Chapter 8: The Lawyer’s Last Secret

The greenhouse door opened slowly.

James Carter stood in the rain.

He wasn't carrying an umbrella.

Water streamed from his coat, dripping onto the old stone floor.

Mark instinctively moved in front of Rebecca.

“Don't come any closer.””

James stopped.

His eyes moved from Mark to Rebecca.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then James whispered, “Rebecca.””

She stared at him.

“You should have stayed away.””

James gave a tired smile.

“You know I couldn't.””

“You've had twenty-three years.””

“I spent those years cleaning up Thomas's mistakes.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“You were helping him make them.””

Mark looked between them.

“You know each other.””

James looked at Mark.

“I represented your father.””

“That isn't what she meant.””

“No.””

James sighed.

“Rebecca and I knew each other very well.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Tell him.””

James looked at her.

“Tell him what?””

“That you were the one who altered the trust.””

Mark held up the document.

“Did you forge this?””

James stared at the page.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission was so calm that Mark almost didn't understand it.

“You forged my father's handwriting?””

“No.””

“Then whose?””

James pointed toward Victoria's name.

“I didn't forge your father's handwriting.””

He looked at Mark.

“I added one sentence after his death.””

Mark's jaw tightened.

“You made it look like my father wanted Victoria watched.””

“I wanted you to distrust her.””

“Why?””

“Because she was getting too close.””

“To what?””

James glanced at Rebecca.

“The truth.””

Mark stepped forward.

“What truth?””

James looked at the hidden trust documents.

“Your father did steal from the Ross family.””

Daniel's accusation suddenly sounded small compared with the reality.

“But your father also spent years trying to return what he had taken.””

Mark frowned.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because by the time he changed his mind, too many people had become dependent on his secret.””

“Who?””

James counted silently.

“Bankers. Partners. Politicians.

Lawyers. Security contractors.””

Mark's eyes narrowed.

“And you.””

James nodded.

“Especially me.””

Victoria said, “Tell him why.””

James looked at her.

“I was Thomas's fixer.””

Mark felt sick.

“What does that mean?””

“Whenever your father needed something erased, moved, or buried, I handled it.””

“You took Daniel.””

James didn't answer.

“You took my brother.””

“Yes.””

“You helped fake my mother's death.””

James's voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

Mark stepped toward him.

“And you stood beside me at my father's funeral.””

James lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

Mark looked at Rebecca.

She was crying.

“How could you?””

James looked exhausted.

“Because your father threatened everyone around him.””

“That includes me?””

“Especially you.””

“Why?””

“Because you were the one person he couldn't control.””

Mark laughed bitterly.

“My father controlled my entire life.””

“No.””

James shook his head.

“That was the illusion.””

He pointed toward Daisy.

“He wanted you to become the man who would eventually undo what he had done.””

Mark looked at his daughter.

“Why Daisy?””

“Because she changed him.””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“She made him ashamed.””

Mark looked at her.

“How?””

Rebecca swallowed.

“When Daisy was born, Thomas finally understood what he had done to us.””

“Us?””

“To me. To Daniel. To Ethan. To you.””

She glanced toward the rain.

“He realized Daisy could inherit everything and still be innocent of the original theft.””

Mark remembered the trust.

“The estate goes to her at eighteen.””

“Yes.””

James nodded.

“But there was another condition.””

“What?””

“The estate could only remain protected if you never knew the full truth.””

Mark frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does when you understand what Daniel and Ethan wanted.””

Rebecca answered for him.

“They wanted revenge.””

Mark looked at her.

“Daniel wanted the estate returned.””

“Yes.””

“And Ethan?””

“He wanted something else.””

A slow knock came from the greenhouse door.

Everyone turned.

Three knocks.

James looked toward it.

“Speak of the devil.””

The door opened.

Ethan stood outside.

Behind him was Daniel.

Blood still covered his shirt, but he was standing.

Mark stared.

“You were shot.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“It's a graze.””

Mark rushed toward him.

“You could have died.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Ethan entered behind him.

He looked at James.

“So.””

James sighed.

“This was inevitable.””

Ethan's eyes hardened.

“You should have told Mark years ago.””

“And let you kill each other?””

Daniel stepped between them.

“No one is killing anyone.””

Ethan looked at his brother.

“You still believe that?””

“I do now.””

Mark looked confused.

“What happened to you two?””

Daniel sat on an old wooden crate.

“We both wanted the estate.””

Ethan added, “For different reasons.””

Daniel looked at Mark.

“I wanted the money returned.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I wanted our father's name cleared.””

Mark frowned.

“Your father died believing he was a criminal.””

Ethan nodded.

“Thomas made sure of it.””

James stepped forward.

