Chapter 9: The Mother Who Waited
Mark could not speak for almost a minute.
He simply stared at Evelyn.
His mother stood three feet away, older and thinner than the woman he remembered from photographs, but there was no mistaking her.
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me grow up?””
“From a distance.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at Victoria.
“She knows.””
Mark turned.
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“Your father hid me after I threatened to expose him,” Evelyn said.
“He told everyone I had died.””
“You believed him?””
“I had no choice.””
“Then why come back now?””
Evelyn looked at Daisy.
“Because your father’s plan was never about you, Mark.””
Mark frowned.
“Then what was it?””
“It was about your daughter.””
Evelyn walked toward Daisy.
“Your father knew the Hale family fortune was built on theft.””
She looked at Mark.
“He wanted the stolen property returned.””
“But he left the estate to me.””
“Temporarily.””
“To protect Daisy.””
“Yes.””
Evelyn handed him another envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was his father’s.
*My son,*
*I know you will be angry with me. You should be. But I could not trust lawyers, banks, or blood relatives. Only you.*
Mark continued reading.
*Daisy is to inherit everything because she was born outside the family conflict. If the estate is ever transferred before she turns eighteen, the entire trust becomes void and the property must be returned to the rightful heirs of the Ross family.*
Mark looked up.
“Daniel can’t own it.””
“No.””
“He loses everything.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he go this far?””
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“Because he believes your father stole from his family.””
“And did he?””
“Yes.””
Mark closed his eyes.
His father had not been the man he believed.
But neither was Daniel.
“What about Victoria?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“She made terrible choices.””
Victoria nodded.
“I know.””
“But she also saved Daisy.””
Mark turned sharply.
“When?””
“Three months ago,” Evelyn said.
“Daniel wanted Daisy removed from the estate permanently.””
Victoria whispered, “I refused.””
Daniel suddenly entered the chapel.
“You refused too late.””
Everyone turned.
Two men stood behind him.
Daniel held a document.
“The bank approved the transfer.””
Mark stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
He pointed at Evelyn.
“She is the reason all of this happened.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No, Daniel. Your father started it.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“You were supposed to stay buried.””
“And you were supposed to leave Daisy alone.””
Daniel looked at Daisy.
“Give me the estate documents.””
Mark moved in front of her.
“No.””
Daniel raised the document.
“Then you’ll lose everything.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“No, Daniel.””
She pulled a phone from her coat.
“You will.””
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
“The recording of you admitting everything.””
His face changed.
Mark realized what she had done.
Evelyn had been recording him.
Daniel lunged.
Mark stepped in.
The two men grabbed Mark.
Victoria screamed.
Daisy cried out.
Then police sirens exploded outside.
Daniel stopped.
Evelyn looked at Mark.
“I called them before I came.””
Daniel’s expression collapsed.
And as the officers stormed into the chapel, one final truth surfaced.
The trust had a final beneficiary.
Not Daisy.
Not Mark.
Not Daniel.

The document named someone no one expected.
Victoria.
