Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Folder

The man standing at the altar looked like he had walked into the wrong wedding.

But the way Evelyn Carter’s face changed told me he belonged there.

She had been furious.

She had been confident.

She had been ready to destroy me in front of everyone I loved.

Now, she looked terrified.

“Who are you?”” Daniel asked.

The stranger didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the crowd.

Then he looked at the giant screen still frozen on the image of Evelyn entering the medical laboratory.

“My name is Thomas Reed,” he said.

“And I was the attorney who handled your grandfather’s estate.””

Daniel frowned.

“My grandfather died five years ago.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes. And before he died, he made one final amendment to his will.””

A murmur moved through the church.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Thomas, this is not the time.””

He looked at her calmly.

“Actually, Evelyn, this is exactly the time.””

The room felt colder.

I stood beside Daniel, still wearing a wedding dress covered in white frosting, trying to understand how my wedding had transformed into something that looked like a courtroom.

Daniel stared at the folder in Thomas’s hand.

“What does this have to do with my mother lying about Emma?””

Thomas opened the folder.

“Everything.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Thomas finally looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m revealing what you tried to hide.””

Rebecca, who had been standing near the front pew, suddenly spoke.

“Mom…”

Her voice was small.

Almost afraid.

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

That single word told everyone enough.

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

Daniel noticed.

“Rebecca?””

His sister looked like she wanted to disappear.

“What happened?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“What happened?””

Thomas placed a document on the altar.

“Daniel, your grandfather discovered financial irregularities in the company before his death.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What kind of irregularities?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“The kind involving someone in this room.””

Nobody moved.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Your grandfather believed someone close to him had been transferring money from Carter Industries through private accounts.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“My father’s company?””

“Yes.””

“And you think my mother did this?””

Thomas looked down at the papers.

“I don’t think. I have evidence.””

A wave of whispers spread again.

Evelyn laughed nervously.

“You’re seriously going to accuse me based on old paperwork?””

“No,” Thomas replied.

“I’m going to accuse you based on your own signatures.””

The church went silent.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom?””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him. He is trying to manipulate you.””

I watched her carefully.

The woman who had just humiliated me.

The woman who had thrown my entire future into chaos.

She was no longer attacking.

She was defending.

And that meant she was scared.

Thomas opened another page.

“Your grandfather added a condition to his will. If any member of the family was found to have committed fraud against the company, their inheritance would be transferred to charity.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“My mother’s inheritance?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“That is impossible.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You knew about the amendment.””

She said nothing.

Daniel looked between them.

“You knew?””

Evelyn’s eyes moved to her son.

“I knew your grandfather was angry before he died.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You knew about the will?””

Her silence answered him.

The pain on Daniel’s face was worse than the anger.

Because betrayal from a stranger hurts.

But betrayal from your own mother changes something inside you.

“Mom,” he whispered, “why?””

Evelyn looked at me.

And suddenly, I understood.

This was never only about protecting Daniel.

It was about controlling him.

She had tried to make him leave me because she believed I was a threat.

Not because of the baby.

Because of what would happen if Daniel married me.

I stepped closer.

“You wanted him to leave me before today.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Do I?””

My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.

“You knew about the baby. You knew Daniel was the father. You knew the DNA test would prove it.””

Her eyes flickered.

Just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

“You planned this.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“Is that true?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Daniel—”

“Is it true?””

Her silence was louder than any confession.

Rebecca suddenly started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“What did you do?””

Rebecca wiped her face.

“I didn’t know what she was going to do.””

Evelyn snapped.

“Rebecca.””

But Rebecca continued.

“She told me it was just going to be a conversation.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“You helped her?””

“I thought she wanted to stop the wedding because she had proof you were being lied to.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“I didn’t know she switched the test.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You helped someone destroy my life without even knowing the truth?””

Rebecca looked ashamed.

“I was wrong.””

Daniel took a step back.

The man I had known for three years suddenly looked like he was seeing his family for the first time.

Thomas closed the folder.

“There is one more thing.””

I felt exhausted.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

Another piece of a puzzle I never asked to solve.

Daniel looked at him.

“What now?””

Thomas reached inside the folder and removed a photograph.

He placed it on the altar.

Daniel picked it up.

His face changed immediately.

“What is this?””

I looked at the picture.

It showed a woman standing outside a hospital.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

But Daniel did.

“That’s…”

His voice faded.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“Her name is Claire Morgan.””

The color drained from Daniel’s face.

“Why do I know that name?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because she is the woman your father had a relationship with before he died.””

The church exploded with whispers.

Evelyn looked furious.

“Enough.””

But Thomas wasn’t finished.

“Claire had a child.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s hand tightened around the photograph.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas took a breath.

“I’m saying you have a half-sibling.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Evelyn.

Daniel looked completely lost.

“My father had another child?””

“Yes.””

“And my mother knew?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“She knew.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“Mom?””

Evelyn’s expression was unreadable.

For a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.

Instead, she said the words that shocked everyone.

“That woman is dangerous.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“She is the reason your father was miserable.””

Thomas interrupted.

“Or perhaps she was the reason Evelyn’s secrets were close to being exposed.””

Evelyn glared at him.

“You have no right.””

“I have every right. Your husband left evidence before his death.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“What evidence?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he pulled out a small envelope.

“Your father left this for you.””

Daniel looked confused.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I get it before?””

Thomas glanced at Evelyn.

“Because someone made sure you never did.””

The entire church went silent.

Daniel looked at his mother.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Did you hide a letter from my father?””

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“No.””

But she answered too quickly.

Thomas handed the envelope to Daniel.

The name written across the front was clear.

Daniel Carter.

My heart pounded as he opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Daniel read the first line.

Then another.

Then his hands started shaking.

“What does it say?”” Rebecca asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at his mother.

Then at me.

Then back at the letter.

Finally, he whispered:

“My father knew someone was trying to destroy his family.””

Evelyn took a step forward.

“Daniel, give me that.””

He pulled the letter away.

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Stronger.

“You lied about the DNA test.””

“Daniel—”

“You hid my father’s letter.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

He looked around the church filled with our guests.

The people who came to witness our marriage.

Instead, they had witnessed the collapse of an entire family.

Then Daniel read the final sentence aloud.

And every person in that church froze.

“My father wrote that the person who betrayed him was not a stranger…”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“…it was someone inside this family.””

A sudden sound came from the back of the church.

The doors opened.

A woman stood there.

She was older than me.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

And when Daniel saw her face, he dropped the letter.

Because he recognized her.

“Claire?””

The woman stepped inside.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

Her voice trembled.

“I should have told you the truth years ago.””

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“But your mother threatened to take everything from me if I ever came near you.””

Evelyn’s face turned pale.

May you like

And then Claire said the one thing that made Daniel completely still.

“Because I know what really happened the night your father died.””
