Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
“Ask your mother.””
Evelyn’s words hung in the air.
Nobody understood them.
Except her.
And maybe William.
But the way they looked at me told me something I had never considered.
This wasn’t about my pregnancy.
It wasn’t about Daniel.
It wasn’t even about the wedding.
I was the missing piece.
I looked at William.
“What does she mean?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because a person who has nothing to hide answers immediately.
William looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“Dad.””
His voice was sharp.
“You know something.””
William sighed.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then say it.””
The entire church waited.
Even Evelyn looked interested now.
Like she had been waiting years for this conversation.
William looked at me.
“Emma, your mother’s name was Laura Bennett, wasn’t it?””
My heart stopped.
I hadn’t heard that name spoken in years.
Not from a stranger.
Not like this.
“Yes.””
My voice came out quietly.
“What does my mother have to do with any of this?””
William’s expression changed.
Regret.
Deep regret.
“Your mother was involved with Carter Industries.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She was.””
“My mother was a nurse.””
“She was also an accountant before that.””
I stared at him.
I knew my mother had worked different jobs before I was born.
I knew she rarely talked about her younger years.
But this?
No.
“This makes no sense.””
William nodded.
“I understand why you would think that.””
“Then explain it.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“She knows the beginning of the story.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn smiled slightly.
“Finally.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“You’re enjoying this.””
She looked at her son.
“I’m enjoying watching the truth come out.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You’re enjoying controlling the truth.””
That wiped the smile from her face.
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t afraid of her.
I watched Evelyn carefully.
She had spent years making everyone else feel powerless.
But now the person she controlled most was standing in front of her.
Her own son.
William stepped forward.
“Emma’s mother discovered the financial fraud.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“She found records showing money was being moved from the company into private accounts.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That matches what I found.””
I looked between them.
“My mother knew about this?””
“Yes.””
“And what happened?””
William looked down.
“She tried to expose it.””
A horrible feeling settled in my stomach.
“Then why didn’t she?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
Because something stopped her.
William took a breath.
“Because she found out who was involved.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“No.””
His voice was almost a whisper.
William didn’t look away.
“Your mother.””
The church erupted.
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice was immediate.
Strong.
Defensive.
“That is a lie.””
William turned toward her.
“You know it isn’t.””
“You abandoned your family and now you come back pretending to be a hero?””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Did you abandon us?””
William closed his eyes.
The question hurt.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“I did.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
William looked older than he had moments ago.
“Because I thought leaving was the only way to keep you alive.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when someone is willing to destroy anyone who gets close to the truth.””
His eyes moved toward Evelyn.
Daniel looked at his mother.
And she looked away.
That was the first time she looked guilty.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Guilty.
I stepped back.
My head was spinning.
“My mother died believing she failed me.””
William looked at me.
“She didn’t fail you.””
“Then why did she hide this?””
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
The phrase made me angry.
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Everyone says that.””
William understood.
“You have every right to hate those words.””
I looked at him.
“Then don’t use them.””
He nodded.
“Fair enough.””
The honesty surprised me.
Daniel moved closer.
“Dad, why is Emma connected to this?””
William looked at the photograph again.
The picture of me outside the hospital.
“Because your mother discovered something else.””
“What?””
William hesitated.
Then he said:
“Emma wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The church went silent.
My body went cold.
“What?””
Daniel immediately looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
William looked at me.
“When your mother discovered the financial records, she realized someone would do anything to stop her from talking.””
My hands began shaking.
“She was pregnant with you.””
I felt the room disappear.
“My mother was pregnant with me.””
“Yes.””
“She knew she was in danger?””
“Yes.””
William looked down.
“She went into hiding.””
I swallowed.
“And then?””
William’s voice became quieter.
“She disappeared for six months.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It happened.””
“My mother told everyone she was sick.””
“She was hiding.””
“From who?””
William looked at Evelyn.
I didn’t want to look.
But I did.
Evelyn’s face was expressionless.
And that scared me.
Because she wasn’t denying it.
“From your mother.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“My mother was afraid of Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“My mother was involved before I even met Emma?””
William nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“You knew who Emma was.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Mom.””
Her silence was becoming unbearable.
Finally, she spoke.
“I knew her mother.””
My heart pounded.
“You knew my mother?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Yes.””
“How?””
A small smile appeared.
“I was there the night she disappeared.””
The words made my blood run cold.
Daniel stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“You always wondered why your mother never told you about your father.””
I froze.
Nobody knew that.
Not even Daniel.
My mother had never spoken about him.
Not once.
I had always assumed he left.
Or maybe he died.
Or maybe she simply didn’t want to talk.
Evelyn continued.
“Because she knew the truth would put you in danger.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She tilted her head.
“You don’t remember, do you?””
“Remember what?””
“The night you came into the Carter family.””
I stared at her.
“I never came into your family.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Oh, Emma.””
The way she said my name made my skin crawl.
“You really don’t know.””
Daniel looked between us.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn looked at her son.
Then at me.
“Your fiancée isn’t just some woman your mother was trying to protect.””
She paused.
“She is the reason your father almost destroyed everything.””
My stomach dropped.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Evelyn walked closer.
“You spent your whole life believing you were Laura Bennett’s daughter.””
She stopped.
“And you are.””
Relief flickered through me.
Then disappeared.
“Then what are you saying?””
Evelyn smiled.
“I’m saying you were also William Carter’s daughter.””
Nobody breathed.
The words didn’t make sense.
No.
They couldn’t.
Daniel looked at his father.
His face was filled with confusion.
“Dad?””
William looked devastated.
And that was the worst part.
Because he didn’t look surprised.
He looked caught.
I stepped away.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, that’s not true.””
William whispered:
“Emma…”
“Don’t.””
I backed away.
“Don’t say my name like you know me.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“My entire life…”
I looked at Daniel.
The man I was supposed to marry.
“My entire relationship with you…”
My voice broke.
“Was this all planned?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
But I couldn’t hear him.
Not anymore.
Because the impossible truth was standing in front of me.
The woman who tried to destroy my wedding.
The man who was supposed to be my future father-in-law.
The family I thought I was marrying into.
They were connected to me already.
Before Daniel.
Before the wedding.
Before everything.
Then Thomas suddenly looked at the documents in his hand.
His face changed.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
He picked up one page.
Then another.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
Then at William.
“This changes everything.””
“What?””
Thomas’s voice lowered.
“Emma’s birth records.””
I stared.
“What about them?””
He looked terrified.
“They were altered.””
A silence followed.
Then he said:
“Emma Bennett was never listed as your daughter, William.””
William looked confused.
Thomas continued.
“Because someone changed the records after she was born.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
And this time, even she looked afraid.
Thomas held up the document.
“The person who changed them…”
He swallowed.
“…was not trying to hide that Emma was William’s daughter.””
May you like
Everyone waited.
“The person was trying to hide who Emma’s real father was.””
