Chapter 9: The Trap They Built for an Innocent Man

“She's smiling because she thinks she's won.””

Thomas's voice broke the silence.

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas pointed toward her.

“You've been caught discussing fraud, attempted theft, and a staged accusation. Yet you still believe you can walk away from this.””

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

“I want a lawyer.””

Marcus stepped aside.

“Fine. Call one.””

She looked surprised.

“You're not going to stop me?””

“No.””

“You're my husband!””

Marcus stared at her.

“You stopped being my wife when you decided my father was an acceptable sacrifice.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Evelyn rushed toward her.

“Don't leave. We need to talk.””

Vanessa pulled away.

“You've done enough.””

Evelyn looked stunned.

“Excuse me?””

“You promised me the money. You promised me everything would be handled.””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“And you promised you could control Marcus.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“I can't control him when you keep making mistakes!””

Marcus watched them argue.

The two women who had worked together to destroy his father were now desperately trying to save themselves.

He turned to Robert.

“Dad, we're going to Daniel's office.””

Robert nodded.

Thomas picked up his folder.

“I'm coming too.””

Before they left, Marcus looked back at Vanessa.

“One question.””

She stared at him.

“Did you ever love me?””

For a moment, something crossed her face.

Perhaps guilt.

Perhaps regret.

Then she answered.

“I did. But love doesn't mean I have to spend my life settling for less.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Then I hope whatever you get from this is worth it.””

He walked out.

At Daniel's office, the attorney had already prepared several documents.

He stood when the three men entered.

“Robert, I'm glad you're here.””

Robert shook his hand.

“What has happened?””

Daniel placed a copy of the police complaint on the desk.

“Vanessa has submitted a formal statement alleging that you attempted to assault her in the bedroom.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Of course she has.””

“She has also provided photographs showing her torn blouse and bruising.””

Marcus sat down.

“Those photographs were staged.””

Daniel nodded.

“Possibly. But we need evidence.””

Thomas placed his folder on the desk.

“We have recordings, emails, financial records, and documents showing they planned to make Robert appear mentally incompetent.””

Daniel examined the contents.

His expression became increasingly serious.

“This is substantial.””

Marcus opened his phone.

“There's another issue. The security camera was disconnected twenty-eight minutes before the accusation.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who had access?””

“The camera system is controlled through my account. But Mom and Vanessa both knew the password.””

Daniel made a note.

“Can the company retrieve the connection logs?””

Marcus nodded.

“I'll contact them.””

Robert sat quietly.

Then he spoke.

“Daniel, I don't want revenge.””

The attorney looked at him.

“What do you want?””

“I want my name back. I want my son to know I never touched that woman. And I want the truth about what happened to my brother.””

Thomas placed a hand on his shoulder.

“You'll get it.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then we'll proceed carefully.””

He opened another folder.

“I also reviewed the medical assessment from Dr. Reed. There are serious inconsistencies.””

“What kind?”” Marcus asked.

“Several examination dates listed in the report do not match the doctor's appointment records. One assessment supposedly took place on a Sunday when the clinic was closed.””

Robert frowned.

“I wasn't even at his clinic that weekend.””

Daniel pointed to another page.

“More importantly, the report includes observations from a neurological examination that was never conducted.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Can we prove it?””

Daniel nodded.

“I'm arranging an independent medical evaluation. We also need to obtain the original clinic records and speak with Dr. Reed.””

Marcus looked at the attorney.

“Can we force him to explain?””

“If there is evidence of fraudulent medical documentation, the authorities can investigate.””

At that moment, Daniel's assistant knocked.

“There's someone here asking to speak with Mr. Williams.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who?””

“A woman named Patricia Cole.””

Robert stood immediately.

“Patricia?””

The assistant nodded.

“She says she has evidence concerning the bedroom incident.””

Daniel exchanged a glance with Marcus.

“Bring her in.””

A few moments later, a nervous woman in her fifties entered the office.

She carried a canvas bag and held it tightly against her chest.

“Mr. Williams,” she whispered.

Robert stood.

“Patricia. Where have you been?””

She began crying.

“I'm sorry. I should have told you everything sooner.””

Marcus offered her a chair.

“Please sit down.””

Patricia placed her bag on the table.

“I worked for your parents for nearly six years. I saw things I should never have ignored.””

Daniel spoke gently.

“Take your time.””

Patricia opened the bag and removed a small digital recorder.

“I recorded a conversation between Mrs. Williams and Vanessa three days before the incident.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why?””

“Because I heard them talking about Mr. Williams. I knew something terrible was coming.””

She pressed a button.

Evelyn's voice filled the office.

