Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Mark gripped the phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
“Where are you?””
Daniel’s breathing was uneven on the other end.
“Not where you think.””
“Tell me where you are.””
“I can’t.””
“Then tell me who has you.””
“No one.””
Mark stared at the dark window.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Mark, hang up.””
Mark turned toward her.
“You knew he was alive?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel heard her voice.
“Is Victoria there?””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then Daniel said, “Good.””
Victoria looked frightened.
“Why would that be good?””
“Because she needs to hear this too.””
Mark put the phone on speaker.
Daniel continued.
“Twenty-three years ago, Thomas Hale took me away from this family.””
Mark looked at the photograph on the desk.
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“A set of financial records.””
Mark frowned.
“What kind of records?””
“Records proving where the Hale fortune came from.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Your father had been moving money through shell companies. But that wasn’t the worst part.””
Mark’s mouth went dry.
“What was?””
“He was taking money from my father’s company.””
“Your father owned a company?””
“Yes.””
“What happened to it?””
“Thomas destroyed it.””
Mark looked at James.
The attorney’s face was grim.
Daniel spoke again.
“Your father arranged debts, manipulated contracts, and bought controlling interests through people I never knew existed. Within two years, my family was bankrupt.””
Mark whispered, “And then?””
“My father died.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“They said it was a heart attack.””
Mark looked at Victoria.
“But you don’t believe that.””
“I know it wasn’t.””
The rain against the window seemed louder.
Mark asked, “What happened to you?””
“After my father died, I confronted Thomas.””
“And?””
“He offered me money.””
“You refused.””
“I wanted the truth.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That was my mistake.””
Mark waited.
“Your father told me no one would believe me. Then he showed me photographs.””
“What photographs?””
“You.””
Mark froze.
“Me?””
“You were five.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“He told me that if I exposed him, you would be the one who paid for it.””
Mark felt the room tighten around him.
“So you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Because he threatened me?””
“Because I believed him.””
Mark looked at Victoria.
She was crying silently.
“You knew about this.””
Victoria shook her head.
“I knew Daniel had disappeared. I knew your father was involved. I never knew he had threatened you.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Victoria knew enough.””
She looked at the phone.
“I was twenty-four, Daniel.””
“You were old enough to walk away.””
“I tried.””
“You came back.””
“I came back because you said Daisy would never be safe.””
Mark turned sharply.
“Stop.””
Both voices went silent.
Mark took a breath.
“My daughter is safe now.””
Daniel replied quietly.
“For the moment.””
A chill moved through him.
“What does that mean?””
“There are other people looking for the estate.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“People your father owed.””
James stepped closer.
“Mark, ask him about the trust.””
Mark nodded.
“Why did my father leave the estate to Daisy?””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Because he knew I would come back.””
Mark frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you know what the trust actually says.””
“What does it say?””
“The estate is not yours.””
Mark felt anger rise.
“My father left it to me.””
“No.””
“I have the deed.””
“You have the public deed.””
Mark stared.
“What are you saying?””
“There is a private trust.””
Victoria whispered, “Daniel…”
He continued.
“Daisy inherits everything when she turns eighteen.””
Mark’s heart stopped.
“What?””
“And if anyone tries to sell, transfer, mortgage, or otherwise control the estate before then…”
“What happens?””
“It goes back to the Ross family.””
James swore under his breath.
Mark looked at him.
“You knew?””
James shook his head.
“I knew there was a family trust. I didn't know about a Ross reversion clause.””
Daniel said, “Your father kept it hidden.””
“Why would he give the estate to his enemy’s family?””
“Because it was never his.””
Mark said nothing.
Daniel’s next words landed like a hammer.
“The Hale Estate was purchased with money taken from the Ross company.””
Victoria lowered her head.
Mark looked at the walls around him.
The marble.
The portraits.
The staircase.
Every room suddenly felt stolen.
“You’re saying my entire childhood was built on someone else’s money.””
“Yes.””
Mark’s voice cracked.
“Why would my father admit that?””
“Because he regretted it.””
James looked at the desk.
“Then why hide it?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“Because regret doesn’t erase greed.””
Mark swallowed.
“Where are you?””
Again, silence.
Then Daniel said, “I’m close.””
“How close?””
“Closer than you think.””
Mark stepped toward the window.
“Give me a location.””
“You’re not ready.””
“I’ll decide that.””
“You need to find the old greenhouse first.””
