Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Never Buried
Mark stood in the library with the hospital bracelet clenched in his fist.
Rebecca Hale.
His mother.
A woman who had supposedly died when he was five.
A woman whose photograph had appeared in a hidden room beneath the estate.
A woman whose hospital bracelet had somehow been left behind by someone who had entered the library minutes earlier.
Behind him, Daisy began to cry.
“Daddy, is Grandma really alive?””
Mark turned.
He looked at his daughter, then at Victoria, then at Daniel.
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was standing right in front of them, and somehow it was still impossible.
Daniel broke the silence.
“Yes.””
Mark’s head snapped toward him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You called me and told me she was alive.””
“I told you your mother knew what happened to me.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“No. It isn’t.””
Mark held up the bracelet.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't know where she is now.””
Mark stared at her.
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Victoria's voice was barely audible.
“Five years.””
The anger hit Mark so quickly that his entire body went rigid.
“You knew for five years?””
“I was trying to find her.””
“You knew my mother was alive for five years and never told me?””
Victoria looked at Daisy.
“Daniel told me your father had people watching her.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
“I was afraid.””
“You were always afraid.””
Mark threw the bracelet onto the desk.
“Every secret in this house seems to have the same excuse.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“She was being watched.””
“By whom?””
“The same people who took me.””
Mark looked toward the hidden panel.
“Then that man knew about her.””
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I don't know.””
Mark laughed bitterly.
“You keep telling me what you don't know.””
“Because I'm not the one who has been living inside this house.””
Mark stopped.
Daniel pointed toward the walls.
“Your father built a maze of secrets beneath this property. Hidden rooms. Private tunnels.
False records. Dead accounts. You think I know everything because I survived him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I survived because I learned when not to look.””
Mark glanced toward Daisy.
“She can't stay here.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“She shouldn't.””
Mark looked at her.
“You agree?””
“Yes.””
That surprised him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever took that key knows about the estate.””
Daniel nodded.
“And now they know you found the basement.””
Mark picked up his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Daniel caught his arm.
“Not yet.””
Mark pulled free.
“Why?””
“Because the police may be part of the problem.””
James, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.
“That is a serious accusation.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your father used private security. Then he used lawyers. Then he used law enforcement contacts.””
James stiffened.
“You don't know what you're talking about.””
“I know enough.””
Mark turned toward James.
“Did my father have police on his payroll?””
James's jaw tightened.
“Not directly.””
“Not directly?””
“He made donations.””
“To whom?””
James looked away.
Mark stepped closer.
“James.””
“I don't know.””
Daniel laughed.
“You know.””
James finally snapped.
“I know your family operated in ways that crossed lines.””
Mark stared at him.
“How far?””
James rubbed his face.
“Far enough.””
Before Mark could say anything else, the lights went out.
Daisy screamed.
Mark moved immediately.
“Stay with me!””
He pulled Daisy close.
Victoria grabbed a flashlight from the side table.
“Where's Daniel?””
No answer.
“Daniel?””
Something crashed downstairs.
Then a door slammed.
Mark reached for the flashlight.
“Everyone stay here.””
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Mark pulled away.
“I need to know who is in this house.””
“You have Daisy.””
That stopped him.
For a second, he listened.
Rain.
Wind.
The low hum of the emergency generator.
Then footsteps.
Coming up the stairs.
Mark stepped in front of Daisy.
The library door opened.
A police officer stood there.
Mark recognized him.
Officer Harris.
The same officer who had responded to the pool incident.
Harris held his weapon low.
“Mr. Hale.””
Mark's shoulders relaxed slightly.
“What are you doing here?””
“We received a distress call.””
“From who?””
Harris looked into the room.
“Your security system.””
Mark frowned.
“I didn't trigger it.””
Harris stepped inside.
“Someone did.””
Daniel reappeared from the hallway.
“Harris.””
The officer looked at him.
His face changed.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You remember me.””
Harris raised his weapon.
“Stay where you are.””
Mark stepped between them.
“Why are you pointing a gun at him?””
“You don't know who he is.””
“He says he's Daniel Ross.””
Harris's expression remained cold.
“Daniel Ross is dead.””
Mark stared.
“What?””
“Officially, Daniel Ross died twenty-two years ago.””
