Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to know how to react.
Because there are some things the human mind refuses to accept.
A broken wedding.
A hidden affair.
A stolen DNA test.
A possible murder.
Those things were shocking.
But this?
This was impossible.
Daniel stood in the middle of the church, still holding his phone, staring at the screen like it had betrayed him.
“My father is dead,” he whispered.
No one answered.
Because everyone knew.
Everyone had attended the funeral.
Everyone had seen the photographs.
Everyone had heard the stories.
William Carter had died eight years ago.
And yet someone had just called Daniel using his father’s voice.
Evelyn was the first person to move.
She walked toward him quickly.
“Give me the phone.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Her expression tightened.
“Daniel, give it to me.””
“Why?””
The question stopped her.
Not because she didn’t have an answer.
Because she had too many.
“Because you don’t know who that was.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You knew someone might contact me.””
“Daniel—”
“You knew.””
His voice grew louder.
“You have been hiding things from me my entire life.””
The guests looked between them.
The woman who had entered the church to expose a supposed betrayal was now standing in the middle of her own secrets.
I looked at Daniel.
He was shaking.
Not from fear.
From trying to understand how everything he believed could be wrong.
The police officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, did the caller identify himself?””
Daniel looked at him.
“He said my name.””
“What else?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He said, ‘I’m sorry I waited so long.’”
Claire covered her mouth.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“No…”
Everyone turned toward her.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“Claire.””
She looked away.
“Claire, what do you know?””
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Your father might not have died that night.””
The church exploded.
“What?””
“You knew?”” Daniel asked.
Claire looked at him with pain in her eyes.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected my father was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
Her voice broke.
“I tried so many times.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked overwhelmed.
“You don’t get to say that. Everyone keeps saying they tried. Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
Claire lowered her eyes.
“You’re right.””
Her honesty surprised him.
“I was afraid.””
“Of my mother?””
Claire nodded.
“And of what would happen if I was wrong.””
Daniel looked at her.
“My entire life was built on a lie.””
Nobody spoke.
I reached for his hand.
This time, he didn’t hesitate.
He held onto mine like he needed something real.
Something that wasn’t a lie.
Then his phone rang again.
The entire church went silent.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Same number.
He answered.
“Who are you?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression changed.
“Where?””
He looked toward the windows.
“What do you mean you’re outside?””
Everyone turned.
The church doors were still closed.
The officer immediately moved toward the entrance.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“No.””
He looked terrified.
Not because he was afraid of meeting his father.
Because he was afraid of what he would find.
The doors slowly opened.
Cold air rushed into the church.
And a man stood outside.
Older.
Thinner.
With gray hair and a tired face.
But there was no mistaking him.
Daniel’s hand fell from the phone.
“Dad?””
The man stared at him.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
That was all he said.
One sentence.
Two words.
But they destroyed whatever was left of the old life Daniel knew.
Daniel didn’t move.
Neither did anyone else.
Then Evelyn screamed.
“No.””
The man looked at her.
And something passed between them.
Something everyone noticed.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.
“You knew.””
Evelyn looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Daniel…”
“You knew he was alive.””
William Carter stepped into the church.
“I told her to stay away from you.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Why?””
William’s eyes moved around the room.
They stopped on the broken wedding cake.
Then on Evelyn.
Then back to Daniel.
“Because I knew she would destroy anyone who threatened her.””
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“That’s a lie.””
William looked at her.
“Is it?””
The room became painfully quiet.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Dad, where have you been?””
William looked down.
“That’s a long story.””
“I have time.””
William looked at the crowd.
“No.””
His eyes moved to the police officer.
“To understand what happened, we need to leave.””
Daniel frowned.
“Leave?””
William nodded.
“Your mother is not the only person who has been watching this family.””
A chill ran through me.
“Who else?””
William looked at me.
And for some reason, that frightened me more than anything else.
“Emma.””
I froze.
“Why are you looking at me?””
William’s expression softened.
“Because you are the reason I came back.””
Daniel immediately stepped between us.
“No.””
His voice was protective.
“She has nothing to do with this.””
William looked at his son.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
Evelyn suddenly laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
Everyone turned.
“You still don’t understand, do you?””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at me.
Then at William.
“You came back too late.””
My heart started racing.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn smiled.
And for the first time, I realized something.
She wasn’t afraid anymore.
She was angry.
“I warned you, William.””
William’s face darkened.
“Evelyn.””
“You thought you could disappear and come back whenever you wanted.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Neither answered.
“Mom?””
Evelyn ignored him.
She looked directly at William.
“You should have stayed dead.””
The words made everyone freeze.
William’s expression changed.
Not shock.
Recognition.
Like he had been expecting those words.
The police officer stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, are you threatening him?””
Evelyn immediately composed herself.
“Of course not.””
But nobody believed her.
Daniel looked at his father.
“Tell me the truth.””
William sighed.
Then he reached inside his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here because I found something.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
William looked at Evelyn.
“The reason your mother tried to ruin your wedding.””
He handed the envelope to Daniel.
Daniel opened it slowly.
Inside was a photograph.
His face changed immediately.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He handed me the picture.
And when I saw it, my blood ran cold.
It was a photograph of me.
Not today.
Not recently.
Years earlier.
I was standing outside a hospital.
Holding a baby blanket.
But I had never seen this picture before.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why do you have this?””
William’s voice was quiet.
“Because your mother has known something about Emma for years.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
William looked at Evelyn.
“And she knew exactly who Emma’s family was.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Emma’s family?””
William nodded.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Your mother didn’t choose Emma as your enemy because of the baby.””
He looked at me.
“She chose Emma because she knew who Emma really was.””
A cold feeling moved through my entire body.
“Who am I?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn smiled.
Not kindly.
Not nervously.
Like she had been waiting years for this moment.
May you like
And she whispered:
“Ask your mother.””
