Chapter 3: The Promise She Never Told Me About
Mark stared at the photograph on his phone until the screen dimmed.
Then he unlocked it again.
The image did not change.
Victoria stood beside Daniel Ross, much younger but unmistakably the same man from the voice on the phone.
They were standing outside the Hale Estate.
Not in the background.
Not by accident.
Together.
Victoria noticed the look on his face.
“Mark…”
He slowly raised his eyes.
“How long?””
She swallowed.
“Mark, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
That scared her more than anger would have.
“How long have you known Daniel?””
Victoria looked away.
“Since before I met you.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
James stepped back, giving them space but not leaving.
Mark laughed once.
A hollow sound.
“So my wife knew the man who claims to be my brother.””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
Mark shook his head.
“No, you didn’t.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of what would happen if you knew.””
Mark pointed toward the phone.
“Apparently, something was already happening.””
Victoria looked at the picture again.
Her expression changed.
“That photo wasn’t supposed to exist.””
Mark froze.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Daniel wants you angry.””
“He doesn’t have to work very hard.””
Victoria flinched.
Mark immediately regretted the words, but he couldn’t take them back.
For years, Victoria had been the person he came home to.
The person he trusted.
The person he believed protected Daisy when he couldn’t.
Now every memory felt different.
Every conversation had a hidden meaning.
“Tell me the truth,” Mark said.
Victoria sat down slowly.
“Before I met you, I worked with Daniel.””
James crossed his arms.
“Worked with him doing what?””
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“Investigating.””
Mark frowned.
“Investigating what?””
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Mark looked at the old photograph in his hand.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria took a deep breath.
“Because Daniel believed Thomas Hale stole everything from his family.””
Mark looked at James.
“Is that true?””
James hesitated.
That hesitation answered enough.
“You knew too.””
James looked down.
“I knew there were rumors.””
“Rumors?””
“Your father had business disputes years ago.””
Mark shook his head.
“No. Everyone keeps saying that like it explains anything.””
He looked at Victoria.
“You married me because of my father.””
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“At first.””
The honesty hurt.
“But not forever.””
Mark looked away.
“At first?””
Victoria nodded.
“I was supposed to find information.””
“Information about what?””
“The estate.””
“The estate?””
“Daniel believed your father hid money.””
“And did he?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Mark stepped closer.
“Did he?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at him.
“No, I don’t know if your father stole money.””
“Then what did you find?””
Victoria’s voice lowered.
“Daisy.””
Mark stopped.
“What about her?””
“Your father created a trust before he died.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Victoria looked toward the window.
“He created it because he knew someone would come after the estate.””
“Who?””
Daniel’s name hung between them.
Mark shook his head.
“So this is about inheritance.””
“It was.””
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Until Daisy was born.””
Mark frowned.
“Why would Daisy change anything?””
“Because your father changed the trust after meeting her.””
Mark felt a chill.
“My father loved Daisy.””
“Yes.””
“He would have protected her.””
“That’s exactly why Daniel hates her.””
James stepped forward.
“Why would Daniel hate a child?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Daisy is proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Thomas Hale changed.””
Mark stared.
He hated that part of him still wanted to defend his father.
“He wasn’t perfect.””
“No,” Victoria said softly.
“He wasn’t.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But he was trying to fix what he broke.””
Mark studied her.
“And you were helping Daniel destroy him.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
James looked stunned.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked at Mark.
“Because I thought I was exposing a monster.””
“And now?””
She looked toward Daisy’s room upstairs.
“Now I know I helped create another one.””
Mark said nothing.
The silence was broken by a loud crash outside.
Everyone turned.
A window near the office shattered.
Mark immediately moved.
“Daisy!””
He ran upstairs.
His heart pounded as he pushed open her bedroom door.
She was standing beside the bed.
Unharmed.
But something was different.
The window was open.
Rain blew across the floor.
And on her pillow was an envelope.
Mark grabbed it.
“Don’t touch it,” James warned.
But Mark already saw his name written across the front.
*For Mark Hale.*
Inside was a single piece of paper.
No signature.
Only a message.
*Your father didn’t hide Daniel from you. He hid you from Daniel.*
Mark stared.
A second line appeared underneath.
*Ask Victoria what happened the night your brother disappeared.*
He slowly turned.
Victoria stood in the doorway.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“You know something.””
She didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
She looked at Daisy.
Then back at Mark.
“I was there.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“The night Daniel disappeared.””
Mark stepped closer.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Victoria’s hands trembled.
“I saw your father and Daniel arguing.””
“About what?””
“About the estate.””
Mark clenched the paper.
“And?””
Victoria looked terrified.
“And then your father pulled out a gun.””
James immediately stepped forward.
“Victoria.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know what happened after that.””
Mark felt his blood run cold.
“Did he shoot him?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Daniel ran.””
“Where?””
“Into the woods behind the estate.””
“And my father?””
“He followed him.””
Mark looked toward the window.
The rain outside suddenly felt colder.
“What happened after that?””
Victoria whispered:
“Your father came back alone.””
Mark stared.
“And Daniel?””
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“We never found him.””
A phone rang downstairs.
Everyone froze.
The sound echoed through the empty house.
Mark slowly walked toward the hallway.
The caller ID appeared.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then a man’s voice came through.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Mark.””
Mark stopped breathing.
“Who is this?””
The voice trembled.
“I don’t have much time.””
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m Daniel Ross.””
Mark looked back at Victoria.
Her face had lost all color.
“But that’s impossible,” Mark whispered.
Daniel’s voice became urgent.
“Your wife told you I disappeared.””
Mark gripped the phone.
“Yes.””
“She was wrong.””
“How?””
A long silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I didn’t disappear.””
Mark waited.
“I was taken.””
His eyes narrowed.
“By who?””
May you like
Daniel answered with four words.
“By your father’s orders.””
