Chapter 8: The Mother Who Hid The Truth

The church had gone beyond silence.

Silence was too peaceful a word.

This was something else.

A room full of people trying to understand a truth that had no place in their reality.

My mother.

Laura Bennett.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held my hand when I was sick.

The woman who stayed awake all night when I had nightmares.

The woman who told me honesty was the most important thing in the world.

She had been in that video.

Standing with Evelyn Carter.

The woman who had tried to destroy my life.

I looked at William.

“What do you mean?””

My voice barely worked.

“You thought the recording was destroyed?””

William closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because your mother asked me to destroy it.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My mother asked him.

My mother.

The person I trusted most.

I stepped away.

“No.””

Daniel immediately reached for my arm.

I pulled away.

Not because I was angry at him.

Because I couldn’t handle anyone touching me while my entire history was falling apart.

“My mother would never work with Evelyn.””

William looked heartbroken.

“I know what it looks like.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

My voice became louder.

“You didn’t know her.””

Nobody spoke.

Because they didn’t.

They knew secrets.

They knew documents.

They knew old business deals.

But they didn’t know the woman who made me breakfast every morning.

The woman who sang when she cleaned the house.

The woman who cried when I graduated.

They didn’t know my mother.

Thomas stepped forward carefully.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“There may be another explanation.””

I laughed.

“Another explanation?””

I pointed at the screen.

“We just watched my mother tell Evelyn to hide me.””

“No.””

William’s voice was firm.

“She was not telling Evelyn to hide you.””

“Then what was she doing?””

William looked toward the screen.

“She was trying to convince Evelyn that you were gone.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked confused too.

“What are you saying?””

William took a deep breath.

“Your mother knew Evelyn was dangerous.””

“Then why stand in a room with her?””

“Because Laura was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

William nodded.

“I know.””

“Everyone uses those words after doing something terrible.””

The church was quiet.

Because nobody could argue.

William looked down.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

“I failed you.””

The honesty hurt more.

“My mother disappeared for years because of this.””

William looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“And Evelyn knew?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you?””

His face broke.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I swear, Emma. I never knew.””

I believed him.

That was the worst part.

Because Daniel was the one person in this room who had been lied to almost as much as I had.

The officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

Everyone turned.

He listened for a few seconds.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Thomas noticed.

“What happened?””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“We traced the message.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who sent it?””

The officer hesitated.

“It came from a phone registered under a false name.””

“Can you find the person?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“The phone was activated today.””

Daniel frowned.

“Today?””

“Yes.””

The officer looked at the destroyed wedding decorations.

“Someone knew exactly where you would be.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone had planned this.

Not just Evelyn.

Not just the DNA test.

Everything.

The accusations.

The video.

The timing.

The wedding.

Someone wanted all of this to happen today.

Thomas suddenly looked at William.

“Where is the original file?””

William looked confused.

“What?””

“The video.””

Thomas pointed at the screen.

“That copy was damaged. Someone wanted us to see only part of it.””

William’s expression changed.

“You think there’s more?””

“I know there is.””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“Because she reacted before the recording ended.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“That proves nothing.””

“No?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“You knew exactly what was coming next.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.””

For once, she didn’t immediately respond.

That was terrifying.

Because Evelyn always had an answer.

A justification.

A reason.

But now she had nothing.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your father was going to destroy this family.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“My father?””

“He was going to expose everything.””

“What everything?””

Evelyn looked at William.

“He knew about Michael.””

My breathing stopped.

William looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“What about Michael?””

Nobody answered.

I looked between them.

“My real father.””

The words felt strange.

Like they belonged to someone else.

“What happened to him?””

William slowly spoke.

“Michael discovered the truth about the company.””

“What truth?””

“He discovered your grandfather had been hiding illegal transactions.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The fraud started after your grandfather died.””

William frowned.

“What?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“Which means Michael was not exposing the person who stole money from the company.””

A pause.

“He was exposing the person who covered it up.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Daniel whispered:

“Mom.””

She looked exhausted.

Not defeated.

Exhausted.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

The words shocked everyone.

William stepped forward.

“You always say that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

His voice was filled with anger now.

“You made choices.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You walked away.””

“I left because you threatened my son.””

“And I kept him alive.””

Daniel stared.

“Mom, stop.””

She turned toward him.

“No, Daniel. You deserve to know.””

Her eyes moved around the church.

“I did everything because I knew what would happen if the truth came out.””

“What would happen?””

She looked at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“What about me?””

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Your existence threatened everything.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

She ignored him.

“Michael wasn’t just your father.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at William.

Then back at me.

“He was the only person who knew the full truth.””

“What truth?””

She took a breath.

“The Carter family wasn’t built on success.””

Nobody moved.

“It was built on a crime.””

Thomas went pale.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your father discovered that Carter Industries was created using stolen money.””

The room erupted.

Daniel stared.

“My grandfather?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

William looked devastated.

“And Michael found out.””

“Yes.””

I felt numb.

My entire life had become a mystery involving people who were supposed to be strangers.

But they weren’t.

They were connected to me from the beginning.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Then why attack Emma?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because she was the last piece.””

“The last piece of what?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked toward the church doors.

Everyone followed her gaze.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark jacket.

Holding a file.

The officer immediately reached for his radio.

The man raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

Daniel stared.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

And my entire body froze.

Because I had seen that face before.

Not in real life.

In photographs.

Old photographs my mother kept hidden in a box.

The man looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Emma.””

My heart stopped.

He said my name like he had been waiting years to say it.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry I couldn’t find you sooner.””

William stepped forward.

“Michael.””

The man nodded.

“Yes.””

The church exploded into chaos.

May you like

Because the man everyone believed was dead had just walked into my wedding.

And he was looking at me like he was seeing his daughter for the first time.
