Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The church that had been filled with music and celebration was now filled with secrets.

Claire Morgan stood in the doorway, holding a worn leather handbag against her chest like it was the only thing keeping her steady.

Daniel stared at her.

Not with anger.

Not with disbelief.

With the expression of someone watching the foundation of his entire life crack open.

“You know what happened the night my father died?”” he asked.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Claire looked toward Evelyn.

That was all it took.

Everyone understood.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Her voice was sharp.

Commanding.

The same voice she had used countless times to make people obey her.

But this time, Daniel didn’t move.

He didn’t look at her like his mother.

He looked at her like a stranger.

“Mom.””

One word.

But it carried years of disappointment.

Evelyn’s face softened.

“Daniel, she is manipulating you.””

Claire shook her head.

“No, I’m finally telling him the truth.””

Evelyn laughed.

“The truth?””

She pointed toward Claire.

“This woman disappeared from your father’s life when things became difficult.””

Claire flinched.

But she didn’t leave.

“I disappeared because you threatened me.””

The church erupted.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What did she threaten you with?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag.

“I brought something.””

She pulled out a small envelope.

It looked old.

The edges were worn.

Like it had been hidden away for years.

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?””

Claire walked slowly toward the altar.

“This is a letter your father wrote before he died.””

Thomas Reed stepped forward.

“Another letter?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked confused.

“But Thomas already gave me my father’s letter.””

Claire looked at the envelope in his hand.

“That was not the only one.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

I watched Evelyn carefully.

Her face had changed again.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She was calculating.

She was trying to figure out how much Claire knew.

“How long have you had that?”” Daniel asked.

Claire looked at him.

“Eight years.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Eight years?””

“I wanted to give it to you sooner.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“Because your mother told me that if I ever contacted you, she would make sure I lost my home, my job, and my daughter.””

A gasp came from the guests.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“Mom…”

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.””

Rebecca stepped back.

For the first time, she looked afraid of her own mother.

Daniel slowly took the envelope from Claire.

His fingers shook as he opened it.

The paper inside was yellowed with age.

He read silently.

I watched his expression change line by line.

First confusion.

Then sadness.

Then anger.

“What does it say?”” I asked softly.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He folded the letter once.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“My father knew.””

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“Knew what?””

“That someone was stealing from the company.””

Thomas nodded.

“I told you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the letter again.

“He knew more than that.””

Everyone waited.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“He knew the person stealing from the company was someone he trusted.””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“And you believe this?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I believe my father’s handwriting.””

That hurt her.

I could see it.

Not because she was accused.

Because her son was no longer automatically choosing her side.

Daniel continued reading.

“He wrote that he planned to expose the person after gathering enough evidence.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Does he mention who?””

Daniel looked down.

His face became pale.

“Yes.””

The church became silent.

“Who?”” Rebecca whispered.

Daniel looked at the letter.

Then he said:

“He wrote that he found a second set of financial records hidden inside his office.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“That matches what I discovered.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But my father died before he could reveal the person.””

“Yes.””

Daniel gripped the paper.

“What else?””

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

Something in the letter made him freeze.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t understand.””

“What does it say?””

He swallowed.

“My father wrote that he knew the person would try to control me after his death.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“He said, ‘If Daniel is told lies about the people around him, it will not be an accident. It will be because someone benefits from keeping him alone.’”

Nobody spoke.

The meaning was clear.

Evelyn had spent years controlling Daniel’s world.

Keeping him dependent.

Keeping him away from anyone who could challenge her.

Including me.

Evelyn suddenly stepped toward Daniel.

“Your father was sick when he wrote that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He was sick?””

“Yes.””

“You never told me he wrote this.””

“I was protecting you.””

The same words.

Again.

Always the same words.

Protecting you.

Saving you.

Helping you.

But every time she said them, another piece of the truth appeared.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked exhausted.

Like he was trying to separate the memories of his mother from the reality standing in front of him.

Then Claire spoke again.

“There is something else.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Of course there is.””

Claire looked hurt.

“I’m sorry.””

“What else?””

Claire reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a photograph.

She handed it to Daniel.

It showed a hospital hallway.

A younger Evelyn stood outside a room.

Beside her was another person.

A man.

Daniel stared.

“Who is that?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Your father’s business partner.””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

“Marcus Vale.””

Daniel frowned.

“I know that name.””

“You should,” Thomas said.

“He was the man who took over your father’s company after his death.””

Daniel looked between them.

“But what does this mean?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“It means your mother wasn’t working alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

The wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The cake lying broken on the floor.

Everything around us suddenly felt unreal.

A celebration had turned into an investigation.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Were you working with him?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, you don’t get to stay silent.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

For the first time, she looked like a mother begging her son.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“I have listened to you my entire life.””

His voice echoed.

“I listened when you told me who to trust.””

He looked at me.

“I listened when you told me Emma was lying.””

Then he looked back at Evelyn.

“I listened when you told me my father’s death was just an accident.””

Claire looked down.

Daniel noticed.

“Wait.””

He turned to her.

“Was it?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

The word landed like a stone.

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Your father’s death was never properly investigated.””

Thomas immediately looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“I’m saying the night your father died…”

She paused.

“…someone changed the brakes on his car.””

A woman in the audience gasped.

Rebecca started crying.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“My father was murdered?””

Evelyn suddenly shouted.

“Enough!””

Her voice exploded through the church.

Everyone turned.

She was no longer pretending to be calm.

No longer pretending to be innocent.

“You have no idea what you’re doing!””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then tell me.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Tell me the truth.””

Still nothing.

Then Evelyn looked at me.

And the hatred in her eyes returned.

“You.””

I felt my body tense.

“This is because of you.””

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

“No.””

Evelyn looked shocked.

“You would choose her over your family?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time that day, I saw the man I had fallen in love with.

Not the son controlled by his mother.

The man who could finally see.

Then the church doors opened again.

A police officer entered.

Everyone turned.

He walked directly toward Daniel.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel looked confused.

“Yes?””

The officer held out an envelope.

“I’m sorry to interrupt your wedding.””

He glanced at the destroyed cake.

Then at the crowd.

“But we need you to see this immediately.””

Daniel took the envelope.

“What is it?””

The officer hesitated.

Then he said:

“It’s the official report from your father’s death investigation.””

Daniel opened it.

His eyes moved over the first page.

Then his face went completely white.

Because at the bottom of the report was a signature.

May you like

A signature belonging to the person who had closed the investigation.

Evelyn Carter.
