Chapter 7: The Name Hidden On My Birth Certificate
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They floated through the church like a language I didn’t understand.
My birth records were altered.
Someone changed them.
Someone had been hiding my real father.
I stared at Thomas.
“Who?””
My voice sounded distant.
“Who changed my records?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told me everything.
Everyone in that church knew something I didn’t.
And I was tired of being the last person to learn the truth about my own life.
“Tell me.””
Thomas looked at William.
Then at Evelyn.
Finally, he looked back at me.
“The person who requested the change was listed as a legal guardian.””
My heart raced.
“My mother?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He lowered the paper.
“Evelyn Carter.””
The church went completely silent.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“No.””
It was barely a word.
More like a broken breath.
Evelyn’s face remained still.
Too still.
“You changed Emma’s birth records?””
Daniel’s voice grew louder.
“Mom?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked at her.
The woman who had spent the morning trying to convince everyone I was a liar.
The woman who had tried to destroy my marriage.
She had known me before I knew her.
She had known my mother.
She had known my father.
And somehow, she had been part of my identity being erased.
“Why?”” I asked.
My voice shook.
“Why would you do that?””
Evelyn finally looked at me.
And the expression on her face wasn’t guilt.
It was sadness.
That almost made it worse.
“You think this is simple.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I think you took something from me.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what I took from you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Stop talking like that.””
Evelyn ignored him.
“Your entire life was built around a lie.””
I laughed quietly.
“Funny.””
The anger inside me finally started replacing the fear.
“Because that seems to be the one thing everyone in this family knows how to create.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma…”
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
The words surprised him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see it.””
He shook his head.
“This isn’t your fault.””
But I wasn’t talking about the wedding anymore.
I was talking about everything.
The secrets.
The missing pieces.
The feeling that everyone had been protecting a truth from me while I was living inside the consequences.
Thomas walked closer.
“There’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
There was always more.
“What now?””
He looked at the document.
“The name that was removed from your original birth record.””
He paused.
“Was not William Carter.””
William looked confused.
“Then whose name was it?””
Thomas turned the paper around.
Daniel moved closer.
I saw his eyes scan the page.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
“I know this name.””
My stomach tightened.
“What name?””
He slowly handed me the paper.
I looked down.
There it was.
A name written in black ink.
A name that meant nothing to me.
But everything to them.
*Michael Carter.*
I frowned.
“Who is Michael Carter?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rebecca whispered:
“My uncle.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Daniel stared at the paper.
“Michael was my father’s older brother.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your biological father was not William Carter.””
The room disappeared around me.
“What?””
William looked devastated.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The betrayal felt physical.
“You knew I wasn’t your daughter?””
William’s eyes filled with regret.
“I knew the truth was complicated.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You knew my whole identity was wrong.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The anger came instantly.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“Please don’t say that.””
My voice broke.
“I spent my entire life wondering why my mother never talked about my father.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why everyone avoided questions.””
Then back at William.
“And you all knew.””
William looked away.
That was answer enough.
Daniel stepped beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
He looked devastated.
But I couldn’t let myself fall apart.
Not yet.
“Why did Evelyn change the records?””
Thomas answered.
“Because Michael Carter was the person who exposed the company fraud.””
I froze.
“What?””
Thomas nodded.
“Michael discovered the money being stolen.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
“And what happened to him?””
Nobody spoke.
Then William said quietly:
“He disappeared.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Disappeared?””
William nodded.
“The same year Emma was born.””
I looked at Evelyn.
The pieces started connecting.
“My mother knew.””
“Yes,” William said.
“She knew Michael was in danger.””
“And me?””
William looked at me.
“Your mother believed you would be next.””
I touched the edge of the paper.
My birth certificate.
A piece of paper that was supposed to tell me who I was.
Instead, it was proof that everyone had lied.
“Why didn’t my mother tell me?””
William’s face softened.
“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””
I laughed bitterly.
“A normal life?””
I looked around the church.
“At my wedding?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He showed the phone to Thomas.
The message was from an unknown number.
*Stop digging into the past. You already lost one family today. Don’t lose another.*
The officer immediately asked:
“Can we trace it?””
Daniel handed him the phone.
“Please.””
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at the message.
Then at William.
“You brought this back.””
William’s face hardened.
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You should have stayed away.””
Daniel stared.
“You know who sent that?””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Mom, tell him.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Rebecca.””
“No.””
Rebecca wiped her tears.
“I’m tired.””
The room became still.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“I knew about the DNA test.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“I knew Mom was changing it.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stepped back.
“How long?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Months.””
The pain on Daniel’s face was unbearable.
“You helped her.””
“I thought I was protecting our family.””
He laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Rebecca started crying.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
Daniel shook his head.
“But it did.””
Then the church lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The screen behind us turned on.
The wedding slideshow appeared.
Except it wasn’t our photos.
It was a video.
A hidden recording.
The image was blurry.
But the voice was clear.
Evelyn’s voice.
The entire church froze.
“Make sure Michael Carter never finds her.””
My blood ran cold.
The video continued.
A younger Evelyn stood in an office.
Talking to someone off-camera.
“He can’t know the baby survived.””
Daniel grabbed my hand.
The person behind the camera spoke.
“Then what happens if she finds out?””
Evelyn answered.
“Then we make sure she never learns who she really is.””
The screen flickered.
The video stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then William whispered:
“That recording…”
He looked terrified.
“I thought it was destroyed.””
I turned toward him.
“What recording?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, William Carter looked afraid.
“Emma…”
His voice cracked.
“The person Evelyn was talking to in that video…”
A pause.
May you like
Then he said:
“It was your mother.””
