Chapter 2: The Evidence Behind the Silence

The first thing Mark heard when he woke up was the sound of rain tapping against the bedroom window.

For a few seconds, everything felt normal.

Then he saw the empty space beside him.

Victoria’s side of the bed was untouched.

The memory returned like a wave crashing through glass.

Daisy falling.

The splash.

Her terrified voice.

“She pushed me, Daddy.””

Mark sat up immediately.

He looked at the clock.

6:14 a.m.

He had barely slept.

After the police left the previous night, they had allowed Victoria to stay in a guest room at the estate while they reviewed the initial report. Mark had wanted her gone, but his attorney advised him not to make any decisions until the investigation was complete.

The worst part was not knowing.

The cameras had captured the moment.

But Mark still felt like he was missing something.

Something bigger.

He walked into Daisy’s room quietly.

She was awake, sitting against the headboard with her stuffed rabbit in her arms.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Daisy looked up.

“Is she still here?””

Mark sat beside her.

“Yes.””

Her fingers tightened around the rabbit.

“Why?””

Mark didn’t have an easy answer.

Because Victoria was his wife.

Because she was the woman he trusted with his daughter.

Because admitting what she had done meant admitting he had ignored signs for years.

“She won’t come near you,” Mark said.

Daisy looked down.

“She always says I don’t belong here.””

Mark’s chest tightened.

“When did she say that?””

Daisy shrugged.

“A lot.””

“A lot?””

The little girl nodded.

“Sometimes when you’re not home.””

Mark went still.

“What else does she say?””

Daisy hesitated.

“She says this house was supposed to be hers.””

A cold feeling settled over him.

“Daisy, why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you looked happy.””

The answer hurt more than any accusation.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at him.

“You smiled more after you married her.””

Mark swallowed.

“And you thought telling me would take that away?””

Daisy nodded.

“I didn’t want you to be lonely again.””

Mark pulled her into his arms.

“Oh, Daisy.””

She buried her face against him.

“I’m sorry.””

“You don’t apologize for being scared.””

A knock came from the doorway.

Mark looked up.

It was his attorney, James Carter.

James had worked with Mark’s family for nearly fifteen years. He was one of the few people Mark trusted completely.

“Mark,” James said quietly.

“We need to talk.””

Mark stood.

“About Victoria?””

James nodded.

“About Victoria. And about your father.””

That caught his attention.

“My father?””

James stepped inside and closed the door.

“I reviewed the preliminary evidence from the police.””

“And?””

“The footage is damaging.””

Mark let out a breath.

“Then why do you sound worried?””

James looked toward Daisy.

“Because this may not be only about what happened at the pool.””

Mark felt his stomach tighten.

“What are you saying?””

James lowered his voice.

“Victoria has been asking questions about the estate.””

“She lives here.””

“That’s not unusual.””

“What questions?””

James opened a folder.

Inside were copies of financial requests.

“Three months ago, she attempted to access old property records.””

Mark frowned.

“Why?””

“She claimed she was organizing family documents.””

“That sounds harmless.””

James shook his head.

“Not when she specifically requested files from the years before you were born.””

Mark stared.

“Before I was born?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she care about that?””

James didn’t answer immediately.

That silence bothered Mark more than the words would have.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

James looked at him.

“Your father had secrets.””

Mark laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“My father was a businessman. He kept private records.””

“No, Mark.””

James placed another document on the table.

“Your father kept hidden records.””

Mark picked it up.

It was an old payment receipt.

The name at the bottom made him freeze.

*Daniel Ross.*

“Who is this?””

James watched his reaction carefully.

“You’ve never heard that name?””

“No.””

“That’s strange.””

“Why?””

“Because your father paid him every month for eleven years.””

Mark looked up.

“Who is Daniel Ross?””

James sighed.

“That’s what I was hoping you could tell me.””

Before Mark could answer, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the message preview.

*You need to see what your wife has been hiding.*

Mark answered.

“Who is this?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice.

“Mark Hale?””

“Yes.””

“You don’t know me.””

“Then why are you calling?””

“Because your wife isn’t the only person who has been lying to you.””

Mark stood.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Daniel Ross.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

Mark glanced at James.

The attorney’s expression changed.

“You know my name,” Daniel continued.

“You know my father.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“I’m the reason your father built that estate.””

Mark gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re living inside a story that was never yours.””

The call ended.

Mark stared at the screen.

James slowly sat down.

“You need to tell me everything you know about that man.””

“I don’t know anything.””

James looked troubled.

“That’s the problem.””

For the next hour, Mark searched every file in his father’s old office.

Most were ordinary.

Business contracts.

Tax records.

Property documents.

Then he found a locked drawer.

He had never opened it before.

Not because he couldn’t.

Because his father had told him never to touch it.

The memory came back clearly.

Mark was sixteen.

He had asked about the drawer.

His father had looked at him with an expression Mark had never forgotten.

Fear.

“Some things,” his father had said, “only bring pain when they are uncovered.””

Mark had always thought it was about business.

Now he wasn’t sure.

He forced the drawer open.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

A small black notebook.

And one picture that made his hands shake.

His father stood beside a young woman.

She looked familiar.

Very familiar.

Mark picked it up.

“Who are you?””

Behind the photograph was handwriting.

His father’s handwriting.

*Rebecca and the children.*

Children.

Plural.

Mark turned the picture over.

There were two children standing beside his father.

One was him.

The other was a boy he had never seen.

James walked closer.

“Mark?””

Mark couldn’t answer.

The boy had the same eyes as his father.

The same sharp jaw.

The same expression.

A note slipped from the photograph.

Mark opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

*If Daniel comes back, protect Daisy.*

His heart stopped.

“Daisy?””

James looked over his shoulder.

“Why would your father mention Daisy?””

Mark shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Both men turned.

Victoria stood there.

She had been listening.

“How much did you find?””

Mark stared at her.

“You know Daniel.””

Victoria said nothing.

“That’s why you wanted those records.””

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Mark, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the photograph in his hand.

And all the color drained from her face.

“You found that.””

“Who is he?””

Victoria whispered:

“Your brother.””

Mark felt like the room moved beneath him.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“He was the reason I married you.””

Mark stared at her.

“What?””

“Because your father made sure Daniel disappeared.””

James looked between them.

“Victoria, what are you saying?””

She looked at Mark.

“I’m saying your family has been hiding the truth from you since the day you were born.””

Mark’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Who is Daniel Ross?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, tears were there.

“He is the son your father erased.””

The silence afterward felt heavier than any scream.

Then Mark’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Daniel.

One picture.

Victoria standing beside Daniel years earlier.

May you like

And underneath it:

*Ask your wife why she promised to destroy you.*