Mark froze.
The abandoned greenhouse at the edge of the property.
His father had forbidden him from going near it.
“Why?””
“That’s where he kept the original records.””
“What records?””
“The ones that prove everything.””
Mark looked at James.
James nodded slowly.
“You need those.””
Daniel continued.
“Do not tell anyone you found them.””
Mark glanced at Victoria.
Daniel noticed.
“Especially not her.””
Victoria’s face twisted with hurt.
“You still blame me.””
“I know what you did.””
“I was trying to protect Daisy.””
“By helping my family destroy Mark?””
“I changed my mind.””
“After how long?””
Victoria covered her mouth.
Mark looked between them.
“What exactly did you promise Daniel?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“I promised to get you to sign over control of the estate.””
Mark stared.
“When?””
“After Daisy turned sixteen.””
His blood ran cold.
“Sixteen?””
“Yes.””
“You were planning to wait eight years?””
Victoria nodded.
“I was supposed to build your trust first.””
Mark laughed bitterly.
“So everything was fake.””
“No.””
“It was.””
“I did love you.””
“You married me because of the estate.””
“I fell in love with you afterward.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Don’t let her make this sentimental.””
Victoria looked toward the phone.
“You know nothing about what I sacrificed.””
“I know you signed the papers.””
“What papers?””
Mark turned to her.
She didn't answer.
“Victoria.””
She looked at him.
“The transfer authorization.””
“What transfer authorization?””
“The document Daniel gave me.””
“Where is it?””
“I destroyed it.””
Mark took a step closer.
“Did you?””
Victoria’s eyes moved toward the desk drawer.
Mark followed her gaze.
He opened it.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
He pulled it out.
Victoria whispered, “Mark, don't.””
He opened it.
The first page was a transfer authorization.
His name.
Victoria’s signature.
Daniel’s signature.
And a date.
Three months earlier.
Mark’s hands shook.
“You signed this.””
“I didn’t submit it.””
“But you signed it.””
“Yes.””
James took the document.
“Mark, this is dangerous.””
Mark stared at Victoria.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to destroy it before Daniel could use it.””
“Then why keep it?””
“I thought I could prove coercion.””
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“You're wasting time.””
Mark brought the phone closer.
“What do you want from me?””
“I want the truth.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.
“I want my family’s name restored.””
Mark frowned.
“And if I refuse?””
“Then someone else will come for Daisy.””
Mark felt his body go cold.
“Who?””
Daniel answered:
“Your father’s lawyer.””
James stiffened.
Mark slowly turned toward him.
“James?””
The attorney’s face had changed.
“Daniel is lying.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Ask him where he was the night Thomas Hale disappeared.””
Mark’s heart began pounding.
“What?””
James stepped backward.
“I told you, Daniel.””
Mark looked at his attorney.
“You knew my father.””
“I represented him.””
“That’s not what he meant.””
James glanced at the door.
Mark saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Where were you that night?””
James said nothing.
“Answer me.””
“I was at the estate.””
Mark’s voice dropped.
“With my father?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
James looked toward Victoria.
Then at Mark.
“No.””
Daniel interrupted.
“He’s lying.””
James shouted toward the phone.
“You don't know what happened!””
“I know exactly what happened.””
Mark stood between them, trying to understand a lifetime of lies in a single morning.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
A fourth knock.
Mark walked toward the entrance.
James grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever is outside knows you're looking.””
Mark pulled away.
He opened the door.
No one stood on the porch.
Only a small cardboard box sat on the wet stone.
Mark crouched and opened it.
Inside was a cassette tape.
An old key.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed his father standing outside the greenhouse.
Beside him was a young Daniel.
But Mark’s eyes went immediately to the third person in the picture.
His mother.
Alive.
And on the back of the photograph, someone had written:
*She knows what happened to Daniel.*
Mark slowly looked up at Victoria.
She was staring at the photograph.
Her lips parted.
“Oh God.””
Mark held it up.
“What?””
Victoria’s voice trembled.
“That picture was taken two days before your mother died.””
Mark stared at her.
“My mother died when I was five.””
Victoria shook her head.
“That’s what you were told.””
Mark’s phone suddenly rang again.
Daniel.
Mark answered.
Daniel said only one sentence.
“Now you know why your father was afraid of the truth.””
May you like
The line went dead.
And from somewhere inside the house came the unmistakable sound of a door unlocking.
