I was thirteen.
My mother told me my father gave it to me before he died.
But apparently, there was more.
"He wanted us to find each other someday.""
I looked at Martha.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
For the first time, she didn't look like a powerful woman.
She looked exhausted.
"I thought it was better.""
I almost laughed.
"Better?""
My voice shook.
"You took my family.""
Martha looked at me.
"I protected you.""
"No.""
I stepped forward.
"You protected yourself.""
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
Daniel looked at Martha.
"You always said you loved Nick.""
Martha looked at him.
"I do.""
"Then why did you try to control his entire life?""
Her face changed.
"Because I knew what happened when people made their own choices.""
Grace looked at her sadly.
"That is your excuse for everything.""
Martha ignored her.
"I lost control once.""
Nick frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Martha looked at him.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
His voice was cold.
"I don't.""
She stared at him.
"Your father chose everyone else over me.""
Nick shook his head.
"You mean he chose honesty.""
She looked hurt.
And that was when I realized something.
Martha didn't think she was evil.
That was the most terrifying part.
She truly believed she was the victim.
She believed every cruel thing she did was justified.
Daniel walked toward me.
"I know this is a lot.""
I looked at him.
"Do you remember me?""
His face broke.
"I remember everything.""
My throat tightened.
"I was four years old when I last saw you.""
Four.
A child.
My older brother had known me.
Held me.
Loved me.
And then vanished.
"I watched you sleep before I left.""
I covered my mouth.
"Why?""
"Because Father told me I had to go.""
Tears fell from his eyes.
"He told me one day I would find you.""
A painful silence followed.
Then Daniel looked at Nick.
"And I think today was that day.""
Nick nodded slowly.
The man who had spent the entire night discovering lies suddenly had another family member standing in front of him.
Two broken families.
Connected by one woman's choices.
Then Daniel looked at me.
"But there is something you need to know.""
I wiped my tears.
"What?""
His expression changed.
Serious.
Afraid.
"The night your father disappeared...""
Everyone became still.
"He didn't just leave evidence against Martha.""
My heart pounded.
"What did he leave?""
Daniel looked at Nick.
Then at me.
"He left proof that someone else helped her.""
The room went silent.
"Who?""
Daniel reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
And my blood froze.
Because standing beside Martha in the picture was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been at my wedding.
Someone who had smiled at me all night.
May you like
Someone I never suspected.
The person in the photograph was Nick's closest friend.