“He used forged records to make it appear that Robert Ross had embezzled from his own company.””

Mark looked at Daniel.

“Your father wasn't responsible?””

“No.””

“What happened to the real records?””

James pointed toward the steel box.

“Your father hid them.””

Mark opened the second compartment.

Inside was a recording device.

He pressed the only button.

Static crackled.

Then Thomas Hale's voice filled the greenhouse.

“I don't expect forgiveness.””

Mark froze.

His father's voice sounded older than he remembered.

“I expect judgment.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Thomas continued.

“Robert Ross was innocent.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I destroyed his business because I believed I could justify it.””

The recording crackled.

“I told myself I was protecting my family.””

Mark's throat tightened.

“I wasn't.””

Thomas continued.

“I created false accounts, bribed people, and threatened those who knew the truth.””

James looked down.

“I made James do what I was too cowardly to do myself.””

Mark looked at him.

James didn't deny it.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“But there was one thing I could not live with.””

The recording paused.

“When I learned Rebecca had survived, I knew I had to make things right.””

Mark whispered, “Mom.””

Thomas continued.

“I transferred control of the remaining estate into a protected trust.””

Mark stared at the papers.

“Daisy.””

“Yes,” Rebecca whispered.

Thomas's voice continued.

“Daisy must inherit when she reaches eighteen.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“Even after everything?””

Thomas answered himself.

“Especially after everything.””

The recording ended.

Rain hammered the glass roof.

Mark looked at James.

“You knew about this.””

“Yes.””

“And you still tried to keep me from finding it.””

“I believed the trust would collapse if you knew too soon.””

“Why?””

“Because the people tied to the original theft were still active.””

Ethan laughed.

“They're not anymore.””

James looked at him.

“That's where you're wrong.””

Ethan stopped.

James pulled a second file from his coat.

“This is the list.””

Mark took it.

Names filled the pages.

Bank officers.

Private investigators.

Attorneys.

Corporate directors.

And one name circled in red.

Mark stared.

“Who is this?””

James answered:

“Someone you know.””

Mark read the name again.

His stomach turned.

“Victoria.””

Victoria stepped backward.

“What?””

James looked at her.

“Your name isn't on the list because you're an accomplice.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone has been paying you.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Mark looked at her.

“Who?””

James pointed toward the last page.

A payment trail.

Monthly deposits.

All sent to an account belonging to Victoria.

But the final sender wasn't Daniel.

Not Ethan.

Not James.

The account belonged to—

*Rebecca Hale.*

Mark stared.

“Mom?””

Rebecca's face went white.

“I didn't send those.””

James shook his head.

“Neither did I.””

Mark looked at the transaction dates.

The payments had begun six months ago.

Rebecca had only recently returned.

“You said you were hiding.””

“I was.””

“Then who was paying Victoria?””

Rebecca stared at the page.

“I don't know.””

Daniel suddenly stepped closer.

“Wait.””

He pointed at the account number.

“That isn't a bank account.””

Mark frowned.

“What?””

“It's an escrow code.””

Daniel looked at James.

“Where did you get this?””

James's expression changed.

“From the private trust.””

Daniel's face went pale.

“The account is still active.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Meaning what?””

Daniel looked at Mark.

“Meaning someone is controlling the trust right now.””

Mark's phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph.

Daisy.

Standing beside the pool.

Taken that morning.

Mark's blood ran cold.

A second message appeared.

*You found the wrong enemy.*

Then another.

*Come to the estate alone.*

Mark looked up.

“They have Daisy.””

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Mark pulled away.

“I’m going.””

Daniel stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

“You'll need me.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

Mark shook his head.

“Stay with my mother.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Mark, don't go.””

He looked at her.

“I spent my whole life believing I lost you.””

His voice broke.

“I’m not losing Daisy too.””

Victoria grabbed her coat.

“You won't go alone.””

Mark stared at her.

“You lied to me.””

“I did.””

“You manipulated me.””

“Yes.””

“You nearly destroyed my family.””

Victoria nodded.

“I did.””

Mark looked at her.

“Then why should I trust you?””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I know who took Daisy.””

Mark froze.

“Who?””

Victoria swallowed.

“The person who has been controlling the trust.””

“Tell me.””

She looked toward James.

Then Rebecca.

Then Daniel.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your father’s firstborn child.””

Mark stared.

“Ethan?””

Victoria shook her head.

“Not Ethan.””

“Then who?””

Victoria's voice dropped to almost nothing.

“Your sister.””

Mark stopped breathing.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Victoria added:

“She has been alive this whole time.””

Mark's phone buzzed again.

This time there was no photograph.

May you like

Only a single message.

*Bring Victoria. She knows why I was abandoned.*
