Chapter 6: The Doctor's Dangerous Secret
Robert stared at the medical report on Marcus's laptop.
His name appeared at the top.
His date of birth was correct.
His medical history was detailed, including medications, blood pressure readings, and the results of his last examination.
But the conclusion was completely unfamiliar.
*Patient demonstrates significant memory impairment and may be unable to make independent financial decisions.*
Robert shook his head.
“I've never had that examination.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
“Absolutely. I went to Dr. Reed for a routine checkup three months ago. He asked about my sleep, checked my blood pressure, and told me everything looked normal.””
Daniel's voice came through the phone.
“Marcus, I need you to send me a copy of that recording and the report.””
“I will.””
“And don't allow your father to attend another appointment with Dr. Reed until we've verified the medical records.””
Robert looked devastated.
“He knows everything about my health.””
“I understand,” Daniel replied.
“But right now, we need to protect your father.””
Marcus ended the call.
He sat beside Robert.
“Dad, we're going to get an independent medical examination.””
Robert nodded slowly.
Then he looked toward the staircase.
“Where's your mother?””
“Upstairs.””
“Is Vanessa with her?””
“Yes.””
Robert rubbed his hands together.
“I need to ask Evelyn something.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Not alone.””
“She's my wife, son.””
“And she helped plan this.””
Robert looked away.
“I know.””
The words came out quietly.
For the first time, Marcus realized his father wasn't simply frightened.
He was grieving.
He was grieving the woman he had married, the family he thought he had built, and the peaceful retirement he had imagined.
Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Let me handle it.””
They went upstairs together.
Evelyn was sitting on the bed, scrolling through her phone. Vanessa stood near the closet, packing clothes into a suitcase.
Both women looked up when the men entered.
Vanessa immediately stopped.
“Marcus, where have you been?””
He pointed toward the laptop.
“Listening.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Listening to what?””
“The recording Patricia left.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely frightened.
Vanessa dropped a blouse into the suitcase.
“What recording?””
Marcus opened the audio file.
He pressed play.
Evelyn's own voice filled the bedroom.
“Once Robert signs, everything will be much easier.””
Then Vanessa's voice.
“What if he refuses?””
The recording continued.
By the time the man mentioned the medical report, Evelyn had gone pale.
“Turn that off!”” she snapped.
Marcus paused it.
“Why? You don't want to hear your own words?””
Evelyn stood.
“That's been edited!””
“Then explain it.””
“Someone has manipulated the recording!””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Do you recognize the voices?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I don't know anything about it.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You're in the recording.””
“No, I'm not.””
He replayed the portion where she spoke.
Her own voice came through the speakers.
“What if he refuses?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
She sat down on the edge of the bed.
Evelyn turned toward her.
“Don't say anything.””
Marcus noticed.
“Mom, are you threatening her?””
Evelyn glared at him.
“I'm trying to stop you from making a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Destroying your family over a recording you don't understand.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Evelyn, look at me.””
She didn't move.
“Did you arrange for Dr. Reed to write that report?””
Evelyn's lips tightened.
“Robert, you need to calm down.””
“Did you?””
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
Robert stared at her.
“Necessary?””
“You've been getting older. You don't understand how much responsibility this house requires.””
“I paid every mortgage payment myself!””
“And I took care of you!””
Robert's voice broke.
“Then why are you trying to take everything from me?””
Evelyn looked at him.
For a moment, her expression softened.
Then she said something that destroyed whatever remained of his hope.
“Because you were never going to leave anything to me willingly.””
Robert stepped backward.
Marcus caught his father's arm.
“Dad…”
Evelyn continued.
“You always controlled the money. You decided what we bought, where we lived, and how much we spent. Even after retirement, you treated me like I needed your permission to do anything.””
Robert stared at her.
“I thought we were partners.””
“You thought you were generous because you let me use your credit card!””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked up.
Evelyn seemed to realize she had revealed too much.
Marcus asked quietly, “How much money did you need?””
