Chapter 5: The Call From the Dead

Nick stared at the phone screen.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

The name glowing on the display seemed impossible.

"Dad.""

The word left Nick's mouth like a whisper.

My heart pounded.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

Nick's father had died eleven years earlier.

There was no explanation.

No logical reason.

Yet his name was there.

Calling.

Martha stepped forward.

"Don't answer.""

Nick looked at her.

That was the wrong thing to say.

Because if she had said anything else, maybe he would have hesitated.

But fear had exposed her.

"What are you afraid I'll hear?""

Martha's face changed.

"Nick.""

He pressed accept.

"Hello?""

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice came through the speaker.

A voice older than memory.

"Nick?""

Nick stopped moving.

I saw tears immediately fill his eyes.

Because some voices never leave you.

Even if you haven't heard them in years.

"Dad?""

Everyone around us froze.

The voice cracked.

"My boy.""

Nick covered his mouth.

I held his arm.

The entire room watched as a man who had spent his life believing his father abandoned him realized that maybe he had been wrong.

"Where are you?"" Nick whispered.

The voice paused.

"That doesn't matter right now.""

Nick looked at Martha.

She looked terrified.

"What matters," the voice continued, "is that you finally know the truth.""

Nick's expression changed.

"You knew?""

A long silence.

Then:

"I tried to tell you.""

Martha closed her eyes.

Like she already knew what was coming.

Nick turned away from her.

"Tell me what happened.""

The voice on the phone grew softer.

"Your mother wasn't honest with you.""

Martha suddenly grabbed Nick's arm.

"Hang up.""

He pulled away.

"No.""

It was the first time he had ever said that to her.

No hesitation.

No guilt.

Just no.

His father continued.

"Thirty-two years ago, Grace was supposed to expose your mother.""

Nick looked toward the door where Grace had left.

"Expose her for what?""

The answer came slowly.

"For destroying families.""

My stomach tightened.

The same pattern.

Over and over.

Martha didn't just hurt people.

She controlled them.

She broke them.

Then convinced everyone she was protecting them.

Nick looked at me.

I knew what he was thinking.

The same thing I was.

How many people had she done this to?

His father continued.

"Your mother believed she had the right to decide who belonged in the Bennett family.""

Nick closed his eyes.

"She did this to Emily because...""

The voice went quiet.

Then:

"Because Emily's father was the person who almost stopped her.""

I felt like the floor disappeared.

My father.

Nick looked at me.

"What?""

The voice continued.

"Your father discovered what Martha and Helen had done.""

Helen gasped.

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately looked away.

Nick's voice became harder.

"What did they do?""

The answer was simple.

And devastating.

"They stole from people who trusted them.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

The bakery.

The apartment.

The struggle.

It wasn't an accident.

It wasn't fate.

Someone had caused it.

And that someone was standing twenty feet away.

Martha.

Nick looked at her.

"Is this true?""

She didn't answer.

Again.

That silence.

That terrible silence.

Was enough.

The voice continued.

"I wanted to tell you everything when you were older.""

"Why didn't you?""

"Because Martha threatened to destroy you.""

Nick went still.

"What?""

The voice shook.

"She said if I exposed her, she would make sure you lost everything.""

Martha whispered:

"Stop.""

Nobody listened.

"I left because I thought distance would protect you.""

Nick's eyes filled.

"You left me.""

The voice broke.

"I know.""

That was the first time I heard pain in that man's voice.

"I regretted it every day.""

Nick sat down.

The strong, confident man I knew suddenly looked like a child.

A child realizing his entire childhood had been built on a lie.

I knelt beside him.

He held my hand.

"I thought he didn't love me.""

The sentence broke my heart.

Because Nick had spent his entire life carrying a wound someone else created.

The voice continued.

"There is one more thing you need to know.""

Nick looked up.

"What?""

A pause.

Then:

"I didn't die when they told you I did.""

Everyone froze.

Martha's face turned white.

The room erupted.

"You what?""

Nick stood.

"You're alive?""

The voice whispered:

"Yes.""

Nobody moved.

The impossible had become real.

Nick looked at Martha.

"She told me you were dead.""

The voice answered:

"Because she wanted you to stop looking for me.""

My hands went cold.

How could someone do that?

How could a mother erase a father from her child's life?

Then I remembered the scissors.

The braid.

The humiliation.

Martha didn't just hurt people.

She removed anything she couldn't control.

Nick looked at the phone.

"Where are you?""

The voice hesitated.

"I can't tell you yet.""

"Why?""

"Because someone is still watching.""

Everyone looked around.

The restaurant suddenly felt unsafe.

The old fear returned.

Martha slowly stepped backward.

Nick noticed.

"Mom.""

She stopped.

"Who is watching?""

Nobody answered.

Then another sound came from the entrance.

A woman's voice.

"She doesn't have to answer.""

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway was Grace.

But she wasn't alone.

Beside her was an older man using a cane.

A man with tired eyes.

A man Nick recognized instantly.

"Dad?""

The older man looked at his son.

And whispered:

"I'm sorry it took me this long.""

Nick didn't move.

Neither did anyone else.

Then Martha did something nobody expected.

She ran.

Not away from the room.

Not away from the guests.

Toward the exit.

Because she knew the truth had finally arrived.

But before she reached the door, Grace spoke.

"Martha.""

She stopped.

Grace's voice was calm.

"Thirty-two years ago, you cut my hair because you thought nobody would ever challenge you.""

Martha slowly turned.

Grace looked at Nick.

"Tonight, she cut Emily's hair because she thought history would repeat itself.""

A pause.

Then Grace said:

"But she forgot one thing.""

Martha stared at her.

"What?""

Grace smiled.

"Someone always survives to tell the story.""

And then Nick's father looked at me.

His expression changed.

Like he had recognized something.

Something about me.

Something I had never known.

"Emily," he whispered.

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know my name?""

He looked at Martha.

Then at me.

May you like

And said:

"Because your father asked me to protect you.""