Daniel laughed.
“You still believe the file.””
Harris aimed at him.
“Hands where I can see them.””
Mark looked at Daniel.
Then at Harris.
“Something is wrong.””
Victoria whispered, “Mark…”
Harris spoke.
“Mr. Hale, I need everyone in this room to stay calm.””
“Why?””
“Because someone inside this estate has been committing financial fraud.””
Mark frowned.
“Who?””
Harris looked directly at him.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Mark stared.
“What?””
“You are the authorized holder of the family trust.””
“Yes.””
“Eight million dollars were transferred from that trust last month.””
“I didn't transfer anything.””
“We have your signature.””
“It was forged.””
“We have security footage.””
“Then show it to me.””
Harris paused.
Mark caught it.
That hesitation.
“You don't have footage.””
Harris didn't answer.
Mark felt something cold settle in his stomach.
“You don't have anything.””
Harris's hand moved toward his radio.
Daniel suddenly lunged.
Mark flinched.
Harris fired.
The shot exploded through the library.
Daisy screamed.
Victoria dropped to the floor.
Daniel staggered backward, clutching his shoulder.
Mark stared in disbelief.
“You shot him!””
Harris moved forward.
Daniel collapsed beside the bookshelves.
Mark dropped to his knees.
“Daniel!””
Blood soaked through Daniel's shirt.
“Call an ambulance!””
Harris didn't move.
Mark looked up.
“You heard me!””
Harris raised his gun again.
“Stay where you are.””
Victoria screamed.
“You're going to kill him!””
Harris's eyes remained fixed on Daniel.
Daniel reached weakly toward Mark.
“Basement…”
Mark leaned closer.
“What?””
“The wall…”
Daniel coughed.
“Second panel…”
His eyes closed.
Mark spun around.
He knew which wall.
The hidden library panel.
The same one the stranger had escaped through.
Mark ran to it.
Harris shouted, “Stop!””
Mark shoved the bookshelf aside.
Behind it was a narrow opening.
A tunnel.
He looked back.
Victoria was holding Daisy.
James was crouched behind a chair.
Harris's weapon was still pointed toward them.
Mark stepped into the tunnel.
Harris shouted again.
“Mr. Hale!””
Mark kept going.
The tunnel was dark and narrow.
He ran blindly.
Behind him came footsteps.
He reached a metal door.
The old brass key fit perfectly.
The lock turned.
Mark pushed it open.
Inside was a small room.
A bed.
A table.
A lamp.
And dozens of medical records.
He scanned the papers.
Every page carried the same name.
*Rebecca Hale.*
Then he saw the latest record.
Three days earlier.
Mark froze.
Three days.
She had been here.
Someone had been treating her.
He picked up the phone on the table.
A single number was taped beside it.
Mark dialed.
The line rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
An elderly woman's voice whispered:
“Who is this?””
Mark couldn't speak.
He swallowed.
“My name is Mark.””
Silence.
Then the woman's breathing changed.
“Mark?””
His knees nearly gave way.
“Mom?””
The voice began to cry.
“My baby.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
“I can't tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because they're listening.””
Mark looked around the room.
“Who?””
Rebecca's voice trembled.
“Your father wasn't working alone.””
Mark's heart pounded.
“Who was with him?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“James.””
Mark froze.
His attorney.
The man standing upstairs.
The man who had claimed he knew nothing.
“James Carter?””
“Yes.””
Mark stared at the door.
“Mom, James is here.””
Rebecca gasped.
“Then you have to leave.””
“Why?””
“He knows where the second key is.””
Mark looked at the brass key in his hand.
“What second key?””
Rebecca's voice dropped.
“The one your father hid inside you.””
Mark frowned.
“What does that mean?””
But before she could answer, a man's voice came through the line.
Calm.
Close.
Terrifying.
“Your mother has said enough.””
Mark spun around.
There was no one in the room.
Then he heard the lock turning from the other side of the door.
“Who are you?””
The voice answered:
“Your brother.””
Mark's blood ran cold.
“Daniel?””
“No.””
The voice laughed softly.
“I’m Ethan Ross.””
Mark stared at the door.
“Who is Ethan Ross?””
The man answered:
May you like
“Your father's other son.””
And then the lights came on.