Evelyn refused to answer.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“Your father had hundreds of thousands sitting in accounts. Money that could have changed all our lives.””
“Whose lives?””
“Yours! Mine! Vanessa's!””
Robert shook his head.
“You had your own savings. I never stopped you from working.””
Evelyn laughed.
“Your savings? I wanted something bigger.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Was this about the apartment?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I wanted a new life.””
“With Daniel Carter?””
She looked away.
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“Daniel Carter isn't the real problem.””
Marcus turned.
“Then what is?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she looked directly at Robert.
“Your father has been hiding money from all of us.””
Robert frowned.
“What?””
“Don't pretend you don't know.””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Evelyn moved toward the dresser and pulled out a brown folder.
She threw it onto the bed.
“Then explain this.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside were bank statements from an account he had never seen before.
The account was registered under Robert's name, but the balance was much larger than his known retirement savings.
<escape>$1,250,000.</escape>
Marcus stared.
“Dad?””
Robert looked genuinely confused.
“Where did this come from?””
Evelyn laughed.
“Exactly. That's what I've been asking.””
Marcus examined the statements.
The account had received regular deposits over several years.
But the money wasn't from Robert's pension or his construction work.
It came from a company called Williams Development Holdings.
Marcus frowned.
“Dad, what is this company?””
Robert slowly sat down.
“I haven't heard that name in years.””
“What does it mean?””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Before I retired, I invested in a small development project with a business partner. We sold our shares years ago.””
Marcus looked at the statements.
“Then why is money still coming into this account?””
Robert shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Evelyn folded her arms.
“Because he never told us the truth.””
Robert looked up sharply.
“I told you everything I knew!””
Marcus turned another page.
A recent deposit had been made just eleven days earlier.
The amount was $200,000.
The sender was listed as Williams Development Holdings.
But the authorization signature wasn't Robert's.
It belonged to someone named Thomas Williams.
Marcus frowned.
“Who is Thomas Williams?””
Robert's expression changed.
His face became almost gray.
“Where did you get that name?””
“It's on the bank statement.””
Robert slowly stood.
“Thomas was my younger brother.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You have a brother?””
Robert nodded.
“Had.””
“What happened to him?””
Robert stared at the paperwork.
“He disappeared twenty-six years ago.””
Evelyn's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
Robert noticed.
“Evelyn?””
She stepped backward.
“Robert, don't.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Mom, what do you know about Thomas?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Nothing.””
Robert picked up the bank statement.
“Thomas was involved in the original development company. He vanished after a dispute over the money. The police searched for him, but nobody ever found him.””
Marcus stared at the recent deposit.
“Then why is his company sending money to your account?””
Robert couldn't answer.
Suddenly, Vanessa's phone began ringing.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went white.
Marcus noticed the caller ID.
*THOMAS WILLIAMS.*
Nobody moved.
The phone rang again.
And again.
Vanessa slowly backed toward the closet.
Robert stared at the screen as if he were looking at a ghost.
“Answer it,” he whispered.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I'm not answering.””
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Why is my father's missing brother calling you?””
Vanessa clutched the phone against her chest.
“It's not what you think.””
Robert's voice trembled.
“Vanessa, answer the phone.””
She looked at Evelyn.
Her mother-in-law was silently shaking her head.
Then the call ended.
A message appeared.
Vanessa glanced at it.
Marcus saw the words before she could hide the screen.
*You promised me Robert would never discover the account. If he has, tell Evelyn the original agreement is still in my possession.*
Robert grabbed the edge of the dresser.
“What agreement?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Evelyn began crying.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Mom, what original agreement?””
Evelyn covered her face.
Then, from downstairs, the front doorbell rang.
Three sharp chimes.
Marcus walked toward the staircase.
A man's voice called from the entrance.
“I'm Thomas Williams. I'm here to see my brother.””
Robert stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the man standing outside wasn't supposed to be alive.
And he was holding a document that could expose the biggest secret of the Williams family.