“Robert won't sign the transfer papers voluntarily.””

Vanessa answered.

“Then we'll make him look incapable of making decisions.””

Evelyn replied.

“And if Marcus gets suspicious?””

Vanessa laughed.

“He'll believe whatever I tell him. He's too afraid of losing his marriage.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made everyone freeze.

Vanessa said, “The bedroom scene will be enough. Once I scream, nobody will ask what happened before.””

Patricia stopped the recording.

Robert's face had gone pale.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Do you have the original recording?””

Patricia nodded.

“This is the original device. I never edited it.””

“Will you testify about where and when you recorded it?””

“Yes.””

Daniel carefully placed the recorder in an evidence bag.

“Thank you. This may be very important.””

Patricia wiped her eyes.

“There's something else.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into her bag again and removed a folded photograph.

It showed Dr. Reed standing outside the Williams family home.

Beside him was Richard Coleman, the former company accountant.

The photograph was dated two months earlier.

Thomas stared at it.

“Richard.””

Patricia nodded.

“I saw him several times. He came to the house after Mrs. Williams told everyone he had moved away years ago.””

Thomas looked furious.

“He was supposed to have left the country.””

Patricia continued.

“Dr. Reed and Mr. Coleman met in the study.

Sometimes Vanessa joined them. They always asked me to leave the room.””

Marcus examined the photograph.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

Patricia looked ashamed.

“Mrs. Williams threatened to accuse me of stealing jewelry if I spoke. I needed the job. I was supporting my grandchildren.””

Robert reached across the table.

“Patricia, you should never have been put in that position.””

She began crying harder.

Then she handed Daniel a final document.

It was a handwritten note.

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel placed it on the desk.

The note contained a series of instructions for Dr. Reed.

One sentence had been underlined twice.

*Do not mention the previous incident involving Robert's brother.*

Thomas stood abruptly.

“What previous incident?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Patricia, did you hear anything about Richard Coleman and the night Thomas disappeared?””

She nodded slowly.

“I heard Mrs. Williams talking to Dr. Reed about it.””

Thomas moved closer.

“What did she say?””

Patricia hesitated.

“She said the same thing happened before. She said Robert's brother had discovered the financial fraud, and Richard had arranged for him to be taken somewhere until the company documents were signed.””

Thomas's face turned white.

“Taken somewhere?””

Patricia nodded.

“I don't know where. But I heard Dr. Reed say something about a private clinic.””

Robert looked horrified.

“Thomas, what does this mean?””

Thomas slowly sat down.

“I spent twenty-six years believing Richard had ruined my life.””

He looked at the photograph.

“But perhaps he didn't just steal the money.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas's voice trembled.

“I think Richard may have been responsible for my disappearance.””

Daniel immediately picked up the phone.

“We need to contact the authorities.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Wait.””

He looked at Patricia.

“Did you hear where Richard went afterward?””

She nodded.

“He mentioned a clinic outside the city. A place where patients could stay without their families visiting.””

Thomas stared at her.

“Do you remember the name?””

Patricia reached into her bag and pulled out a small notebook.

“I wrote it down.””

She opened it to a page near the back.

At the top was an address.

Below it was the name of a medical facility.

*Greenwood Private Care Center.*

Marcus recognized the name.

It was the same facility where Dr. Reed had worked before opening his private practice.

Daniel immediately began searching through the documents on his desk.

Then he stopped.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

Daniel turned his laptop around.

A public patient admission record showed a man admitted to Greenwood twenty-six years earlier under a temporary identity.

The photograph was old and grainy.

But the facial features were unmistakable.

Thomas leaned toward the screen.

His lips parted.

“That isn't possible.””

Robert looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas pointed at the photograph.

“That man…”

He swallowed.

“That's Richard Coleman.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

The former accountant hadn't disappeared.

He had been hiding in plain sight.

And according to the admission record, Richard had checked into Greenwood under another man's name just two days after Thomas vanished.

Daniel picked up his phone.

“I know someone who can verify whether he's still connected to that facility.””

Before he could make the call, Marcus's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Marcus Williams?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Richard Coleman.””

Thomas stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

Marcus looked at his uncle.

Richard continued speaking.

“I understand you've been asking questions about me.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Where are you?””

The man laughed softly.

“Somewhere your father should have visited twenty-six years ago.””

Then his voice became cold.

“Tell Thomas that if he wants to know what really happened that night, he needs to come alone.””

The call ended.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Thomas looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Marcus swallowed.

“He wants to meet you.””

Thomas stared at the screen.

Then he whispered:

“I think I finally know why he let me live.””
